Is Rooney done at the required level?

Well, technically, it is. The role of the press is to hold the establishment to account. In sporting terms, proper questioning as to why Rooney has a free pass in the United team is a reasonable expectation.
This isn't government we are talking about. It's entertainment and private enterprise.

I don't want him as a starter, but I don't think he's finished. Based on performances the majority of our players are finished or simply not good enough, and I don't think that's the case. Rooney is an overpaid squad player nowadays but the main problem at the moment is Mourinho in my opinion, in the same way Van Gaal was before. We don't play football and we don't even try.

With the *********** we just tried to keep the ball, he was conservative and there was no room for risk and creativity. And this man is setting the team in such a mediocre way now. We sit in the middle of nowhere, we run back to our goal to defend and then we play random balls in attack. Even against Feyenoord with a different system and without Rooney our game was garbage.

We should try a more dynamic play, with more decision and attacking intent, pressing higher. And if some players get tired we can change them in the second half. The way we play now, speculative, adjusting to inferior teams is pathetic and uneffective. I don't think the players buy this approach as it makes them look worse than they are. If I had to say who's finished after this start of the season I'd pick Mourinho before anyone else, but by the moment I think it's better to avoid these final judgements and give time to see how things evolve during the season.

Stopped reading when you said 'I don't think he is finished' - I am afraid those 6 words in that order made the rest of what you wrote wrong, whatever it was

Not good enough form wise to start, takes ages to get going so pointless as a sub. Seems like he does the bare minimum. Accepts he is not good enough up front - without really giving his all. This is going on a few years at this rate. Can't pass, can't tackle, can't dictate play. Not much he can do these days

It's incredible to think that Rooney is still only 30, but then again, he's played in the PL since he was 16, and he's just completely lost it now. It's been coming since Fergie's last season, but now he's just useless, a complete nothing player who offers nothing, and it's really a shame that it's ended like this, because he has been a great player for us once, but it's easy to forget now when he's so shite. I wish he would do like Gary Neville did and just retire, he's only 30, but he's burned out, maybe he can go to America, but he's done as a player at the highest level, an absolute shadow of that wonderful player he once was.

My god was he awful today. I have no idea what the hell has happened to him. How can a player of his peak fall to this kind of low. I swear, Ruud or Saha, who he eclipsed in his prime, would probably be more effective options today.

And is it not odd that he actually got my stick from the media when he was in his prime than he does now, when he's utter garbage?

He's awful. I bet he can't even pass gas without shitting himself.

We tended to get rid of players well before they hit the sort of lows that Rooney is at now, back in the good old days. Probably why it's such an unusual occurrence to us all.

Mark Hughes and Paul Ince certainly wasn't done when Fergie sold them in '95.

Rooney has always been a patchy player and could easily go 8-10 games without a goal but at least he contributed and could do the basics, now he can barely control the ball and it's not surprising if he doesn't even get a chance during a game. Needs a 2-3 weeks out of the team.

He looks well past it. Anxious to see how Jose will tackle this. He'l probably remove him slowly from the team.

It will boil down to Mou's or Rooney's future at OT and Mou will of course not be daft. And he will also realize that Fellaini is not a DM, no creativity in his passing and he can't fulfil his defensive duties.

I don't really understand why anybody is surprised. I think it was widely speculated when he burst on to the scene that his body was well in advance of his age and that he was always likely to have problems playing into his 30's

It would be daft to suggest that he has never had great technique but he was always a player who could get away with being a bit clumsy. In fact, he could often turn a heavy touch into his advantage as it almost lured opponents in before he outmuscled/outpaced them. In his prime he was one of the fastest, strongest and most dynamic players in the league so to lose all of that was bound to have a knock-on effect

Also related to his physical fitness - If you look at two of his particularly bad errors today (the one where he had to chase the Shaw pass and ran it straight out and also the horrible cross that went straight into the stand) both came about because he had been made to sprint for the ball. Anybody who has played any level of football will tell you that when you are tired your basic ability to pass/control the ball goes.

I'm afraid that he's no longer starting calibre material in a team with championship ambitions. But with that salary it's tough to bench him or move him.

Should be right away rather than slowly. He's become a waste of space. United are playing with 10 players every game.

Has the board been behaving like they do give a feck about the money... Hell we lost 20 millon on Di maria...and couldnt care less.

