Tracing a sh*t transfer rumour
Mediawatch has long since moved past the point where we are shocked by the the depths plumbed by the Daily Telegraph website but this on Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United is worth a linger with several tuts and one eyebrow raised.

They claim: ‘Manchester United want Everton hotshot Romelu Lukaku to solve their goal shortage and will launch a move for the Belgian next month. Reports in Italy say that United want an experienced Premier League striker to assist Anthony Martial leading the attack and Lukaku fits that bill.’

We’re immediately wondering why journalists in Italy would know so much about the business being conducted between two English clubs, but we are trying to keep an open mind.

So what ‘reports in Italy’? A visit to the Daily Star website – for that appears to be the Telegraph’s primary source – reveals that the source of the Lukaku story is Itasportpress. Nope. Us neither.

So off we go to Itasportpress to find a story from Sunday evening, claiming (thanks Google Translate): ‘Black period for Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United. After elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Wolfsburg, yesterday the Red Devils have fallen on the field of the newly-promoted Bournemouth. Results that do not enhance the square, but the Dutchman does not raise the white flag. That’s why in January will make an important intervention in the market. Romelu Lukaku is the number one goal for United.’

And which respected journalist has written this story? That will be the internationally renowned Giovanni Parisio – quite the presence on Twitter with 10 whole followers.

It turns out that Parisio – and indeed Itasportpress as a whole – really do love their Lukaku/Manchester United link.

On Saturday, Parisio wrote: ‘Still burns the elimination from the Champions League at home Manchester United. Louis Van Gaal goes hunting for reinforcements as early as January and is ready to splash out. The Dutchman put under the magnifying glass propia other three objectives: Romelu Lukaku, John Stones and Ryan Bertrand.’

And on Thursday, Marco Carmanello (91 followers), wrote: ‘Out of the Champions League and with the meager tally of 20 goals in 15 Premier League games, Manchester United is looking for a striker weight. According to the Sun, the new name on the notebook van Gaal is to Lukaku, the Belgian striker Everton.’

Ah. The Sun. On December 10. Five days ago. Who needs Henry Winter?

Like with Lewandowski for anyone, Raiola's players will always be short term options for their clubs. 2-3 years and off we go. That's why Everton won't even make more than £10m profit on him, he will force his way out.
I don't think Raiola is any worse than your average football agent. He's got a bad reputation here because of Pogba, I presume, but I'm not sure why that is. The player wanted to leave and has stated multiple times that he doesn't regret that. Ultimately it was to his benefit. Looking at his other high profile clients - Ibra's moves have been largely forced by the circumstances (Calciopoli, Barca didn't want him, Milan needed cash) and he's settled at PSG for some time now. Matuidi has had a few great seasons in a row but he never pushed for a move. Abate as well. Mkhitaryan is having an amazing season and one would think Raiola would take advantage of that and offer him left, right and center but there hasn't been much talk about a move.

I think, at the end of the day, most of the decisions are taken by the players themselves and the agent (including Raiola) is complying with their wishes. At least the really big stars.

We have a few Raiola clients at PSG and not much to complain about. Maybe that he took Matuidi from his former agent and negociated him a good contract.

Everton have just turned down 40 million for John Stones. I will be amazed if we don't make atleast 20 million profit on Lukaku.

20 million profit is probably about the most you can make on him. His agent will make sure of that if there is genuine interest in Lukaku.

Surely if there is a lot of interest from a few different clubs then a bidding war with Lukaku going for a huge fee is more beneficial to the agent who gets a percentage of the transfer fee?

Also people underestimate Kenwrights tightness. He's even a level above Levy.

The guy has had two £30m (might be wrong?) transfers already. I shudder to think of the sort of fee we would have to pay.
And the weird part is that he has managed to justify both fees

Mourinho wanted more experience at that position(in Costa) and look what it got him

He's probably going to be the most expensive player in history when he retires isn't he?

