Yeah imagine a striker who misses the odd chance.
He misses quite a lot more than the odd chance, to be fair. He has scored quite a few, but if we're going to criticize Zlatan's performance last year for missing too many chances, despite scoring 28, Lukaku has to be held to the same standards, if not higher, considering his price tag.

People criticising Zlatan last year were idiots. He was excellent last season - one of the few players who performed well during the season.

Price tag means nothing. Players shouldn't be judged on how much they cost, the club should.

Did well for the goal but thought he was pretty poor apart from that, clumsy challenge on Ake too which looked nasty.

No there isn’t. That’s the tired old stat about him scoring much less frequently against top teams than against crap teams. Newsflash: all strikers score much more often against crap teams. Put it another way, can you name four PL strikers with a better record than him in terms of scoring rate against top 6 sides?

As an aside, the bold bit in my post you quoted had nothing to do with goal-scoring.

Goals against current top 6 since 2014/15 - this is before this season started and I copied this from a post I made in a watsapp group with United fan friends of mine at the time.

Players goals/games
Aguero 19/27
Vardy 15/33
Kane 14/26
Mane 13/31
Sigurdsson 12/35
Hazard 11/29
Giroud 10/26
Benteke 9/28
Naistmith 8/18
Wijnaldum 8/21
Sahko 8/20
Costa 7/21
Walters 6/23
Crouch 5/20
Rooney 5/20
Ozil 5/24
Josh King 5/24
Lukaku 5/35

Up to you to decide which ones are strikers as some are just attackers

Think he's been one of our better players even without the goal. Been very involved (which everyone wants/moans about). His passing has been poor though (refuses to keep it simple though).

I'm glad for him that he got his goal because other than that, he's been absolutely horrific.

Flat track bully after all. :D

He seems to be the EPL version of Higuain, to some extent.

Nothing out of the ordinary here. He scores a goal but doesn't do enough in terms of hold up play or playing combinations with his team mates. He's like the opposite version of Welbeck.

Lukaku makes you appreciate how good Ruud's link up play was. He's not great with the ball at his feet is he?

Ah well I couldn't give two shits as long as he's banging them in!

The problem with Lukaku is, if he's not scoring. He doesn't offer too much else. I know Jose talks about his movement. But I don't see us utilising that space around him.

I'll wait till the end of the season. But worrying so far. Hopefully he pulls it together.

The only way he seems to score if it's put on a platter for him inside the 6 yard box or if there's a decent cross. He might be one of the best headers of the ball but really might be tired as he doesn't seem to provide an outlet to hold the ball, win the ball, or create chances.

We need him to fire on all cylinders this month and for the rest of the season if we want to have any hope of catching City and going far in the champions league.

As long as he keep banging winning goals like this one, can't be arsed about other aspects that much... just keep them coming, Rom.

Give the guy a rest. During our last corner he was exhausted. He's played almost every game, leave him on the bench this weekend

He needs a rest and we are in very busy period with Pogba missing already.

What was Welbeck's role exactly?

Contributing in building up attacks, I guess. Playing neat little combinations with his team mates. I like to see things like that. That being said, I like seeing us win, and Lukaku's goal did provide us with one today.

But our general play just seems so laboured at times.

Match-winner tonight, thankfully.

It was a great header for the goal, which he really needs to be doing a bit more as he can be a bit terrible at times.

Marginally he was better in 2nd half. Badly needs a rest though.