Rooney has been a great player for United, even if not universally loved. Time catches up with everyone, though. He's played top flight football since he was a boy, and has many, many miles on those legs. It's not harsh to say that he's simply lost it. He'll always have moments of magic, but he's clearly a spent force (and he was a force in his prime). Sir Alex knew it, and would have jettisoned Rooney had he not retired. As it is, he put Rooney's departure on a plate for Moyes, who bottled it completely. It will be a big test of Jose's mettle to see how he handles this. He's no fool, and will only tolerate these performances for so long.

Its becoming so obvious that surely he will be dropped soon. We live in hope. Its not just that he's shite its the way we have to move other players around to fit him in. Hopefully Mkhitaryan will take his place in the team.

After they leave, or players on other teams, etc.? Yes I would expect you might hear something. Have you?
Well don't know who can say it. Is there some player who has been long enough to say it other than his pals, Scholes and Nevilles or Rio.
Players on other teams, I don't know, he's there colleague, they wouldn't bash him in the media.
But in the end of the day it is strange nobody is saying it.

It's more than just "dropping" him, we need to build a team without him, we need to move on. The season is properly underway now and we have some big fixtures coming up soon that we can't afford to lose, this really is something we could do without. How do you drop your captain though? And who would even replace him.

He is the cat we all like to kick (myself included), and there is no question he needs to be dropped, but we have much more issues than him alone.

What worries me that so many players look so badly out of form just now, it seems to be a never ending problem for us.

He's the captain, he's already singled out. It's not underperforming anymore too, that's the thing, you can forgive players being out of form. This is the level he is at for the majority of each season now, and it is shite to see.

Have a look at some of his highlights from the game and try and defend it, especially when it's now par from him.

Then there is the shoehorning him in, him always passing backwards or right so Zlatan or LW never get any service, his first touch...

The big problem is that there seems to be a rooney fails video every match. I remember watching the bournemouth and hull (I think it was hull) ones and its obvious this guy is finished

Having a good number 10 is going to be of massive importance if you want to win the league. Swap him for De Bruyne and we would be winning the title imo

Some of the posts in this thread.

fecking hell.

He's one of many players we have who are under performing. To single him out this much is just mind boggling.
He's been performing like this for years now which is the real problem

The worst part about this is that this was totally avoidable.

A good manager, a semi-competent manager prior to this season would have got rid of him and put him out of his misery. He could have done a job at Everton or a team down the league but it's turning to tears now. Club has a lot to answer for.

Someone should do a survey of some kind on other clubs' fan forums to see how many would want Rooney in their team. It might be interesting to see at what level of team the average opinion goes from no to yes. If it does at all, that is.

Absolutely, I hope he does as well. Mhkitaryan is in a different league to Rooney. He can beat players, is fast and has that bit of creativity and magic which Rooney doesn't have. Even Mata is a better number 10 than Rooney.

666 vs 29

People against Rooney are devil worshipers, damn red devils

On his salary he should be the lead man not just one of many players

His salary is kind of irrelevant, irritating as it might be. He was terrible today, but so were many others. We didn't lose just because of Rooney but because we don't have good enough midfield options, Martial is off form and Rashford isn't a winger.

That said, he's clearly unable to raise his game to the point where he deserves to be a regular starter. Either Jose will act or I'm going to start believing he really has got a guaranteed start clause in his contract.

A number 10 is a vital position in an attack, their job is to dictate play, pull the strings and generally make the players around him look better. He hasn't done that for a while, popping up with a few goals and assists or not.

I don't get this, his salary isn't irrelevant in the sense that it's £200,000+ per week that we could be paying to a player who deserves it and would perform much better than him. It's especially true for a club that has always liked to keep a relatively low wages to turnover ratio.

Like I heard on Football Weekly last year it's

Ozil's wages + Alexis Sanchez wages + £30k = Rooney's wages.

That's the best thing I've seen today. That volley is ridiculous. I never thought I'd laugh at such a pathetic display but i did.

No. He's paid like a world class player. He should perform like one

It actually leaves out one of the worst bits, in the second half the ball was played across the ground to Rooney in the centre circle from the right, he tried to let it run past him and turned straight into a Watford player who promptly made off with the ball.

Play Rooney at quarter back according to MOTD!

After all, he does HAVE TO play doesn't he?!
