All of you have different issues with something which shouldn't sound so strange, yet it does. Why is it acceptable that footballers should not be responsible for their performances? So strange

Because football is not like your daily job. Player performance depends on how the player is used and what kind of tactics are used.

They are though. If they play shit for a prolonged period of time then they get dropped and sold. You would have the same fate if you perform below average for a while at your workplace i.e demotion/fired.

Except Lukaku regularly outpaces opposing players in a foot race???

Yeah for me his issues have very little to do with any potential loss in pace.

You're a single point ahead of us having had a ridiculously easy start to the season and a piss easy CL group.

Are we still talking about this. You act as if we started the season by playing in Scottish league. Every team has played 20 games so we have played teh same opponents that you have played and not once you have been above this season. The fact remains we have been having a better season than you lot so far.

He’s absolutely rapid, there’s no issue with his pace. His poor control of the ball, apparent lack of strength and mental fortitude do appear to be an issue however.

That fat cnut would know all about bulking up. How the hell does he get paid to write this shit?

No question about his pace. He comfortably outpaces his defenders everytime i see it. More about control and composure to place the ball on either side of the goal.

One thing I don't like atm is his lack of work rate. He's jogging around and tbh looks like he couldn't be bothered. Unless his fitness isn't the best and Mourinho wants him to conserve his energy (very unlikely) but he should be running around putting pressure on opposition defenders, closing them down and jumping aggressively to win headers none of which he seems to be doing. I thought he was particularly poor against Burnley. Chasing goals with lots of possession in our final third and he wasn't anywhere near the action. Very worrying.

He really needs to work on defending set pieces, he's gifted teams two or three goals this season.

Bulking up would not effect his straight line speed over distance but those first few steps, reaction times, agility, absolutely could hurt in those areas. Playing against teams who will sit deep with the space compressed, fewer opportunities to play on the last man, need to be on to passes/breaking balls in a flash.

I thought Depay did not help himself at all by bulking up, noticeably got much bigger very early on his Utd career, lost some explosiveness and dexterity when running with the ball, big and powerful but a bit stiff. Lukaku should consider slimming down, if nothing else just to explore what weight fits his game the best. Not playing at Everton now where teams come out against them and leave space for him to run into.

I think the main issue with Lukaku is that he is a great athlete but a very average footballer. He's basically the inverse Juan Mata.

His acceleration could be better but I don't think he's any better or worse now than he's always been. We're just refusing to play to his strengths.

I disagree. Lukaku needs to slim down and run faster.

His first season feels like Rooney in his 7th season.

It's not straight line speed that being half a stone lighter will improve, it's his turning, leaping and response time that should be a split second quicker.

United are comfortably in 2nd largely because of Lukaku.

If he was to have a spell out injured, it would remind everyone of the last few seasons struggling to even get into the top 4.

We aren't comfortably in second. We're only a point ahead of Chelsea. It looks more likely we'll soon be third.

Jose Mourinho said Romelu Lukaku’s form has suffered because he is exhausted – but claimed he cannot afford to rest him.

Quote from pre match presser:

"The boy is tired. He’s physically a monster, but not a machine, and he’s feeling it.
First of all, people doesn’t have to be grateful to Romelu, I have to be, not you, not the supporters, not the pundits
I have to be, and the other day I said 19 matches in the Premier League, now I say 20 matches in the Premier League, playing 90 minutes, I think for a striker, any player, he’s absolutely incredible."

He's tired? Boy if only we had a Rashford or Martial to play up top instead.

I don't really want to criticise Jose but this is a bit like saying I'm bored of eating toast every morning yet doing it despite having a lovely box of Frosties sitting right there.

So rest him then Jose. He’s made his mind up it seems that only he or Zlatan can play striker.

Give him a break and play Rashford or Martial up front.

Why play him when he is physically tired , it will just reduce his Performance level. Rotate him with zlatan

I agree that Lukaku needs to lose some weight, but not because of overall pace, rather more to do with better acceleration and balance on or off the ball, which he severely lacks at the moment.

Been saying we've been overplaying him for a while now. I still don't understand why Jose thinks he has no choice but to keep playing him. Why not at least take him off on 60 or 70 minutes when we're leading?

Sure we have been hanging on at 60 mins of late.

Lately, this is true. I remember the Newcastle game - 4-1 up with 20 minutes to go, perfect time to get him off but we chose to take off Martial for Zlatan instead.

I agree there were plenty of times earlier in the season to give him a rest.
However I don't buy that fatigue is the main issue at the moment.

Yeah kinda funny to complain about him being tired but it being your choice to never rest him. Not like we have Martial or rashford there who are both better as a striker anyway.
