Gary Neville was setting the agenda on him before the game. Did the same thing with Pogba last year, De Gea previously. It's quite sad.

Other than his chance that he should have finished, can't really fault him today. Dealing with pretty much nonexistent service all game.

Neville has become an embarrassment. He bends over backwards so much not to come across as pro-United that he's now anti-United in his punditry and commentary.

Pretty obnoxious.

Can't blame Lukaku for his overall performance. Just two instances where he could done been better. One is the chance obviously. The other is when Firmino was played onside because he was too slow in moving up the pitch. Our tactics was such that he was completely isolated and hardly touched the ball.

Crowded out and zero service provided. He was feeding off clearances and misplaced passes.

Can't fault him really. He's not a Tevez or a Rooney, which is the impression Neville seems to have of him. He'll get better as the season progresses. I have full confidence in him being top scorer this season.

He should also stop running with the ball, it hurts my eyes but that would also ask of his teammates to get closer to him and time and again they left him isolated.

He could score against Real Madrid not so long ago and City last season. Distribution and movement in United have to be properly calibrated for that kind of striker.

Pogba, Carrick & Zlatan returning should add some creativity... If that's not enough, there's always winter window.

will get flack for saying this but lukaku again showing the small frustration I have with him in that he seems to need many chances in a game to score a goal, he doesn't seem to be one of those classic prolific goalscorers that could not have a kick all game but given just one chance in a match and they would 9/10 times score

He didn't do much today to help the criticism that he's not the most intelligent player. Every run/movement I saw was completely vertical and his hold up play wasn't great, he misjudged a lot of headers. He got no service whatsoever but he didn't contribute much at all.

The complaints about his all round performance, for me, are akin to hearing that De Gea isn’t creative enough and doesn’t have good enough all round play.

He’s an all out striker who we employ to score goals. Simple as that.

Shoulld have buried his chance in the corner than at the centre of the goal for him to save. You dont get much chances in tight games.

He has been shooting straight at the keeper since preseason. this time he dint get the second chance.

You've been called out on Twitter

Not that simple though is it? There is more to be being a great striker than goals.

That's pretty pathetic, instead of discussing it on the forum and giving the poster a chance to respond the person just tries to ridicule it on twitter where no one will respond.

The person should be found and banned.

Not when you aren't seeing any of the ball whatsoever. What was he supposed to do? Go into midfield and disturb the flow like what Rooney does??? Anyone who is pointing fingers at Lukaku needs to start watching netball instead.

Most of the balls that he received were Arial balls from De Gea. I know Lukaku is one of the best players in air but even he can't perform miracles. So I'm not sure where people are coming from with this criticism about his hold up play. Add to that when he did get the ball there were hardly any players around him. It's as if United were playing with ten men and just throwing balls at him hoping for the best. Same goes for his runs and the silly nonsense about his "intelligence". It's difficult to make any meaningful runs when your midfield is not doing anything to exploit the channels around you.

Make more and better runs into dangerous areas. He was too static and content to stay in the middle today.

Movement for a start, run the channels, basics. Lukaku has this reputation of being a little lazy when he is not involved in the game. Felt like that today, TV does not give you the best angles to judge a players movement but from what I could see he was too stationary. It is a thankless task for a striker in that type of match, but it is not the chance that concerns me, can not take every one.

I lost count of the number of times he came too far towards the ball and it went straight over him.

Come on mate. He was getting absolutely no service. Zero. Zilch. What runs was he gonna make when the midfield was doing nothing. Funny enough he had a great game against Real Madrid where his movement was fine. And that's because Pogba and Matic were doing a better job of utilizing the little possession we had. Honestly Herrera and Mkhitaryan should get all the blame for our Frontline being so ineffective. I have never seen such an inept midfield performance in a game of this magnitude. Mkhitaryan especially needs to leave the club. He's useless.

I think he missed pogba for a game like today. Apart from matic putting one in the channel for him a lot of balls to him were slow or aimless. He was often isolated

There were chances to play him into space and our players muffed it or put it out of play

This. You're spot on mate. Funny enough his performance today was no different to Zlatan's performance at Anfield last season. This mentality of wanting players to "get in" by running all over the place like a headless chicken such as Wayne Rooney in his last days here gets us nowhere.

Are you saying that, as a striker, he couldn't or shouldn't do better?

I hope this isn't based just on this game cause it's ridiculous tbh.

I found it puzzling each time he misses a chance I see some people claiming he's not clinical enough.

By this logic Ronaldo is a shite finisher :

And Lewa is absolute fraud :

People need to accept these misses happen. If I can fault Lukaku for anything today it'll be him not a good enough target for our long balls as Fellaini.

Was watching PSG this afternoon and Mbappe missed like 3 sitters today alone, and against a shitty Angers side ! it's perfectly normal.

Edit: Messi just missed an excellent chances to level against A.Madrid !

Exactly.

We can bring plenty of strange misses to world's deadliest strikers. These things always happen.

Unfortunately he was really isolated today so couldn't do too much. At the same time probably didn't play the best he could.

When that opportunity came for him I had a feeling he'd miss. Everyone seems to be on the Lukaku bandwagon but imo he's been scoring some "easy" goals and have fluffed some where it was more difficult. I remember maybe it was the last game or the few games before where he created a great opportunity for himself and choked it at the end, today was basically the same.

Is it too much to expect for us to have an option off the bench for when Lukaku's having a stinker?

I guess it's one position that Jose gives a free pass too; he certainly did with Zlatlan. The red flag appeared when he first announced he couldn't rotate the position until Zlatlans return. How does he go into a season believing he's only got one striker for 6 months? And just why won't he play Rashford or Martial up there, they couldn't have been any worst today.

Telling your main goal scorer he's undroppable and expecting him to play every minute is just creating your own problems.

Neville was a twat today, Lukaku had no idea where the hell he was when that heal his Lovren.

I think the goal keeper does well to be fair. Comes out quick, makes himself fairly big. Ultimately though it's a poor finish, has to keep it low but he's just lashed at it. Lovely build up play though.

It was tough for him today absolutely but I've got to be honest, I was disappointed with him and think his limitations were exposed somewhat. We weren't really able to commit bodies forward from central positions and he was clearly isolated.

I do think though that there's a time and a place though when strikers need to come to the ball. Liverpool outnumbered us in midfield and we found it difficult to play through them but I'd have liked to have seen him come short so we had another body to take the ball off Matic and Herrera. Then we could've got Martial/Rashford in behind and stretched them a bit without having to rely on counter attacks. I understand though that that's not his game.

Should have buried that chance.

Hard to do much in the game though when he got zero service. He needs service to thrive.