I don't mean in terms of transfer fee, but in terms of cumulative money spent. I think Di Maria's the current record holder, but if Ronaldo gets a big money move this season (or Bale or someone) they'd top him.

Lukaku's already had £60m spent on him and he's 22 you'd imagine he's got two more big money moves in him. Reckon he'll get close to £200m.

I thought I got away with that blunder :( To be fair, I did say I wasn't too sure. I guessed it was about £30m. Still not cheap though!

A lot of money for a player who'd only played in the Belgian league, for sure. When you consider that he was the top scorer in that league two years in a row at the ages of 16 and 17 it makes more sense!

I do rate him highly and defended him on here when he was getting stick for having an indifferent season - he is absolutely one of the best strikers in the world in his age bracket. Still I can't see him here. He's not Martial. While he's a lot more than tank with a bit of pace, he isn't really the the type of centre forward I'd want to see leading the line for us. Would be a fantastic option, but, I don't think he's the sort who'd be happy with not being guaranteed a place in the starting XI.

A Premier League title?
Nobody posed any real threat to City last season. In fact, almost everytime they tried to play any form of attacking football, they got beat. You mean to tell me eh couldn't do that with the players he got rid of??

20 goals in 26 games. He was brilliant during Chelsea's title push. By comparison, Lukaku only got 10 in 36. So I'd say so, yeah.

An additional note, in the hypothetical world that we do sign him, think of the importance it could have in shaping Anthony Martial's career. It's advantages go beyond just the obvious playing ones - his goals.

  • Speak the same language.
  • Personal experience of a big money move at a young age.
  • Professional experience of PL and playing through winter breaks.
  • Young enough to be jovial with.
  • Yet proven enough to look up to and aim to match in terms of end product.
  • And he's an almost perfect central partner in attack for Martial to work off.
  • And he's also got experience of linking up very well with Fellaini at international level.
On top of all of this, Lukaku already has a "friendship" with Memphis too. Or at least an Instagram picture posing version of one at least.

It's increasingly becoming more and more of a no-brainer to the extent that I'm somewhat optimistic we'll even be bidding in January.

Good player but we have already missed the boat by about two years. We should have signed him prior to Everton making his deal permanent.

They will ask for the training ground and the roof for him. Given how much most Premier League clubs aim to extort us in the transfer market, I guess it is safe to just look elsewhere. There are other comparable and more affordable players. After the Fellaini deal, I would hate it for us to fork out for another lump

How many times have you seen him play this season?

Lukaku speaks French?

Maybe you could name a few because I am really struggling to think of any.

Just no....Everton seem have players that just suit them, hes one of them

Would love Lukaku, but if there is even a hint of Jose coming here would either guy want a transfer to happen?

3 at least, as most Belgians are. Dutch, French and English. He probably speaks a little German and Spanish too.
Spanish, Portuguese, and his native language in Ghana apparently. Andreas Pereira speaks the same five minus the Ghana one. Do they not learn German in Belgium? Bit odd them knowing Spanish but not German.

It's quite regional. A lot of people in Brussels don't even speak Dutch, and Flemish guys I knew couldn't speak French. A lot of them were a lot more fluent in English than the other out of French/Flemish.

Thanks, I guess if they don't plan on leaving the region then they don't really need to know the other. Footballers must just learn them all to give them the options of playing in different countries. Its fascinating how many people can speak different languages than each other living in such a small area.

Think he'll be the first to admit he went to Chelsea too soon, he or rather his agent are always claiming Everton is a stop-gap team.

Lukaku: "I never got the chance to say it but I would say thank you to Jose Mourinho."

"I had one conversation with him a few days before I left and I told him I wanted to go and I think he saw in my eyes that I really needed to play because it was the year of the World Cup. He was the one who gave me the green light to go."

(Couple of days ago)

He doesn't want to stay at Everton... I remember reading a few articles where he admitted that Everton was just a stepping stone -- a chance to put himself in the shop window for a bigger club. He could probably be bought, but it would cost at least 40m. Not sure he's worth it, but it ain't my money.
