Roy Keane

Except for the sad fact that our greatest ever manager and greatest ever captain don't get along, this is great interview.

I agree.

I'll add though, rather controversially, that he was not only our greatest captain, but also our greatest player in the premier league era. More influential than Cantona and more instrumental than Ronaldo.

Of course, many would disagree.

At least few hail Keane for his humanitarianism. Let his offhand Keanism not spoil our fond memories of that monster midfielder. And he was ours.
It's not Keanism. It's a utterly horrible thing to make fun of and a half decent human being would have apologized by now. I don't give passes for truly despicable people regardless of how good they were in their profession and frankly nobody should.

Legend. Great player and isn't scared to speak his mind, which is an extremely rare quality to find nowadays.

A genius (and yes, in many ways Keane was a genius) often has serious character flaws. I'm not condoning his behavior. I'm ignoring it.

I just can't. Stuff like these aren't character flaws. They show an inherent lack of character and empathy. I've met enough people in my life like Keane to know they are rotten to core and will pretty much always be. Absolute shame.

Is Keane dead to me? No way. United legend and always will be. He earned that one night in Turin in 1999 alone. Hes just an idiot - but he was as a player too. Its part of what made him so special.

Why do you rely on footballers to be a moral compass? It’s abit silly to expect when they don’t claim to be such.

also why should everyone think like you?

These dead threads are embarrassing and Each OP who uses that word to describe a player should be at least warned or banned.
Everyone on here has lost someone over time through age , illness or tragedy. To use that is just cringe.
I hate Liverpool but would I start a thread is Gerrard dead to me ? No chance.
I’m sure you could have used another title.

Agreed that he was a greatest ever player in PL era due to impact and tenure. But I think Cantona is the most influential. Despite only being at the club a few years, it all starts with him.

Don't think anybody played well that day, on either side, the highlight the winning goal apart was the Liverpool team turning up late still in the suits they'd worn at their Miami Vice auditions earlier in the day.
It wasn't a day for the flair players but Keane was excellent and comfortably man of the match.

Keane has earned every right to say and think whatever he likes about Manchester United and his ex boss SAF, especially when it concerns him during his time at the club. And as fans we should listen and empathise, even if we don’t like what he says.

I doubt we’d have been as successful without him, the only other comparable player SAF could have signed instead was Vierra and he wasn’t able to sustain his top level for as long as Keane.

The most elite performers have the highest standards and demand the same from others. Keane and SAF were identical in that regard.

I have so many amazing memories of ecstasy during the Keane years and I’ll always be thankful to him for that. It’s a shame for both men that their relationship remains as it ended. That’s between them. As a fan, I will always love both.
Spot on post Sam,well said.

The word dead has multiple meanings depending on the context. We can't just limit its use because you're over-sensitive about it.

Keane is just a bitter bitter man, great player for us, yes, but it doesn't make him any less of a horrible person.

Fergie wasn't perfect, but he's one of the greatest managers in the history of any sport, and a great human being as well. Going after him now is just classless.

Keane can go feck himself.

I don't rely on footballers for anything except for entertainment, however I'll call a twat one when I see one, regardless of their profession.

And you don't have to think like me, but I would think we can all agree that mocking a former colleague for crying about the deaths of family members and seriously ill child crosses the line. It's not even about morality, just about showing a baseline level of empathy and respect.

Keane was and always will be a hero to United supporters, indispensable for virtually all his all his United career, a leader who never gave in, never tolerated anything less than 100% from his team mates and genuinely lead from the front, Roy Keane as a player was priceless, but nobody is indispensable for ever, sadly Roy couldn't accept that and as his powers and influence waned he tried compensating by becoming more and more vociferous, even challenging SAFs decisions, there was only ever going to be one winner and that wasn't Keane and being one of the games greatest ever winners he couldn't accept gracefully that he lost and he and SAFs relationship broke down irreparably. Keane still wants United to be the best and as ever doesn't hold back. Keane belongs with the very, very best who wore Uniteds shirt.

Aye no doubt about it. We can appreciate Keane while acknowledging his flaws and we can do the same with Fergie who didn't get everything right all of the time too (got a bloody lot right of course ).

Man that's some serious underrating of his performance. Must have stopped half of Liverpools attacks virtually by himself and won the ball back about 12/13 times. Also his passing is so crisp. I think Kante is world class but he's a level below Keano (especially passing ability)

His game against Liverpool at Anfield in 03/04 was fantastic, I REALLY wish someone could do highlights video of it as it was a masterclass. Must have made a hundred passes and didn't give the ball away once.

I don't know if it was the pitch, or the occasion, or both, but it was the worst match i've ever seen between the two sides in over 40 years, a total none event, Keane might have played well, I don't recall, I know most of us were just glad it was over.

What in the name of feck are you talking about?

I will, thanks.

Imagine don't remember what you said...

Imagine carry on but then went on a posting spree...

Imagine thinking the captain of 1 of our most successful period is just "decent"...

Imagine thinking the above imagination is "valid"...

Imagine all the people...

Who mentioned Scholes?
Which midfielder that Keane played with was better than him? I too believe Robson was better (although only just) but you don't mean Bryan. So who? Beckham? Butt? Ince? Veron? Unless you're counting Giggs as a mid, I struggle to see who you could make a case for if not Scholes.

I might have meant Scholes, I might not, who knows, in the grand scheme of things who friggin cares, my reply was to some comedian who posted:

Best was a decent enough winger when he turned up I guess.

" Cole appreciates the support he’s had from his former team-mates but singles out his old strike partner Dwight Yorke and Roy Keane for special mention.

“Yorkie’s been phenomenal and Roy phoned me up to ask if he could come and visit me. He turned up at the hospital and we had two hours having a laugh and a joke.

“People have their opinions of Roy. He was a phenomenal player, an unbelievable captain, but to me he’s a special guy.”

He is a very misunderstood guy I feel. He has his good sides and his bad sides.

Love Coley, but the misunderstood have to stick together.

Ok the thread title should be changed quicksmart.

Roy Keane is probably one of the most divisive ex players in our history. Signed at a time when the mega money was just beginning to creep into football. I think it's fair to say that at less than 4m pounds he turned into one of the most influential signings of all time.

I believe Roy to be one of the most contradictory individual I've ever seen. He tells a story of Sir Alex and David Gill and the whole mutv debacle, one thing to note, both Keane and Ferguson were winners and never in a million years would Keane accept mediocrity for a few years seeing as he was 34 when the whole thing kicked off. Keane was an unreal warrior and if he expected blood he got blood

I listened to the whole interview and and I have to say I agree with most that he said.

The "wazzapp" thing was funny. Did not know he was punched in the face during training and then next day just got on with his job. Fantastic guy.

Ignore his behaviour and just remember the football and leadership he gave us over 11/12 years.
Thank you Keano.

Not over sensitive about it.
It just shouldn’t be used, call the title keane is a w****r if he wants. It’s pure attention seeking these sort of threads.

He called it ratsapp:D

I enjoyed The Matty Taylor story, obviously afraid to say it face to face to him.
I thought Neville spoke well, he went a little OTT on Walters and maybe he could have said I’m glad SAF is back to full health but other than that it’s good listening.
