I'm not surprised at signing Lukaku. Fellaini was a useful asset last season due to his physicality, add that upfront to someone with good pace and a great goalscoring record and it's a good bit of business. The good thing also is that it's the season leading up to the World Cup and Belgium have a fee great strikers so Romelu will have to be scoring to start at the World Cup.

Does he take penalties? Wondering if he would take over that responsibility for us with Ibra and apparently Rooney gone.

Now get James Rodriquez to do the hoofing. Atleast he does it accurately otherwise it's going to be a full season long painful football.
You watch us right? Pogba,Mata,Herrera all have good delivery, pretty sure we will sign a wideman too so that will help. Luke shaw if fit and in form can be a great crosser, valencia is also decent enough. Last year we created loads of chances, We couldnt finish them. This year i feel we cant be unlucky and we will see many more goals and chances converted.

I'll let Pogba to do it though and also to add his number of goals as well. I have watched Lukaku's penalty and not very consistent. De Gea saved one of them as well.

He shouldn't. Still remember that penalty miss in LVG 2nd season in FA Cup tie. Let's Pogba take it. Pognalty is cool

Its like people haven't watched him at all. He's good in the air but that doesn't mean he is a hoof ball player, he has pace, strength and a cannon of a left foot. He'll be excellent with the ball at his feet. He's left defenders for dead with a simple shoulder drop or shifting the ball onto his left foot and accelerating away.

If I remember correctly he also missed a penalty vs Bayern in the super cup for Chelsea. Which was right before Jose sold him.

It seems as though him and Baines split the responsibility of penalties whilst Lukaku was at Everton. As others have mentioned I remember him missing a couple of important spot kicks. I always prefer the team's striker / main source of goals to take them to build confidence.

Shaw has never ever been a great crosser. The guy barely has 3 assists as a full back in his whole career.

Is the last 10m in regards to us paying out Rooney's contract or making up some kind of difference for him accepting lower salary?
The article trying to be a smartarse. The legend is that we were looking for 10m for Rooney (only a Chinese club would have actually payed money for Rooney, considering that they also have to pay him all that salary), but we decided to drop it for Everton. So, in order to make the transfer look that it cost more, they added that 10m to the price of Lukaku.

I think that having Rooney out of the books - without paying any of his wages - is a bonus for us. If he had another 2 years on his contract, with his 300k/week wages, we are actually saving 30m pounds there.

I am not convinced about Lukaku long-term tbh; he fits a specific system i.e a system that plays to his strengths. Unless Mourinho stays for 10years, imagine if our next manager is a Klopp Guardiola type of manager(there are more klopp type managers than mourinho type), it will be another Sturridge situation but this time, a 75m problem; and unless the manager adjusts his system to fit lukaku(which is unlikely), then we have a big problem. That is why i would prefer Morata because his all-round play is great and he will easily fit into any system. Maybe i'm being paranoid, but feel free to quote me.

I see your point, Morata does seem like a player that can fit into different systems.

But wherever Lukaku has played as the main striker he has scored goals and been relevant regardless of who the manager was - Steve Clarke, Roberto Martinez or Koeman, all of whom have differing styles and philosophies.

I do understand where you're coming from, but IMO the facts don't support your statements.

This is a bit off topic but I can't find a more relevant thread that's open. The connection is it pertains to Chelsea challenging us for Lukaku but needing to offload Costa first. I just read in the Guardian that Athletico are putting together a bid for Costa, which would allow Chelsea to act. My question is, how come Athletico can do that? If they still have a window available why did the Griezmann deal fall through? Genuinely confused.

He does when Baines doesn't play. Keep Pogba on them he's not missed one yet I don't think.

He's missed some big ones so I would rather someone else take them.

Should sign Fabinho. He is a penalty expert like milner or baines.

They can sign Costa now but he's not allowed to join/play for them until January. Just like Barcelona did with Arda Turan two years ago.

They can not register new players.

I think they can buy players but that the players cannot play until the new year.

Does nothing at international level, hasn't shown outstanding class across opponents in the league, has zero champions league pedigree. Sound logic indeed.

Players like this come in as supplementary to bona fide world class. If they don't make the step up then, it's not the end of the world.

