Ireland were never going to do it.

Well, my heart didn't know that!

Anyway, France defended well but need to improve around rucks offensively and defensively. Too much penalties and time wasted during that phase of play.

Just realized, the margin was Burn's ballooned kick in the first quarter. He missed by ten metres.

I really feel for Cooney the most. In his prime, has performed excellently for the last few years and was the best 9 in the country even before the last World Cup, Schmidt seemed to ear mark him as the future before he left but now he is left in the wilderness. I'd really love the likes of BOD to be publicly asking why he isn't getting the chance. Look at how many doubters Sexton had when he replaced O'Gara but that proved to be the best decision Irish rugby made in years. Influential people need to be putting pressure on Farrell over this and other selections.

I feel for Carty because he seemed to have come into great form at exactly the right time, then is nowhere near the squad. But after today, I feel for Cooney even more.

Noone could begrudge him moving abroad for a big payday now. He would have made an enormous difference today.

It’s an open championship. The Welsh have played two matches against 14 men and scraped through. England should beat them if we can manage to keep fifteen players on. Farrell is looking under pressure and is playing close to edge tackle wise. Youngs has had his day now too. Should be interesting.

When's Ntmack back? And for the love of god please go on and beat England now.

Both Cros and Ntamack were back training this week and could be available for some of the last games.

I don't even feel that sorry for him to be honest. He'll be off in the summer for a nice big contract in France, free from any obligation he may feel to stick around, togging out in green only to box kick and shovel ball backwards at a backline coached to take it standing still 20 yards behind the gainline.

So Irish people burned welsh churches? :nono:

A good contest like I thought it would be. Surprised to see a few in here expecting an easy France win, to be honest. Thought Ireland played well again.

I get this but I do feel that there is a big chance that being a starting player for his country and having the chance to play at the highest level might mean more to him than any move to France and money could. I do agree with your point though that our players are being asked to lower themselves to a level of rugby that is far below their capability. I know a lot dislike Leinster in Ireland but we literally are home to one of the very best sides in Europe, yet we as an International team play rugby that is far below that level. That doesn't even take into account that Muster are on the rise again and both Connacht and Ulster have proven themselves to be very very good sides. For me the provinces are doing a lot right but the national team are really failing to take advantage of their good work.

Let's be real for a second. We only dislike ye because you're so good!

All 4 provinces have a better coaching team and better halfbacks than Ireland do. That shouldn't be the case.

Leinster is an absolute conveyor belt of talent and basing a test side around that quality, supplemented by quality from us other 3 should enough to see us match up well against test sides made up of players we regularly challenge and beat at club level.

The central contract system has benefited the provinces in that it's kept our best players from the clutches of the big English or French sides, but it's hindered the national team in that we don't develop enough players to that next step level of exposure at the highest level.

That, in addition to an embedded conservatism and a small, influencial rugby press with a strong sense of favouritism means we don't reward good form with selection, or poor form with dropping. We've been making the same decisions for the same reasons for 20 years now and refuse to try anything different even though we keep seeing the same results.

Rumours up here he's now off to France after being left out again

I'm done with Farrell already. All I hear is how Ireland are average and in transition. To hell are they average, they are more than capable of beating most teams but selection and for some reason not being allowed to play the style of rugby that they are so obviously able to play is whats killing them. Hate to say it but it all started in the last 2 years of Schmidt's reign where he abandoned all the Leinster style he had for risk free boring rugby.

"In transition" is just code for "not good enough". Its annoying to hear pundits and presenters say it like it means something else.

The french have left a lot of points out there today.

The header by a French forward that spared us a try was a little comical.

England and France will surely beat Wales. Imo, they've had two lucky escapes now. If the opposition avoided stupid tackles, they'd be bottom and looking to beat Italy to avoid last place.

France look like Grand Slam winners if they stay consistent.

Fecking hell, poor Dan Leavy is out for the rest of the season. He needs further surgery on his knee, though he's expected to make a full recovery.

A very talented player's career ruined by the lack of protection for jackelers.

Some history for Kiwi rugby last week!

I hadn't seen that this rule was coming in but I like it. It won't encourage more kicking because you still have the fear of kicking the ball dead, but it will make defenders think twice about just lazily shepherding the ball over the try line for an easy 22.

Actually, @Xaviesta what happens if you kick your goal line dropout over the sideline? Where's the lineout taken from?

So the kickout also has to travel 5m? You can't tip it over the goal line, pick it up and run like sometimes happens for 22 dropouts?

Booooooo! They're removing the opportunity for some hilarious brain farts there!

I have to confess I haven't seen laws around what will happen in the 2nd scenario you put forward, so my 2nd response is more a guess around what I expect would happen.

The dropout has to travel at least 5m.

If a dropout goes out on the full, I would expect a 5m lineout for the team that would have received the dropout.

Interesting stuff, it'll be interesting to see how the experiment goes. And what loopholes people find in it :D

A recipe for hilarity that the occasional "flair"/"off the cuff" player can't resist

My all time favourite is still that Aussie prop who nailed the drop goal from 40 yards when his side needed the try bonus point to make the finals!

Matt (Fat) Dunning's ''why did I do that?'' reaction gets me. As it cost the Tahs a spot in the super 12 finals, I thought it was a brilliant bit of play from a fat bloke.

Sorry about the quality but it was a well taken drop goal in all honesty.

I can't post the link but a tweet will do. Rugby Australia's proposal to host this year's Lions tour is going to be discussed at a Lions board meeting in the coming days.

Oh fascinating! I hadn't read much about this and assumed the proposal was a Lions vs Australia tour.

The idea from RA was always for the Boks to play the Lions this year as scheduled. RA is just offering to host the series if it can't be held in South Africa and won't be held in the UK.

A week or two ago, I read that the home nations were not keen on the series being in Australia due to the time difference. Tests in Australia start 11am UK time which isn't too bad if I'm being honest.

Yeah I assumed the same. Surely if it was to be played in Australia this year, it makes more sense to just switch the two tours and play SA next time around instead?

During the Reds vs Waratahs match James O'Connor put a goalline dropout out on the full. The Tahs were given the option of a 5m scrum or allowing O'Connor to take the kick again. Surprise, surprise the Tahs took the option of a 5m scrum.
