What fee they were expecting btw? You can't get a more PL proven striker than Lukaku at this rate.

Yeah, it only looks high because we've had very few £75m transfers in football but that's only because very few clubs can afford to spend that kind of money so players who are worth that usually end up running their contract down to the final year and going for less or sticking around for a longer time.

When you see random PL players going for £15m - £20m, and Benteke costs £28m, you cannot really complain about paying premium for a premium player.

£80 million... ridiculous money when you think about it Morata might be frustrated about us dropping interest but he only has Madrid to blame for that.

I feel for him tbh. I'm sure he wants to leave and become a starter but he has to pay for the greed of his club.

Way more happy with this than Morata. A proven goalscorer... which is what we need.

He already has paid he never wanted to return from Juventus but Real Madrid made him and wanted an arm and a leg from Juventus knowing they couldnt afford it.

Better for us to avoid negotiating anything with Madrid in the future after what happened in this Morata saga.

How did I defend him ?! I said earlier here that I'm not 100% convinced of him at some points, but taking how many goals he scored against bottom half isn't something to downplay a striker, you can downplay him for his build up or first touch or being limited technically, sure, but scoring against bottom half ? Any striker will have his most goals each season scored against bottom half, in any league in the world. I proved this to you.

A great striker scores against nearly every team in the league. That's the point. His record overall.

When it comes down to it, avoiding defeat against your closest rivals could be the difference between losing out on the title on GD or 3 points.

Liverpool take it to a different extreme; they destroy the big teams and feck up against the weaker teams.

It's all about balance. We might beat the bottom 10 team more regularly with Lukaku, but we might also perform poorly in the big games.

We need a balance between the two. Nobody knows how this will work out. I think there's a 50/50 chance between success and failure for him.

Looks like this 1 still has legs in it then.

We will no doubt he desperately pushing to get the deal concluded by the weekend, maybe that's why we leaked it now? It will hurry along Everton's decision especially if Chelsea are dithering.

I would much prefer Morata as I think this 'physicality first' approach that we're adopting is flawed and limited. He's a good goal scorer but he's not an elite footballer.
And Morata is an elite footballer? What the feck has he done in his career? This post from a redditor named /u/mikeest is perfect to describe the situation:

"Anyone thinking rationally would agree, but there's some weird backlash against him. Lukaku is younger, more physically gifted, has been playing longer at the top level, has scored at least 10 league goals in 5 consecutive PL seasons, scored 25 league goals last season, all while never having the benefit of playing for a top team. At the age of 19/20 he scored 17 league goals playing for West Brom. I have no idea what the argument for Morata would be, especially since they're around the same price. This is also ignoring that Lukaku's integrated into English culture, and fluent in multiple languages. Morata has not had a single exceptional season."

I have been away and so havent been posting, but all I have to say is

please god no.

Lukaku isnt a bad player or a terrible person, but really not what I would like at united

It's funny you're saying that regarding our failure in the league in the last season was because of the shite load of draws against bottom half in the league at OT. If we had won 7 out of these 15 draws we would have been top 3 at least even with our mediocre results against top 6.

Anyway, I didn't say he shouldn't score against top 6. I said any striker in any league will have most of his goals against bottom half and midtable clubs. I think I made this point clear.

You're right.

The last thing we need is a striker who scores loads of goals. Nightmare.

Those last couple of tweets are promising, if Chelsea are willing to up us by £5M we can go back for Morata who'd be £1M less.

It's easy to forget that Mourinho does actually coach these players.

Lukaku will be in the same boat as Pogba, whereby there's a certain level of expectation but then he's also got a lot of potential too. There's no doubt Jose will improve certain aspects of his play. If he can replicate his return from last season I'd be more than happy.

I'm actually laughing at how apparently Lukaku was first choice and this transfer has been in the works for months and this guy is like "nah Mino just phoned Woody up this morning and he was like yeah ok I'll take Lukaku for 75m, who's gonna tell all the press?"

If Pogba continues to improve with us over the next few years you can bet they'll give it a try to tempt him away but I wholeheartedly agree avoid them like the plague.

This form the Guardian 'story':

The confidence at Old Trafford is such that sources have indicated the player, who is currently on holiday in Los Angeles, could be signed in time to join up with his new team-mates as they continue their pre-season in the United States.

So he's going to fly back from Los Angeles, sign the contract and be on a plane back to The States on Sunday. I don't think so.

It doe say "Continue their pre-season" I suppose.

Yeah his record considering he's been in a mostly unsettled Everton side plus spells at Wigan is impressive it has to be said.

He's been in my fantasy team for the last 3 years because he's guaranteed to score at least every other week. That's something United have been missing for years now.
He's a bit streaky in that regard, but so are most strikers to be fair. Only striker that fits the bolded description is Costa (when he's not acting up) imo.

Think we can arrange signing the contract abroad like teams do with medicals.

We'll ask for about 200-250m if this happen. They'll be smart enough to know where the door is and leave.

Could have a medical in Los Angeles.

If not Pogba is there too, will he have to fly back for training on Saturday?

Because one season is a way to prove your point. Okay mate. I already knew that Alexis is also a flat track bully.

Kane and Agüero have better records against the big sides overall. I think it might be Damien who posted a graphic of all the top striker' records overall.
To be fair, Aguero is a bit of a freak in that regard. He's always had a ridiculous record against top teams.

Other than him and maybe Drogba, it's normal for strikers to get the majority of their goals against lower teams and only a few against the top teams.

I doubt we bid for Lukaku if we weren't sure he wants to join us. The whole 'best buds with Pogba' thing makes me pretty confident.

I suppose Lukaku might have used us in order to flush out Chelsea's interest but that seems a tad far fetched.

I used to think this guy was alright, but he's once again proven to be another ITK bellend. We've been in negotiations with Lukaku for weeks and this fella knew nothing about it. Funny how he always comes out and pretends to know the finer details of our transfers AFTER something has happened.

If we become competitive again I feel Pogba is a lifer here, don't get that Spain vibe off him.

Raiola will use it in negotiations though, that much is certain.
