We were definitely in for Nunez, right? So they do at least seem to be aware we need more firepower up front. If we don’t sign a quality alternative then we’ve messed up yet another transfer window.
Were we seriously in for him? Fair enough if that was the case. I see us being linked to Antony now but he's hardly a 20-goal a season striker either...
Plus: Even if Rashford and Martial find their form again, it would only take 1 or 2 injuries up front and we are down to the bare bone. We simply have to get numbers in for the forward positions.
Yes, he just wanted to play for Liverpool and Klopp especially. It happens, we can't win every battle.

Clearly we've known for a while of the situation, but now that he's supposed to return to training they've leaked he's unhappy.

I guess we haven't found a suitable replacement yet so will play hard ball until then.

I think he knows it will take a while for the club to compete for major honors so he wants to quit. He only came back because he thought we were on the brink of doing so after finishing second.
I really don't mind him going because he's too self centered for the kind of football ETH would like to implement.

Its simply time to part ways. With the new Manager this is the perfect time to do it.

As much as I love Ronaldo he obviously isn't the long term answer for us. Sure he might go somewhere and win the CL but that doesn't mean he's the answer for us.

We will probably take bit more pain next season, cos I don't know who is gonna make up for the goals but for the long term its probably best.

Whats really annoying about it is the timing. I mean he must have known as soon as we weren't in the CL he would go. Then ETH comes out in his first press conference saying how much he's looking forward to working with him, and that he brings goals. Then this. Just shambolic all round.

That’s beside the point anyway. As even if Bruno, Martial and Rashford hit peak form we still needed significant contributions from Cavani and Greenwood to scrape that second place under Ole.
Indeed. By 2+ years I was referring to the season before that when we finished third. Although we scored more overall in the following year, Rashford wasn’t as good (and injured) and Martial was awful. Bruno was arguably less effective also, despite his decent numbers.

Not only is it a long time ago that the ones who remain were banging them in; it was under a completely different system. I’m unequivocally in the “let Ronaldo go” camp, but it’s crazy to think that all our problems upfront will be solved as a result.

To be fair we didn’t scrape second place. It was a comfortable finish for us

If he wants to stay and fight for the team, then that's fine with me. If he doesn't then that's also fine.

We just need to sort it out quickly, and bring in a striker if needed.

Right, we'll just head out to the striker tree in the yard and pluck one right off

If Ronaldo has refused to turn up to team training then what a sh*tty thing to do to lump on the new manager.

I mean, sure we don’t have budget/chance to buy any 25 goal striker this summer (ie Haaland, Nunez, Nkunku), regardless of him staying or leaving, but we could have still bought a decent backup or squad player anyway. We still have 2 months to go for that option.
That's all true but all I meant was this all isnt very professional by him.

True he has always been about himself and his own career. If we are challenging for trophies it’s all good and win-win for everyone, but if we have no chance of winning anything, he will jump ship right away.

Agreed, thanks for a nice chat. :)

Suspect given the timing means he has now found a team (Chelsea?). Let’s face it, he was always going to bolt if a better team with CL came along.

They will be off to Thailand soon and I bet Ronaldo won’t be on that tour. He clearly isn’t up for the fight with the team we have at the moment. Dunno what is going on with his family life, but if his missus doesn’t like Manchester, then he will be off back to sunnier climes, again.

I just hope now that this will be done quickly with him. Tomorrow he must be clear; leaving or staying. If he is leaving, no point having him around team. And we must have time to sign striker

Leave him go.

He rejoined United obviously thinking he'd add to his honour and record haul and is now thinking he can't be arsed with the rebuilding needed here. It's not going to be completed in one pre season transfer window or pre season training.

He's given us some pleasure in the shiit show which was last season but let's be honest, he's part of the problem too.

Do we build a team around him to satisfy his (egotistical) needs or does Ten Hag rebuild United for the long term?

We know the correct answer here?

My boy will get over not seeing him in a red shirt.

Ronaldo scored 24 goals out of 57 around 42% selling your main goal scorer without proper backup is going to hurt Man Utd but if Ronaldo is asked to go before finding an ideal replacement then the questions to be raised on people managing the show at Man Utd

I’m saying scrape because that points total wouldn’t have got us 2nd in any of the five seasons leading up to that one.

Slightly more on topic, our goals scored column in that season was also below par for a 2nd place team.
It was a weird season. We had one week off after the cup final and started incredibly slowly but then had second wrapped up early so there’s a good 10 odd games that you can point to and say we understandably took our foot off the pedal.
I’ve said this a few times but both Manchester clubs dominated that league to a greater extent than the records show imo

Signing for United with £500k per week. Leaving after one season for our rivals Chelsea with a huge pay cut. LEGEND!

Serious question.
The leaks of CR7 leaving hit early in the summer before the most recent batch.

could it be the plan was for him to leave all along but not until we get DeJong on the books?
I ask because now it seems that if the Dejong signing happens we could let Ronaldo go for a more suitable traded replacement.

Poor Ronaldo. His dream was always to play for Chelsea. And to play in CL. He was in fact doing us a favor by playing this year for us.

Losing Ronaldo would make us pretty desperate to get a striker. So if there was really any planning there, we would have signed a striker first.

what if: Bayern and Man United agree to trade..RL for CR.
Imagine it being a win win for both clubs.
I say this of course being a stall until we get Dejong.

And a lose-lose for poor Lewandowski. He'll never go for it.
Maybe not… maybe so. They both have a year on the deal. They could backend his salary to make up for lack of CL and pad it with winning the EL. Highly unlikely but nothing is impossible.

I would guess the reason it's come out more strongly now is because I guess there were no takers before and Ronaldo doesn't necessarily want to go on the preseason tour with a team he doesn't want to play for and is therefore trying to push things forwards. It doesn't appear as if United want to sell (I think they should if he doesn't want to be there) and don't have anything ready in terms of replacements.

But he loves the club. More than anything. It is our fault. We failed him.

Yes, he is only setting the standards here, which is fair. Unlucky that those standards turned out to be to go from second to sixth place, but that's not the goat's fault of course SIIIIUUU.

Free, free, set him free, set him free................

Unpopular opinion maybe, but didn’t Utd as a team score a ton more goals last season than this one? I don’t think anyone will step up and directly replace his 24 goals but I think as a team you’ll make up the difference.

People always bring this up but we had greenwood and a functioning Cavani and also a pretty freaky season in general.

If we had greenwood on the bench rearing to go I doubt anyone would show too much concern.

I actually don't understand the confidence of many on here saying good riddance and all. If we could get a striker in the fair enough but as it stands we have absolutely no one.

We scored 57 goals last season, do you think we will score less now?

He can’t stay if he wants to leave, it will be a complete circus.

Mutual termination on his 500k a week contract would save us in the region of 24m this season, put that towards another player because I can’t see any club paying a fee plus huge wages for him.

If we don't have a striker it's possible. If it weren't for Ronaldo I genuinely think we would be bottom half.

All this talk of Ronaldo consuming others goals is absolute nonesense if you watch the games.

Next season Ronaldo won't be here and we'll see how much Bruno will score.

Him going to Chelsea would work out perfectly. Another year older and and even bigger headache for them than he was for us. You think Lukaku doesn’t work hard enough when the opposition have the ball? Wait til you get a load of this!

If we can get a decent player off them in return (Kante?) then this could be a master stroke. Perfectly timed too, with their yank owner miles out of depth as interim DoF. Exactly the sort of guy who could get dazzled by waffle about shirt sales and social media clicks.
