No we aren't.Juventus didn’t really have any success in doing so. We are in deeper mess than them.

I don't think this is true at all. He wants to play in the CL. He's played in it in every single season of his career and is obsessed by it.
If we had finished 4th but still been miles off the top two he'd stay. The CL is all he cares about and extending his goals record.
I really rather doubt that - he has more money than some of the clubs being mentioned as his next destinationI hate contract rebels. If he was so particular about CL qualification or silverware as a minimum to stay he shd have factored those issues into his contract. I just suspect a lush wad has turned his head.
Yeh I also think maybe he wants to see whether we will spend big this summer to have any chance of turning it around and compete with the likes of City/Liverpool.I reckon it's a bit of both. The fact that we aren't in the Champions League isn't ideal for him (and knowing his ego he probably feels Europa is beneath him), but judging from the timing of this if it's the only reason he would have made some noise as soon as it became clear that we weren't finishing fourth. Given the utter shambles last season he also wanted to see if we're showing ambition in the transfer market and I doubt any of these would come out if we had signed two or three players by now.
If it was all about playing in the Champions League he could have asked to leave when he was buying his kids Easter eggs because we haven't been playing in this seasons CL for LONG time. Why wait until July for it to suddenly dawn on him?
I get the distinct feeling that if 3 new players arrive this week and that includes a couple of decent names we will suddenly see that he is up for the challenge.
Spot on article.Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure will hurt but now Manchester United can move forward | Manchester United | The Guardian
For once, I'm agreeing with Jonathan Wilson.

But having witness all our rivals are progressing better than us in the market this summer, there seems no chance for us turning our fortune any time soon. It’s more likely going to be 3+ years rebuilding project for us and he doesn’t have time for that.
Disapointing if he doesn't turn up for training today.
So you think he'd stay if we bought 2, 3 players already? Did he give the club some kind of deadline?Yeh I also think maybe he wants to see whether we will spend big this summer to have any chance of turning it around and compete with the likes of City/Liverpool.

I think he already wants to leave once we miss out on CL football, it’s quite obvious isn’t it. But I also think part of him wants to see who we are signing before making his final decision. Who knows, let’s say if we have managed to sign Tchouameni, FDJ, Torres, Nkunku/Nunez, Antony etc this summer, he may want to give it another try.So you think he'd stay if we bought 2, 3 players already? Its not about seeing if we'll spend big or not, he wants people to see it that way of course, he just doesnt want to miss out on CL and if that's the case, which is understandable cheers to him.
Not a nice move though if he wont at least talk to the new manager which it seems he wont at the moment.
I really hope this wont turn out to be a circus, him refusing to train until he gets sold or something.
So we should make signings in due time to appease him and hope he'll decide to stay. And even if we do make signings he still might leave. The reason being, although CL football is his priority, he also doesn’t want to leave us winning nothing this term, his ego wouldn’t accept this either. And if we have good chance of turn things around next season with some statement making signings this summer, maybe he won’t mind to stay here for another season.
Cant any believe a 37 year of would act like this just to add 4 odd goals to an already ridiculous CL goal record

I'm glad you repressed the events of 2019
My take on all this is that signing Ronaldo caused problems but also solved them.
We had issues with all our other goalscorers going back to before he joined. His arrival didn’t help them though. It arguably made things more difficult for them but his (intermittent) individual excellence got us a lot of the goals we needed with the other attacking players so badly out of form.
If he leaves we could well see better all round attacking play from the team but we would have lost Cavani and Greenwood from the pre-Ronaldo squad with nobody to replace their goals. Which would obviously leave us in deep shit.
Not really. Of course if we could make these signings as it’s only good thing for us to speed up our rebuild process. But I think we really should prepare earlier for possibility of him leaving this summer, as every man and his dog knows Ronaldo wants to play in CL, and we couldn’t give him that.So we should make signings in due time to appease him and hope he'll decide to stay. Well that's a number 2) actually from your post.No one is saying this, though. Ronaldo wants out because 1) we're not in the Champions League next season and 2) we haven't signed players despite last season's shambles aren't two mutually exclusive things.
I agree about being prepared but on the other side of things Ronaldo should have stated earlier he wants to leave, not 4 days before we go on a preseason tour. The fact we wont be in CL has been a fact for ages. Not to mention if he refuses to train. Not really. Of course we could make these signings as it’s only good thing for us to speed up our rebuild process. Fair assessment. We could, of course, resolve that problem by getting reinforcements in. And if the rumours are true that we knew long time ago that Ronnie would leave without CL football, the question needs to be raised why we aren't even linked to a replacement for him.
Maybe he is also worried the likes of Haaland would catch up his record in 12-15 years. And it's not like Messi will catch up to his record next season.
Sure he could have said it earlier, but we are still 2 months away from closing day of transfer window, and maybe he really want to take his time during holiday to make this decision, while monitoring our process in transfer market. I mean, last season he only notify Juventus days before last day of window, it’s far worst for them.I agree about being prepared but on the other side of things Ronaldo should have stated earlier he wants to leave, not 4 days before we go on a preseason tour. We were definitely in for Nunez, right? So they do at least seem to be aware we need more firepower up front. If we don’t sign a quality alternative then we’ve messed up yet another transfer window.
Lucky us then. In this instance he monitored the situation and then decided he doesnt like it. Or he still may like it. I mean, sure we don’t have budget/chance to buy any 25 goal striker this summer (ie Haaland, Nunez, Nkunku), regardless of him staying or leaving, but we could have still bought a decent backup or squad player anyway. We still have 2 months to go for that option.Lucky us then. In this instance he monitored the situation and then decided he doesnt like it. Or he still may like it. We did. A lot of the more hysterical anti-Ronaldos won’t acknowledge this, and seem to think that the likes of Bruno and Rashford will miraculously return to their goal scoring form of 2+ years ago on his departure. My take on all this is that signing Ronaldo caused problems but also solved them.

Were we seriously in for him? Fair enough if that was the case. I see us being linked to Antony now but he's hardly a 20-goal a season striker either...
Plus: Even if Rashford and Martial find their form again, it would only take 1 or 2 injuries up front and we are down to the bare bone. We simply have to get numbers in for the forward positions.
