Rugby League Super League 2010

Don't worry, you could pair Fozzard and Ray French at halfback and still manage to beat Wire :nervous:

We might need to!!

It'll no doubt be a cracking game but i'm just not as confident as I would be going into it with one of Eastmond or Pryce fully fit and available!

Any injuries on the Wire front?? Monagahan? Briers? morley?? please?

None whatsoever, our only headache is who to leave out. 2 of Myler, Higham, Bridge, Riley, Cooper, and Vinnie will miss out due to the amount of players fit and playing well.

If it stays that way, we've every chance of winning at OT(just as long as someone beats Saints for us)

Honourable mentions to Wellens, Cudjoe, Hicks, Eastmond, O'Meley, Roby, L.Anderson, and Buderus.

Yeh, I'm not sure about those three either, and I can see why they went for Roby though

I see Wigan have signed Fielden and Coley for two more seasons, well an option on Coley's for 2012. No surprise in that reallu

The news about Fielden shocks me. I'd have thought the news of "Big Willy" signing for Hull KR next season would have sent him to retirement, if not a mental breakdown

Indeed, but no doubt he's had a much better season, and will of course had to take a huge cut in money as well

'Big Willy' will get folded in two next year by our wrecking machine Sia Soliola! He's gonna have a tough season Mason is imo, he's a target for many a player wanting to show how 'hard' they are. personally too I think his standards have slipped in recent years but like Perry coming to us a fresh start may reinvigorate him.

I'd also add James Roby was a must for me in the team of the year, I appreciate Monas has played well but Roby has been something else this season, even better than the season he won MOS in - and that's saying something.

Rumour has it also that due to our injury crisis Matty Smith will be playing for us this Friday - I can't see it happening meself but stranger things have happened!

Agree about Mason, he's in for a rough ride. I wonder who'll enrage SL fans and players alike more, "Big Willy" or Ryan "cheap shot" Bailey?

Surely it's not allowed that Smith can play for Saints after being registered as a Salford player for 2010 season? I'd have thought a letter will be winging it's way to the RFL if it happens, especially after the fixture advantage Saints have just had(playing after Wire, so knowing what they needed).

I agree on Mason as well, there'll be plenty of people desperate to better him and show him what they're all about

No doubt he'll be better prepared for his introduction into Super League than Gareth Thomas was, though. :)

Looks like the Matty Smith rumour is true and he'll play Friday.

It's a scandal that a player not included in Saints 2010 squad, not paid by Saints for 2010 hence not counted on the salary cap can be included in the play-offs.

RFL incompetence rears it's head again I see

I think it's been wangled because we've for the first time in a few seasons been under the cap this season by some way and have been able to fit him in, albeit on probably substantially less than he'd normally be on.

I think the Lee Smith to Leeds earlier in the season was a similar scenario with him coming back but on a reduced salary to enable him to fit under the cap.

It's just like Warrington themselves did though a couple of seasons back when Johns was brought over for the play offs especially, only difference being Matty Smith isn't a world class player!

I have to say the signing Coley for another year is a step backwards for us, I know he is a prop forward but he couldn't catch a bloody cold.

I was annoyed to have missed this programme when it went out live but anyone interested in rugby from many years ago should be able to catch it on iPlayer or a torrent somewhere.

Eddie Waring: Mr Rugby League
On: BBC 4
Date: Tuesday 7th September 2010
Time: 21:00 to 22:00

Eddie Waring introduced millions of viewers to rugby league, but within his own northern heartland he was both loved and loathed. For some he was loveable Uncle Eddie, to others an embarrassing caricature who appeared on light entertainment shows and didn't take the game seriously. Were people laughing with him or at him, at rugby league and at the north? He was also an expert and an entrepreneur - a fixer and visionary who entered dangerous territory as he tried to take the game to new levels.

I don't know, he seems to have done alright whenever I've seen him, but the difference is he won't be a starter and should get less minutes with Lima signed

That's my prediction for the play-offs, I can't tip a winner between Wigan and Warrington, as they're the class of the field this season, and there is very very little between them, an injury here or citing there could make a big difference.

Pretty confident with most of the tips, although can definitely see Saints winning to put Warrington into the elimination section, but Wigan should beat Leeds, so they'll obviously put them together in clubcall if you ask me, unless something happens to Saints, in particular a forward like Roby/Graham

And I'm not sure about the Hull derby, that could go either way

Really?

The league does suggest otherwise and well we've done you home and away this year.

Warrington fans surely not getting over confident are they?

Pretty sure Ed's not a Warrington fan, more like a closet Pie-eater, I reckon!

As a Wires fan myself, I'm certainly not over-confident going into the Saints game (how could you be with our record in matches between the sides?), but I do fancy our chances in this one. Of course, the downside is that even if we do beat Saints tomorrow, we'll probably have to do so again in a couple of weeks' time.

It does but you didn't have the distraction of Wembley and we didn't have the luxury of knowing how many we needed in the final match.

It's a scandal how Saints got that advantage. That's not me being bitter, it's just the way it is. In no other sport would two matches so strongly linked be played at different times. It makes a mockery of the competition and the integrity of the league and Sky.

As for us getting over confiedent, I wish I could see us beating Saints once let alone twice :nervous:

Thanks for pointing this out Marching; I've just watched it on the bbc i-player. Definitely recommended viewing, it showed sides of Eddie a lot of us wouldn't have been aware of, and the programme certainly leaves you with a tinge of sadness at the end.

