Rugby 2017 Discussion

Much of the reaction I've read is about Vunipola and how he maybe should have been red carded, not yellow carded.

Nah, that would have been harsh. There were a number of other similar clearouts through the match, his was just the most blatantly obvious one, and with that hint of elbow/shoulder too. He should still count himself very lucky though that he didn't lose them the match.

Was interested in your point of view, has that started already? I hope there isn't too much nonsense in the build-up to the final test.
Havent checked yet but our media are cringeworthy at times. Ive been enjoying the Lions games so far and always love when teams tour. Before the tour started it was already predicted to be a 3-0 thumping but even the first test was competitive and I dont think our media here gives touring teams the respect they deserve.
On top of that the touring Lions fans are great fun where ever they go.

He hasn't been consistent on this tour until today and the one he missed was not the hardest of the 5 (I think) that he landed.

This tour he hasn't been his usual standard but normally he's pretty reliable.

I see on our biggest newspapers website that 72% of readers think SBW deserved to be sent off. Will be interesting to see the match reports though.

Cheers, let us know sure.

I've been reading comments on thejournal.ie, a few interesting points there. For example, Faletau's try wouldn't have happened with Te'o on the pitch because he blew a similar one last week. Also, a lot of people highlighting that Sean O'Brien will probably be cited :(

Lions beat the Sunwolves 94-7 in a result that does the Lions the world of good, puts the pressure on the Crusaders but isn't a great look for the competition. The Lions scored 40 points in the last 22 minutes. That's unacceptable at this level. I want to see the Lions win the Super Rugby title this year but it's undeniable there'll be gripes about the format if they do win the competition.

I think there's a fair chance Sean O'Brien will be suspended from the third test.

Garcès is a shit referee. Nowadays France is just out to spoil Rugby.

Sean O'Brien's in trouble too i reckon. I think he'll be suspended for about the same time as SBW.

What about Poite? He's got the next test and has history at Eden Park.

He is better but I don't like french referees in general. They have no consistency and I suspect that they barely know rugby laws.

A 4 week ban is basically a two match ban, 1 test and 1 Super Rugby game. Doesn't sit well with me and i haven't agreed with type of sanction for a very long time.

11 weeks was Tuqiri's suspension for this red card worthy spear tackle on Richie McCaw but he only missed one test. Doesn't feel right even 11 years on.

Week suspensions are ridiculous. It's the same in the GAA sports here. Match suspensions are the only way to go.

Sean O'Brien's citing dismissed, he's free to play in the final test. Delighted for him, he's been exceptional against the All Blacks several times in defeat and was one of the outstanding players again yesterday.

I expected O'Brien to be suspended. It'd be a hell of a storyline if he was to score the winning try next weekend.

I hope for the sake of the PRO12 they don't bite off more than they can chew in terms of expansion. Super Rugby did that and it's become an unworkable mess. 14 teams if fine, 15 would probably be too many factoring into account the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup that would need to be played. Reading about this on Australian site on Saturday many were interested to see how this goes in the hope the other South African sides join the PRO12. I for one hope the South African element remains in Super Rugby but for others in Australia, there won't be much sadness if South Africa departs Super Rugby.

I'd glossed over totally in that article that Zebre are out of money. Broke Italian teams who get beaten 90% of the time with limited fan numbers vs very far away teams with (I'm guessing) more committed fans and better players?

A personal example - I had an Italian client where we spent pretty much every lesson talking about 6 Nations. Hours on it. However, he couldn't even name the Italian club sides in the various Euro competitions - zero interest in the club game. I'd imagine SA fans would be knowledgable than that.

Never watched rugby in my life - bit curious about it - what should I watch in order to find out if I like it? :D

Start with the Lions game this Saturday morning
People in this thread probably wont like me saying it, but I'd also give a rugby league game a go, Castleford are very good to watch at the moment, they play Thursday night at 8pm.

Cool. Should I learn something about the rules first?

Maybe read Wikipedia on scoring, but you can get into rules and the intracies of the games if you enjoy the spectacle

Union is a lot more complex in its rules than league. A lot more interpretation allowed, which can be confusing

No, just watch then you will choose the one you prefer and learn the rules. League and Union are very different, aesthetically.

Alright. What's the main difference between them?

No rucks and simulated scrums in league and 13 players instead of 15. It's faster, more direct but less sophisticated.

Like any sport part of the excitement is the background stories and the individual battles taking place. Try and check out some news reports of previous games and a few of the key players etc. Even if you dont know the rules you can get a good handle on how its all going by working out the key players during the game and what they are doing.

Hopefully you wont get Kiwi commentators, we have horribly biased and one eyed commentary teams.

Generally just put the commentary on mute, Sky have been absolutely unbearable up here as well. I don't really get the Lions thing, it means nothing to me compared to Ireland matches but I do obviously want them to win yet Sky are almost making me root for New Zealand. The hype has been insane and the contributions of Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood have been particularly ridiculous.

Ive been to at least 1 Lions game here in NZ each tour since 1970 and thats stuck with me, easily my favourite side to see touring NZ. Also back before the world cup Tours from other countries were more common and had more games than today but thats all changed so the Lions tour is sort of like the last throwback to how things used to be. On top of that the Lions supporters who come over are great fun, they bring an atmosphere to our games we rarely see.
No matter what the result this weekend I think this has been a really good tour, have enjoyed the games.

Alright. What's a good rugby (news etc, profiles) site to check out? :)
