Is Rooney done at the required level?

I don't think dropping Rooney would cause all that furore amongst the press. There have been plenty of articles recently about him not being the player he was. I think the bigger problem would come from the dressing room where apparently he's still quite popular.

He should at least announce his retirement from club football in 2021.

I am not a Rooney hater like some on here, however, I am sick of seeing us accommodating him in the side at the expense of shape and play. He is still a good player, but I no longer know what he is: he lacks the creativity to play as a 10, is definitely not a midfielder, and appears to lack the positional discipline that a 9 requires.

We need to move on from him.

The worst bit is that through the game I was thinking that I am being too harsh on him. Funny thing is, he never made me feel that 'this was good'. The best I got was that's ok/ not poor.

He really isn't and hasn't been for a long while now.

He's turning me into a hater. Haven't disliked a player like him before, he's just that bad. Everyone sees it. It's not just United fans that think he's done, everyone thinks so.

Mourinho has added other big personalities to the dressing room in Pogba and Ibra, and should be capable of dropping Rooney.
good point. How long until these big personalities speak out on Rooney? I'm sure ibra and pogba didn't come to United to be stymied by a bloke with the face of shrek and the skills of a donkey.

This is 2016 and a manager has to respect the power of the press. It's a sad truth.

He should have a look at Moyes and Van Gaal. Giving Rooney all he wants didn't save them. It's a results oriented business. If he gets the results, the press won't be able to say much even if he does it without Rooney. If he doesn't get the results, he'll be gone. Rooney will still be here.

To think he had the bare-faced cheek to suggest a longer contract earlier this season.:lol::nervous::nervous::lol::lol:

Couple of times today Ibra looked properly livid with Rooney, along with a couple of glances where he just had the look of "I can't believe I have to play with this guy."

Rooney just fundamentally wants to play differently then our wingers want to play. He wants to work it wide and then get in to the box for the cross. Our wingers aren't crossers and want to be played in for runs from outside to inside/dribble with it. Rooney's strength is not playing those balls.

Given that the only wide players we have who really suit Rooney's approach are Valencia and Young then Mou needs to ask himself if Roo offers enough to do that as I don't think an argument can be made for that. He's still got something to offer, not enough to match his wages but that's not his fault, but enough to make him useful to have.

I just can't see that. Dropping him would mean that other players will play more, and in addition, from my experience it is hard to imagine that players would be unhappy that an under-performing colleague of them has been dropped. Usually it is the other way around, if someone is higher in the hierarchy and works worse than you, you get annoyed.

don't feel like watching anymore if Rooney is selected

This. I'll look up the team selections before the game, and won't waste time watching him stumble through game.
What? You think Woodward has any blame for this? Ridiculous. If anything, he did his job brilliantly.

Calm down. I didn't put any blame on Woodward. But on the small chance that Rooney is playing because of his supposed commercial profile, I hope Woodward realises that the fans are sick of the sight of Wayne Rooney.

I wouldn't go to the "official Wayne Rooney Hospital" even if I was shot.

We should be building the side to get the best out of Pogba, Rashford and Martial and Rooney's inclusion in the side is stifling that.

How bad was he today? Was it a standard poor performance made worse by the fact that we've lost to fecking Watford? Or was it some new all time low?

Honestly, next time I see a match with Rooney in the starting lineup, I'm not going to watch it.

I keep saying it but I can't believe that two managers like LVG and Mourinho (knowing their personalities) would keep catering to Rooney like this. It's out of their hands and all on the club. If any of Woodie's minions are lurking on the CAf tell him to - sort this shit out. We need better leadership. And surely if it's to do with sponsors then those sponsors are blind as a bat if they can't see he's offering nothing good for marketing. Completely baffled.

I don't think it can be denied any longer and it's become glaringly obvious because he's in a pivotal role for our team. His passing in particular killed us today because it eliminated our attacks. I believe he can be a good substitute striker for us because overall, he's not a poor finisher, but we can't have him in a role where he has so much responsibility in finding our runners with precise passes. We need Mata or Herrera in that role.

I am sick of actually reading this. He is overweight and had the agility of an elephant, he has the worst first touch I have seen an attacking player have, he cannot pass unless it is to Valencia and the timing of Valencia is perfect, he cannot cross at all, he cannot press but instead orders others to press while he is staying, and he doesn't want to get involved in parts of the pitch where there are a lot of opposition players. But somehow, he is a good player.

No, he isn't. He would look bad in any EPL team, and look average in lower divisions.

It was below his usual bad performances. Though the lines are getting blurred at the moment to be honest.

Just a standard Rooney performance where he offers absolutely nothing to the team and breaks all our counter attacks.

Agreed. Mata or miki for me but he can't be given so much responsibility anymore.

There was a moment where were attacking, with Zlatan charging into the box, and the ball went out wide on the right to Rooney in acres of space, and he chipped his cross about 20ft in the air and behind the goal.

People say he is good for us commercially, yet he is putting some fans off watching and following United. He becomes a squad player from today and gone in Jan/summer.

Imagine watching a toddler that got 3 hours sleep last night trying to play football with pork belly sellotaped to each foot.

I know:rolleyes: God help the club if we give him an extension.

Well mate, I am as calm as one can be after 1:3 defeat to Watford. Anyway, I can't fathom that anyone can force Jose fecking Mourinho to start a player because of commercial value. And it is completely different question, what amount of that is left in said player?

Rooney is now paying the price for not looking after his body, for years he came back every pre-season overweight from overeating and drinking. I'm not sticking up for him but another factor is that when Rooney came onto the scene at 16 he was physically built like a 26 year old and now looks like hes in his late 30's/early 40's despite being only 30, he even looks older than Giggs.

Its becoming a joke that he still features so regularly, despite being so far off the pace, looks knackered after only an hour.

Point. Yes he has been at it since for 15 years in the EPL but he is still on 31 in a months time. He's conditioning would have been much better if he had been as anal as Cristiano or even a Novak Djokovic about he's lifestyle. I'm sure if Wayne had foreseen he's physical regression, he might have done just that, dude loves the game.

I think he has a clause in his contract. I thought it was shite but I think it's the truth now.

No other explanation.
