Rugby League Super League

We're just going through a bad phase, allright? We'll win tomorrow at Harlequins

Nice easy win for Manly. The boys are playing ridiculous football these days. Untouchable at times.

Tony Smith wants to continue as England head coach after this year despite returning full-time to the club scene with Super League strugglers Warrington.

The 42-year-old Australian has stepped down from his role as the Rugby Football League's technical director to become head of coaching and rugby at Wolves on a two-and-half-year contract, but will remain as national head coach in a part-time capacity.

Smith's appointment at Warrington is a response to their disappointing start to the engage Super League season under the inexperienced James Lowes.

Appointed initially in a caretaker capacity following the dismissal of Paul Cullen last May, Lowes guided the Wolves to seven wins from his first eight matches and was rewarded with a permanent appointment and a contract to the end of the 2009 season.

But they have lost all eight matches since then, a run that stretches back to August, and were booed off the pitch following their recent home defeat by Catalans Dragons a fortnight ago.

Although he will remain as first-team coach, Lowes made clear his unease over the backroom re-shuffle.

"I'm very disappointed," he told the press conference. "I'm possibly not ready for the job, not quite good enough for the job.

"But I'm sure once things settle down, we'll form a great partnership and that's what we intend to do."

Smith took charge of training on Thursday for his first match, which ironically will be against Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos, the team he guided to the championship in 2007 before becoming full-time national coach.

Smith revealed he turned down the chance to succeed Cullen last year and was keen not to miss out a second time.

"I'm excited about this," he said. "It's a very big club with a very big future.

"I've had a desire to coach at club level again so when this came about, my fear was that maybe I'd miss out on a great opportunity."

Smith also revealed he hopes to help Lowes, whom he appointed to his Great Britain backroom staff in 2007, re-establish his coaching credentials.

"Jimmy and I have worked together at Great Britain level and I know what a great coach he is," he said.

"Part of my remit will be getting Jimmy back to being a Super League head coach if that's what he wants.

"I applaud the club for not doing what most clubs do and that is sack their coaches, send them out into the wilderness and we never see them again.

"It's a difficult one for Jimmy but I'm sure he's going to bounce back."

Great news :D

Feel a bit sorry for Lowes but it's the right decision for the club.

That was a bit of a shocker to be honest - Fair play to Celtic though, not many teams over the past few seasons have kept our score so low!

Batley played against one of our local amateur teams over the weekend - think they only just won.

Rubbish!

Pilkingtons turned out to be made of glass and we thrashed them 34-24 ;)

Of all the teams in all the world we get your lot....bugger.

Come on Chelsea. ;)

I could say the same! I suppose its more interesting than getting some no-mark team like Batley or something ;) and it not really being much of a game to watch.

My moneys on the winner of this gme to go on to win the cup, which to be honest is hardly a bold prediction but for anybody who doesn't really follow the game I guess it'll show how big a tie this is!

No-mark club??!! I'll have you know we've won the R.L.CHALLENGE CUP 3 times.....it was in 1896, 1897 and 1900 but that's beside the point.

I have fond memories of Batley....as kids we used to get in through a hole in the fence that they never bothered to fix....I'm sure the club threw people in rather than out to build the crowd numbers up.

Nice to see the Saints v Leeds game happening before the final...should be a cracker.

Did you go to the match? We were pretty class second half, no Idea how we didn't take the lead. I honestly thought we were going to get the win, another stupid handling error led to your final try which finished us off. Still, we looked a much better outfit even after just a few days under Smith. Thought we were in for a hammering after the first 2 tries.

The game tonight between Celtic & Wakefield has been postponed 35 minutes before kick off.

Seems like something serious has happend though as the reason its being kept a secret so far is because families need to be told.

Fingers crossed it isn't too bad, and if it is then my thoughts are with those affected.

Something must be bad to cancel the Wakey game....

Oh, and we are top of the league...

Team P W D L F A PTS
1 Leeds 6 5 0 1 137 70 10
2 St Helens 6 5 0 1 136 70 10

And....

Leigh 28-34 Batley :)

hi jg
you must be pleased about friday's result?

hello Erica!

yeah made up with the result on Friday - Was well deserved imo. Not impressed at all with Leeds and their tactics. Thuggery at its best from the usual idiot Ryan Bailey.

But was nice to get the win after them beating us in the final.

I'm a bit concerned with this thing at Celtic though - sounds like it could be a tragedy of sorts to be honest.

i read on some rugby league forum that some Wakefield reserve player had a heart attack in a reserve game, his parents dont yet know which is why it hasnt been announced

Martyn Sadler(TRL and League Express) said:
The information we have so far is that a young Wakefield player suffered a heart attack in the reserve team game between the Crusaders and Wakefield, and was rushed to hospital, but unfortunately couldn't be saved, and sadly passed away.

His parents are currently travelling to South Wales, but I understand they don't yet know of the tragedy.

I would therefore be grateful if no one would mention the name of the young player until we know that his parents have been informed.

I'm sure that every member of this forum would join with me in sending our sincere condolences to the player's family, and to the Wakefield club.

The club seems to have been beset by tragedy in the last twelve months.

he is less than impressed with the villa score too.

Awful news

Rugby League player dies in game

A Wakefield rugby league player has died after collapsing during a Sunday reserve team game against Celtic Crusaders at Maesteg.

Leon Walker, 21, collapsed in the 63rd minute and was airlifted to Morriston Hospital, Swansea where he was pronounced dead.

Walker is the second Wakefield player in the last six months.

Cook Island international Adam Watene, 31, died after collapsing during a training session in October.

The reserve team game at Maesteg kicked off at 1500 GMT and the Super League clash between the two clubs, due to start four hours later, was called off.

Wakefield Chairman Ted Richardson said: "This is a tragic loss for all involved with Rugby League.

"Clearly everybody at the club is devastated by this news and all our sympathies and prayers are with the family at this time."

Nigel Wood, RFL chief executive, said: "This is truly shocking and tragic news and our heartfelt condolences go to the parents, family and friends of Leon as well as the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats club.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those involved at this devastating time."

Walker, a second rower or loose forward, signed for Wakefield in November 2008 having spent three years at Salford City Reds where he earned representative honours with Yorkshire and England in 2007.

Before joining Salford Walker played for amateur side Churwell Chiefs.

RIP Leon Walker

I'm going Wigan match tonight at the JJB, I mean DW Stadium, or whatever they're calling it now

I heard all super league matches over weekend are having a minutes silence for Walker.

I'll be at the Halliwell Jones on Sunday, hoping to see back to back wins from the Wire, was pleased with the performance last week, though the goal kicking needs to be improved.

Was terrible news to hear about Leon Walker, no age at all.