If he's our lead-the-line-forward, he will have to make an enormous leap in performance and mental strength. Can he do that? Perhaps. But it's a £75m bet and that's unsettling.

He's actually scored 20 goals for Belgium, and was fourth and second top scorer in the league in the last two seasons.

What are you talking about? The guy's the second highest scorer in the league. Has been banging them in consistently for 3 years at least and is proven for Belgium. But he does not have the mental strength?!

On the other hand, you would cream yourself over Kane who has done similar to Lukaku. I don't get it.

Eden Hazard plays in the same team and does nothing at international level as well.

Hang on....

And?

Hazard has a lot to prove himself in the cl and internationally. But he has the talent where it won't be a surprise if he makes the leap in a breakout season.

@Fortitude I'm sorry but you're not making much sense with the above.

Lukaku isn't an exciting signing for me but he is guaranteed goals. The price isn't bad either. Not sure what's not to like with this deal bar it not being a continental based flair player.

He has a lot of goals in the league, too. Doing something at international level is looking like a star when it's time to step up.

He's young, so obviously it would be unfair to dismiss him in that regard, but he doesn't ooze the kindof class where one think he's a sure thing to enter the elite tier of striker. More power to him if he does.

He is not proven for Belgium, see above. The pl goals are not the barometer for excellence. It means he's a good premier league striker. Great. Can he go up the levels required or are you saying the product that he is is satisfactory for the outlay?

Mental strength is being the man when the pressure is truly on. Lukaku hasn't shown that.

And you might want to see my posts about Kane before leaping to conclusions.

Middle paragraph is great. Exactly what would make him a great signing. Problem is, he doesn't have their technical brilliance where you look at him and think it's only a matter of time.

Last paragraph ties into what I said above; 75m for a good pl striker, ok. Might be the going rate in these crazy times. Why not too that cash with some more and go after the elite talent?
Eden Hazard hasn't done much of note for Belgium too. Nor has Griezmann been setting the world on fire for France but they are elite players. Lukaku is younger than both and has ample scope for improvement.

As for your last line, which "elite talent" would you think is available who would be going for a reasonable price? We were about to break the bank on Morata so Lukaku is a great option too.

Frankly I have not been overly impressed by his technique but he sure knows to bang them in. Plus at this age he can be improved and can become a lethal player in his prime.

That's being rather polite. He's having a fecking mare.

Just seen the pics on BBC of Pogba and Lukaku training together in LA. Any other reason (commercial etc.) that they would be training together? Or can the ***-fest begin?

We're horrendous from corners last season. Pogba's the only one I rate interms of delivery and he doesn't take corners or free kicks. We've got loads of 6ft+ players so a set piece specialist would serve us well.

I have a great feeling about Lukaku.

I believe this move will make him concentrate 100% and really show his fully ability. He's going to train harder than ever before, especially keeping up with Pogba.

He's always had top ability but looked a frustrated figure at times, with us giving him the ball more often I can see him scoring bundles.

They're friends and were on holiday together anyway?

They are both good mates and good athletes, so could just be helping eachother keep in shape for the upcoming season.

But it is obviously happening and i would be very surprised if the deal fell through.

The amount of people that have asked this same question in one thread genuinely confuses me.

In the 95/96 season when Shearer scored 31 goals in 35 matches :

Against the 7 worst sides - he scored 15 goals
Bolton (20) . 3 goals
QPR (19) - 2 goals
Man C (18) - 2 goals
Soton (17) 1 goal
Coventry (16) - 3 goals
Sheffield W (15) - 2 goals
Wimbledon (14) - 2 goals

Against the top 6 sides - he scored 2 (1 against us and 1 against Villa)

So does that mean that Shearer was useless and only scared against poor sides ?

And I don't mean it as a criticism against your post - but a few other before you who claimed he only scored against poor sides

I said months ago that flat track bullies win you leagues and hence laid my hat down for Lukaku.

Just because his show reel isn't all flicks, step overs and tricks doesn't mean he is a bad player. I'm sure Shearer or Cole's highlights would just be then smashing the ball past the keeper and reeling away.
