Romelu Lukaku vs Alvaro Morata 2017/18

Scary thing is what we were going to spend on Morata. Scouting department needs a proper revamp
It's already been revamped. Mourinho appointed Marcel Bout as head of scouting when he first arrived and Jose brought in a load of scouts that he's worked with in the past. We also brought in Javier Ribalta in the summer from Juventus which was a big move from United.

This signing was United beating Chelsea to Lukaku; so Chelsea went for any decent replacement for Costa. Morata is better than no striker. Chelsea wanted Lukaku over Morata just like United.

You wonder if Batshuayi had been given Morata's minutes though...

I think Batshuayi's possibly a better CF than Morata, or at least, better suited to the PL.

No way

Batshuayi is good in the box and that's it; Morata is better in the box and can also run with the ball.

Batshuayi is not a top striker period; whereas Morata is a top striker with a partner in a specific setup.

Lukaku can be a striker with a partner and by himself at a good level.

People would've laughed if you suggested Vardy was a better CF than Falcao when he turned up in the PL...

There's a difference between being a better footballer and a better striker in a particular league.

I'm not saying flat out that Bat is better CF than Morata, I understand that Morata is a better player with higher pedigree, but if you had given Bat all the minutes Morata has had, in the same team, I reckon overall he would've done at least as well as him this season. Possibly better.

The bolded is what I've been saying for so long. Some people seem to think that a striker needs to be silky with the ball and do fancy dribbles and tricks. And they tie this into some over arching theory about how a team should play football.

However, I think Batshuayi is a step too far; he's too limited in his applications. He reminds be a bit of Hernandez.

I thought the consensus in the caf was that we wet the bed going for lukaku instead of Morata. I guess we know feck all after all
You know there is a reason why we didn't want to pay madrid demand but have no problem paying more with lukaku.
I mean it's benchwarmer vs epl proven , luckily CAF didn't make the decision , madrid cnut want to rip us off using their benchwarmer. He isn't worth more than 50m imo

Trust me if he was playing for us like this, media would have eaten him alive. Lukaku is doing more than fine for us.

Is that the quickest double yellow ever?

Morata when he got his head together after bitching; realised what had actually happened. He couldn't believe it!

Is this fair though? Lukaku did cost us 589m while Morata was a bargain at 56m minus Matic and Costa so negative 20m?

I thought the second yellow was incredibly harsh. Players always have a moan after they get booked and never get a second yellow. If it's a new thing refs consistently do then I've got no problem but I very much doubt it will be.

Morata almost smacked him in the face; which was probably what caused the second yellow.

Quick yellows like that happen often in other leagues; the PL seems to not like giving second yellows even though the laws of the game say they should.

Didn’t really want to bump this thread but, if Morata was struggling here Mourinho would be getting all the blame.

Meanwhile Lukaku gets no credit for his build up and link up play, and neither does Mourinho.

Going to let the mask slip here:

If you need a reliable, 20+ goals a season in the league, Lukaku is your man.

If you need a big game/big moments guy, someone to come up with key contributions and performances at key moments, you go with Morata

Morata has a combination of physical gifts and technical quality to snap scouts jaws. Problem is, he has the football brain of a donkey. He's never going to be reliable as the main man on a big team

Still, in any single game, he can turn into the best go*d*mn striker in the world

It's like this: Lukaku is a solid, reliable 7. Morata is a 5 who sometimes turns into a 10

It's not surprising that Lukaku has been outperforming Morata. It's also not surprising that Morata outperformed him in the H2H. Morata will win chelsea some big games by himself. He will also score less than Lukaku overall

 Don't say that, he is as intelligent as Einstein according to media.

His is the typical case of someone who was so dominant at youth level he never had to learn to play football properly, only his ability doesn't translate enough at the top pro level so he's half the time he looks like a right donkey, the other half he's amazing

Morata the big game player who so far this season has failed to score against Arsenal in 4 different games, failed to score against Tottenham and failed to score against Liverpool.

I find it funny that this lazy Stereotype of Lukaku has been completely killed and the opposite is actually true. Lukaku is a more intelligent player than Morata, and contributes more in the build up play as well.

Morata the big game player who so far this season has failed to score against Arsenal in 4 different games, failed to score against Tottenham and failed to score against Liverpool.

Morata has flopped against big teams. He scored against United because of a fantastic cross and poor marking from United players; in that game Hazard and Fabregas were the ones with the big impact.

Lukaku is slightly better, but still has room for improvement. He was instrumental against Arsenal and Tottenham, but cost us the game vs City.

I was 100% on the Morata train this summer. I still probably prefer him as a player and love his ability to link the play and carry the ball forward. I was giving Lukaku a lot of shit after the City game and I’d never rated him at Everton beyond his goalscoring ability – Was genuinely fearing the worst.

I have to see he’s done nothing but impress me since. Yes the opposition hasn’t been great but he’s really starting to impose himself on games in ways I wasn’t sure he was capable of. Leicester, Stoke and Burnley especially his hold up play and distribution were a serious asset. He’s far better when the ball comes into feet while on the move – The long diagonal has never worked with him and I think we’re finally realising it’s a waste of time.

I think the criticism that came after that City game really got to him. You can see it with his tenacity and work rate – Also the non-celebrations were quite a tell that something was affecting him. Pretty encouraging that he’s responded like this rather than going into a shell. Even if he’s just to be a flat track bully then he’s still a very valuable asset. He’s shown that we can play good football with him up top.

Huge test for him in the next league game though. Opportunity for him to silence a lot of critics, myself included. I think Sanchez will be a huge help given he should take some of the pressure and attention away. If that three of Rom, Martial and Alexis can click then we might be transformed as an attacking force.

Morata's recent form has been nothing if not hilarious.

Isn't the truth is both are good enough for where Utd and Chelsea currently are and both are well short to be a striker for where them clubs want to be.

I reckon it'd be huge news if we dropped Lukaku at any point, let alone in one of our biggest games of the season.

And wonder how he feels. Surely these are the games he signed for.

Except, you know, he’s just coming back from injury and has played like 30 minutes in the last 4-5 weeks.

He's kinda shite, isn't he?

Lukaku is underwhelming too though, but not as shite.

A lot of people on here are obsessed with the idea that the media hates United and loves other teams. Whenever another team does anything, you find countless posts about how it would have been different if it had been United blah blah blah. Give it a rest. The guy had just returned from injury, and Conte was parking the bus, so dropping Morata doesn't mean anything.

I wanted Morata. Haha! Max go feck yourself you utter twat!

Don't understand how Lukaku has been underwhelming, unless, of course, you all cnuts expected Lukaku to score 35 by this stage.
