Trouble is, Costa is a pretty loathed figure and many fans wouldn't welcome him here.

Sure he is, but we always make excuses for players misgivings when they're playing for your club rather than the opposition. I mean its never going to happen, but would seem to suit all parties really.

Like him or not, Costa has goals in him!

Could we sign Lukaku and Morata and look to change formation?

I'd assume Lukaku's team are using us to get Chelsea moving though.

Strikers like Lukaku win big teams league titles by pummeling small sides into submission. The idea that big games arw where titles are won and lost is often mistaken. In those games a team effort is required. That is why I don't buy the idea Lukaku doesnt show up in big games. Its more like Everton does not show up in big games. People forget big games are often where he'd get the best attention from the best defenders. And given that he is known at times for not being involved enough, its no surprise his record would shrink vs big teams. After all Everton are often on the back foot in them games....

I remember one season where we won the title by getting 58 out of 60 possible points from the games against bottom 10 sides. If you consider that most titles are won with 85ish points that leaves you with 27 points(9 wins i 18 games) against better teams.

This is the kind of important statistic that is dismissed in the 'results vs top teams ' threads. It's something SAF was serious about.

As the Summer goes on, I've realized that Rom is actually my fave CF option.

I just really think he'd excel here and become a fan favourite.

And, I know it divides opinion - but for me, at this point (after ADM, Falcao, Depay etc), the 'PL proven' thing is a really big deal.

Just to sign a CF and basically KNOW that they'll bag you 20-30 goals a season, and if they don't, you don't need to philosophize about whether it's them or the set-up - you'll know it's the set-up!

I'm surprised he's not more of a popular option with fans. But anyway, I for one am coming out...

I want Rom, in a United shirt, linking up with Pogba.

Excellent Point.

Yep and our set up is pretty similar to Everton's anyway - we just need a couple of better players in CM / AM to create more chances

If it's between Morata and Lukaku I want Morata. But getting both would be brilliant.

If Utd really want him, and I haven't really been convinced they have until recently, surely they would be using any talks between both clubs re Rooney as a bargaining chip for him. Esp if we agree to cover half or a sizeable portion of Rooney's wages. I still think Lukaku sees Chelsea as his preferred destination, but as Griezmann showed, things can change very quickly in football

Yeah he is good enough to win a big team the league. And also one who will likely flop continuously in Europe. Really don't like his style, though that's something I will easily live with if he performs.

Getting both would be overkill.

No such thing as overkill if it means avoiding the constant 0-0 draws from last season.

I reckon this is just fluff from his camp to get Chelsea to hurry up and pay off Evertons transfer budget for the summer.

I cant imagine we are smart enough to pretend to be in for someone to pressure Madrid in to selling and take our offer before we move on to someone else.

Plus Lukaku and Morata are completely different strikers. They can play together. Morata can come deep or play from the left if required. I doubt we get both, but maybe our interest in Lukaku will force Madrid's hand.

Tbf we do need 2 strikers with the departure of Zlatan and Rooney.

With Lukaku in our lineup it will give us a real physical presence in so many aspects and will improve our ratio of goals from corners, free kicks and provide so much variation in our attacks

Getting two strikers who are aged similar for almost 200m is insane when we have other areas to strengthen. Also we have a 19 year old striker who will get better. All three of them competing for the same position wont sit well with them. No way Morata is coming to United if it means it might be playing as backup. He would rather stay at Madrid and do the same. Same goes for Lukaku.

Indeed. Was Yorke, Cole, Teddy and Ole overkill? Not a chance.
Are we still playing 4-4-2? We were playing 2 strikers a game. Hence we needed two strikers as backup. Common sense. We are in 2017 not 1999.

Would rather have Morata than this guy, yeah I know all about the pl proven, stats for the last few seasons etc, but Morata still has more to his game.

Signing Lukaku (for a fee that would be way higher than the Morata fee btw) would pretty much limit us in style for the foreseeable future, Morata is more flexible and have even been deployed on the wings for lengthy spells.

Besides I just can't get over Lukaku's first touch, it is really bad. I would get annoyed to no end seeing our new £100m striker receive balls with a heavy touch and losing control time after time.

Not to mention it isn't a smart strategy at all. Madrid would gladly keep Morata given the chance, it's us (and to some extent, Morata) who needs to push Madrid into selling. They have a far stronger bargaining position here.

You reckon Morata could play behind Lukaku in the way Sir Alex used Rooney or Yorke. Personally can't see us getting both because I fully expect us to go back in for Griezmann next summer, so signing 2 strikers for big money when one of them will be surplus a season later doesn't seem prudent.

so will we ignore that everyone in the English press were saying we were in for Keane and not Linedlöf?

.

Very very true.

Pretty much. The Lindelof deal was probably sorted ages ago in principle so was probably a case of which one we pulled the trigger on.

It's beyond the realms of possibility that we did exactly what you said the club isn't smart enough to do? Despite the fact, regular forumgoers can think of it? Weird.

And we just forget about Rashford ever being a number 9? Or are we going for the flavour of the month 3-5-2.
No, but we could easily be going for a few decades ago flavour, 4-4-2.

To accommodate Rashford's growing into the game, we might as well need to play two forwards. That was the whole point of bringing Griezmann. We already have Rashford and Martial, who deputized as strikers after Zlatan got injured, we need a different type now, a target men or mobile secondary striker and a poacher. A big name and, unfortunately, an older one more sure to contribute whenever needed. But, looking at the market, we might get none.

Someone just posted a Spanish tweet saying Costa's announcement to Atletico is imminent (despite not being able to play for 6 months?!), so you can't imagine Lukaku won't be announced to Chelsea pretty quickly after.

That'll very sweetly end all this sudden Lukaku to us talk.

We have four competitions to play next season. Rashford, Morata and Lukaku will have plenty of games ahead of them assuming we buy the latter two of course. I don't see why that is something bad. Add Fabinho or Matic as the final piece of the jigsaw and i reckon we will be quite complete

We only play 1 upfront. Don't think it would work spunking out on two strikers. Maybe 1 and a back-up but not 2 who would expect to start and then Rashford as well who was our main striker at the end of last season.

I expect he'll be announced as a Chelsea player before we sign a striker.

On paper it sounds fine, but it doesn't really work like that. With a 1 striker system, you really don't need any more than two strikers, and even the best man-manager would struggle to keep Lukaku and Morata happy with rotating out minutes. Especially considering the price and wages you'll be paying. Look at Zlatan this season - he played 28 of our PL games this season, and only really missed games down to the red card and the injury he picked up at the end.