I'm not a Warrington fan, I've not really got a team, just love watching the game and in particular the big games, if I had to pick one under duress it would probably be Wigan, as I've got mates who support them and have been to the JJB (as it was then) a few times.

We'll just see, those are my predictions, I'll stand by them

Ah my bad - I for some reason had him down as a wire fan.

The distraction of Wembley thing can't really be used as an excuse I don't think, over the years we've had Wembley and still finished top. Also your coach decided on resting players against quins which wasn't really a good idea, hindsight is a wonderful thing though I suppose.

I actually don't think us knowing what we had to win by was as big as an advantage as some say. If anything it just added pressure - If we'd played at the same time then we'd have more than likely played a 'free'er' game and not had that target hanging over us. I always think it's easier to set a score than try and make one.

For me whoever wins on Friday will go through to the final, if you beat us then when we come up against you then it'll be tough knowing the record has slipped and I just don't think we'll get ourselves up for another game of that size. If we win then we'll think we're unbeatable and take that form all the way.

Sorry - i had you down as a Wire fan for some reason! My point still stands though, Saints have been better than Warrington this season :D

As I said, I still think you can beat them, but will be tough with the half-back problems you have

You raise me 2nd, and I'll raise you level on points with a nice shiny CC trophy :D

You were a last minute try in cock-eyed scheduled game better than usin the regular season albeit after an injury ravaged campaign in comparison to our fairly healthy one.

Either way, not much to choose between the top 5. I fancy it'll go down to Wigan v Wire/Saints at OT. Leeds look spent and Hudds would do well to beat Leeds and Wire/Saints away back to back.

Great start for Warrington. Lucky that the elbow by Clarke wasn't seen

EDIT
Saints have taken over, lead 10-8....and Matty Smith makes a 40-20

Half time

18-8 to Saints, the Saints forwards have been completely dominant for about 20minutes, Warrington forwards need to step it up

Atrocious, simply atrocious from Warrington. If they ever release a "how not to play wet weather rugby" dvd then they've got their case in point tonight. We just lost the plot and kept coughing up the ball while Saints played the conditions as well as any professional team should.

I'm confident of taking one of the Hull clubs next week but Saints probably loom in the semi :(

This Saints team have managed to constantly surprise me all season. Tonight we were simply fantastic, played the conditions perfectly and toughed it up in defence when it mattered.

Matty Smith deserves huge credit as does Jamie Foster, but to be fair 1-17 were spot on.

I have to say i'm going to be getting right behind Leeds on Sunday, club call would be brilliant and it'd mean we could avoid giving the Wire one last chance to do us at KR.

It's also worth mentioning that we've turned a very good side over tonight without Leon Pryce, Kyle Eastmond, Johnny Lomax & Gary Wheeler.

Yeah, "playing the conditions" was the major difference between the sides. To be fair to Saints, their handling in atrocious weather was exemplary - I can only remember them dropping the ball twice in the whole game. After a scorching start, Warrington were hopeless for the rest of the game.

With a week off next week, Saints have gained themselves a huge advantage now. I reckon Warringtons's play-off hopes are virtually over for another year.

Not on that form. We were as flat as a pancake as soon as Wellens fluked Saints first try.

We seriously need to get Monaghan back to 9, the craft and direction he offers from there is second to none. It's a waste playing him in the halves as he's mediocre at best playing 7.

Another thing we should which is obvious is rein in our expansive style when it's chucking it down. Offloading and cut-out passing a bar of soap is madness and isn't going to stick 9 times out of 10 in those conditions.

Must learn from this or see a fantastic season end in a whimper :nervous:

If Leeds beat Wigan it's most likely that Saints would pick Warrington out anyway (assuming all other games went with "seeding".

Congrats on tonight JG. Saints are beginning to get on my nerves now!

I wouldn't go that far, we saw Saints give Tony Smith's Leeds a shellacking in 2007 play-offs only to get it in return at OT, when it truly mattered. Just this Indian sign they have over us that worries me. We'll have to beat them at some stage to win SL so if we can't then we'll never win the league. Simple as that.

Maybe the lack of "do or die" element took the edge off us or maybe it was just the lack of practice in those conditions, whatever it was, we must learn from it and must do a million times better from here on in.

We have the coach, we have the quality, the only question is do we have the belief and mental strength required to beat St.Helens? We'll probably find out in a fortnight in the last ever game at KR...

Another thing that tonight showed up...the importance of goal kicking. Despite how dire we performed we were only outscored 4 tries to 3. Saints making 4 points 6 and taking the 2 for every offence made a hell of a difference.

Westwood, Bridge, and Briers are all hot and cold goal kickers which can be a disadvantage in high pressure, tight games like the play-offs.

I'd imagine that came into the thinking a lot when deciding to sacrifice Mathers for Hodgson but for now we lack a 90% goal kicker like Richards, Sinfield, and Foster/Eastmond in comparison to our main rivals for the trophy.

It would appear my fair city is going somewhat crazy about the game tomorrow. So my question as I don't really follow egg chasing, who's going to win FC or KR?

I agree, I can't see Warrington winning it, but hey, don't listen to me, I thought they'd win last night

The Sants forwards just dominated, and that was I'm sure part of the reason why Briers had such a mare, he was absolutely terrible last night

Fully deserved win for Saints, at least you Warrington guys will get a chance for revenge, because I don't see anyway that you won't play eachother, as I'm sure the final four will include Wigan, Warrington and Leeds, and even if Leeds win, I'm sure for the sheer fact that they always beat Warrington, I suspect they'll pick Warrington over Wigan in clubcall
