this is some weird analysis. Even Jamie Bloody Carragher is talking about how United looked like a team that was playing with only ten men because the one player tasked with linking the midfield with the front two (Mkhiyatran or whatever his name is) was so poor it looked like United were playing with ten men. Swap Mkhiytran for Harzard and vice versa and your "modern" striker (Morata) would be dreadful too (funny enough Lukaku does just fine playing with Harzard for the Belgian national team). But back to your modern forward theory, Lewndoski and Costa are the best target men in the world, yet they are playing really well, today, for top clubs. Why? Simples, they get good service.

Lewandowski has more to his all around game than Lukaku. It's like a different level.

How is he going to improve his hold up play without improving his technique? It's very rare that you see 24+ year old players suddenly getting a great touch and technique. You either have it or you don't.

I don't think anybody is expecting him to suddenly develop "great" technique.

I blame the complete lack of creativity behind him, useless counter attacks and the negative football far more than him. Must be so frustrating playing up front these last bunch of games.

The funny thing is, he would be a great plan B striker, but he left us in the first place because he wasn't having that.

I have always got a bit of the Mario Gomez vibe with Rom in the sense he guarantee's goals but he will still never be enough for a club with lofty ambitions, even if he averaged 1 a game (like Gomez did the season before Heynkes benched him). Wouldn't surprise me if he hits 30 plus goals for the next 3 season's but your manager still searches for an upgrade.

But you do expect him to get up to a decent level somehow?

Yeah I do. Big difference from becoming great.

A big chunk of this is just desire. If he was willing to be more physical it would make a big difference.

Would anybody advocate that he be dropped, and have a partnership of Martial and Rashford?

They haven't played together that much, but when they have they seem to have a decent understanding of each other.

I'm a fan of Lukaka BTW, just thinking maybe try something different.

Only if we play 3-5-2. And even then you have Young and Valencia as WBs.
In any case we desperately need a winger.

We certainly do. Old school type, get the crosses in.

Although for the time being i wouldn't mind seeing Matic as DM, Miki (i know he's in bad form) on the right and Herrera on the left of a 3 man midfield, with Mata in the No.10 and Martial and Rashford up front. Could work.

To be honest, always preferred Morata over Lukaku, as for me the base level of Lukaku's technique, hold up play and link up play is too low to improve upon to reach World Class level.
But, it has to be said, the way we have been playing, especially in the midfield, you could have the World's best striker up front and he wouldn't fare much better than Romelu.
Absolutely no composure on the ball, plethora of misplaced passes, no coherent and intricate link up play and loads and loads of inaccurate hoofballs from the likes of Valencia, Young etc. The manager has to be at least partly responsible for this. The players look afraid to commit themselves forward, to break organisation, to sit very deep. This is on the manger more than the players. If you chose to play limited players, your plan will be hindered by the player's limitations.
Also, Mkhi behind Lukaku without proper support is a recipe for disaster. Jose is too stubborn to try the likes of Mata or Martial instead of Mkhi.

Herrera and Mickhi on the left. That's narrow as can be. Plus that Mickhi on the right is useless. He's generally useless nowadays.

If my mathematics are good that's 4 in the middle not 3 :)

Well i don't count Mata as part of the midfeild per se, he's more in the attacking end is what i meant. So it is a 3 man midfield, really.

When Pogba comes back i would replace Herrera with him. I don't like Miki on the right up front, but in midfield i think he would do ok - especially with Pogba next to him.

It is narrow, but as you alluded to earlier, we don't have any natural wingers anyway. Also, Martial and Rashford would stretch the defense naturally IMO. It's just something i'd like to see.

Can someone please explain to me why Lukaku at age 26 already looks like he is in need of rest? Previous season Zlatan aged 35 looked less fatigued at this stage of the season.

For a second you got me, but he will be only 25 come spring.

Zlatan is an athletic freak of nature. Most footballers won't compare to him, even at 35.

Tbf, I'm sure Zlatan doesn't cover the same distance as Lukaku during 90 minutes - although I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I'm not sure Lukaku looks like he needs a rest but anyways, he puts himself about a lot more than Ibra especially in the frequency and intensity of the runs he makes. Also, Ibra is an absolute freak physically, his 35 isn't the normal 35.

He badly needs a goal or two to lift his head again. Our next few games are the type in which Jose had better take off the shackles and let us attack, so hopefully Rom can grab a couple of goals.

He's also much leaner than Lukaku. That extra bulk has its uses but it will fatigue you more quickly.

First one was a great touch

Joking. Good he's back on the goal trail. Bring it back to Manchester as well.

he is a good striker when there is a competent creative line behind him..unlike what we pass of as creativity currently.

Don't have a gif but it was a lovely finish.

First goal was a great first touch/one touch goal.LOL

Second goal was a lovely finish as well.

He was very good for Belgium today, especially during the second half. He had a foot in every belgian goals, created chances for others, dribbled very well and linked well with his mates. Let's hope he will keep going with united after the break.

Great to see him proving many of our fans wrong. Create chances for him and he'll score, that's exactly what Belgium do. He's not knackered nor is he out of form, United haven't been playing to his strengths for the last few games.

Goal is a goal, especially in terms of stats, but come on. The first goal was nothing more than a heavy touch (albeit under pressure) that ended up in the net, you see him instantly trying to rectify it. Screw it though, I’d take 30 of those every season
