Roman Abramovich plans to sell Chelsea | SOLD for £4.25BN

Why are people surprised Chelsea supporters are backing Abramovich? They've been sportwashed, it's happening at City and to Newcastle. Your average fan doesn't want to think about politics when it comes to watching and supporting your team. I dont feel sorry for Chelsea but I can understand the POV.
Yep. The Geordies dressed in Arab clothing and waving Saudi flags was the peak of that. Clearly they don't know or care about the fact their owner is a journalist butchering, homophobic, misogynistic war criminal that's made Putin's crimes seem tame by comparison. Lucky for them the Saudis are the good kind of scumbags as far as Britain is concerned.

But I don't sympathise with the fans nor understand their POV. We all love football and want our teams to prosper, but I'd absolutely hate if we were taken over by the Saudis for example, to the extend I'd find it hard to support the club. Some things are more important than tribalism in football.

Was Chelsea even considered a big team before Roman bought them?

They had only 1 First Division title before Roman, Aston Villa and Everton were bigger.

If only PL had 50+1, they could have avoided City, Chelsea and Newcastle, and United and Liverpool would be bulldozing most of the league titles, like Real and Barcelona in Spain, the league would be more predictable but no sportswashing.

Thing is that England is probably the most globalist european country in history, so no way they PL officials will block big investments no matter where they come from.

Do you disagree with him?

About the chanting? Yes.

A Tory minister tweeting that football fans should stop doing something will have the opposite effect though.

If he actually gave a shit he'd contact the club and get the manager and players to make a statement.

Growing up in the 90s I always saw them as the best of the rest (behind United, Liverpool, Newcastle, Arsenal).

That's what it's all about for most people despite their claims otherwise. They just want the status quo maintained.

If it was Liverpool that was took over people wouldn't have given a single feck (pre invasion).

I always love posts like these. It’s fun to see people so sure that just because they are indifferent to human suffering, anyone else must be as well.

I'm with you 100% there. I'd walk away. I'm sure many would rock up to Old Trafford in their Arab cosplay, but feck that.

If Chelsea goes into administration, even if its on a technicality to get the club sold, does that mean an automatic 9 point deduction from the Premier League?

If memory serves me right, theres some kind of deadline sometime around march/april where if by the administration happens after that the point deduction will be for the following season.

We saw with when AC Milan was being funded by this guy that there's no way near the same energy for traditional big clubs.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2015/09/11/putin-and-berlusconi-take-their-bromance-to-crimea/

And that doesn't mean people are indifferent to human suffering.
What does it mean then? That they aren’t indifferent to human suffering, but willingly accepting of it because their favorite club is winning stuff?
And what makes you think I’m alright with Berlusconi? And why would that even matter? I thought this was a thread about Chelsea and Abramovich especially?

Restricting the club in this way and staff losing jobs, just shows that football club ownership is completely broken.

Did Al Capone get to keep his chef after he got sent down? Did his cleaner keep getting paid? It’s shit, but it is what it is.

They’ve been the spoiled wife of a mafia boss for 20 years, showered with gifts and everything they wanted at his benevolence… they don’t get to act all indignant that they can’t keep their pretty dresses and moody jewellery once he gets nicked (in the metaphor, obviously)

They’ll inevitably just marry some other questionable shit eventually and get their lavish lifestyle back, fur coats an all, but it’s not like this wasn’t ever a possibility when your money comes from a criminal empire.

City and Newcastle have got mentioned multiple times in this thread as a by-product so why can't Milan/Berlusconi?

How far does that "willing to accept" thing stretch down too in your eyes? As you quite clearly think that applies to fans does it also include the players and coaches that have played for or managed the clubs? Does it include the clubs who accept their money for their players? Does it even stretch to the paycheck to paycheck employees? When in your eyes do people stop effectively becoming complicit?

It stretches down to fans repeatedly chanting his name during minutes of silence. That’s for sure. It also extends to people who use their spare time to defend him online, so others aren’t mean to the nice murderer who finances your shiny toys.
The idea that people somehow think Abramovich is bad but all those other entities named by you and other fans somehow aren’t, is quite absurd, by the way. I think they all suck, they are all part of what’s killing this beautiful sport and they all should be sanctioned. But the world ain’t perfect. So as of right now, I have to be happy that at least one war criminal is finally receiving the tiniest bit of consequences for his terrible actions.
You on the other hand seem to be hellbent on defending the man, downplaying his actions and accusing those who celebrate this tiny bit of justice of hypocrisy. In the end it’s your life and you decide what to with it. But if I ever caught myself defending a billionaire war criminal, I’d be ashamed. Especially over something as trivial as football.
Which leads me to arrive at the same conclusion I arrived at for the last few days. Your fanbase is the most morally bankrupt one I have ever encountered.

I dont know why they found it necessary to sing a song for him at all. I guess its different when your owner is your sugardaddy. When another club supporters sing about their owner it is usually to complain and all that negative stuffs.

I don't have any sympathy at all. We've seen fans willing to defend outright racism and turn blind eyes to where money comes, or just ignore the basics of right and wrong plenty of times, and Chelsea fans are a very long way from being any exception. No idea why anyone is surprised by the chanting or thinks it would be all that different if it was their own team's fans.

You can't have it both ways though. If you don't care about the moral implications of people dying to fund your football team, you don't get right to any sympathy or leeway when people dying stops the funding of your football team.

I feel sorry for people who might lose their jobs somewhere down the line but then not nearly as sorry as I feel for people who get killed by a Russian shell.

This does feel like we've reached the point in the past year or so where football has begun to drown in its own greed and corruption.

You know why, without Roman they would be a mid table team. He is their biggest legend.

Their fans booed Anton Ferdinand following the racist incident with John Terry. They're an odd bunch.

Not done any of that any where and I have been firm from the minute of the invasion that if he was involved in any aspect of it he should have the book thrown at him regardless of the consequences of the club.

I've not accused anyone of hypocrisy either in regards to comments regarding this invasion. My comment was solely in the context of down the years to which I used the (comparable) silence about how the Capello and Ancelotti success was funded.

It stretches down to fans repeatedly chanting his name during minutes of silence.
Which I've already condemned and decided against attending matches for the foreseeable (before i knew I couldn't) but you've already clearly decided that all Chelsea fans are the same so.....

Because they absolutely understand where they would be without him. They wouldn’t win shit. They are singing his name because they like him. They don’t give a shit about the suffering caused by him. If they did, they’d cheer the sanctions and would celebrate the opportunity to reclaim their club and free it from the hands of a war criminal. Instead they choose to celebrate him at a time when his cruelty and the consequences of it are on display for the whole world to see.

Chelsea probably burn through about £90m worth of cash in the next 3 months, don't know whether their due any money form sponsors or broadcasters during that period. I suspect they don't have that money in reserve.

Finally some level headed common sense has prevailed. All these calls for companies to drop anyone or anything Russian is getting tiresome. This woke world that we live in is an embarrassment, so much hypocrisy. I would be fine with it if they were consistent with their torches and pitch forks.

Totally different. That situation was moronic. This situation involves appreciation for everything he has done, a slight sense of injustice to the club and the fact that 99% of rich owners are god damn awful parasites, like the Glazers. They’re worried we will get thrown off to the next shady businessman. Don’t entirely agree with the chanting but let’s drop this made up sportswashing woke shite term and look at reality.

As I’ve said. Complete moral bankruptcy.

It has been estimated that without any sources of income coming in, Chelsea FC has between 17-20M pounds. Enough to keep operations and paying people for 17-21 days.

His post isn't good tbf, it's almost as bad as someone, say, tarring millions worldwide because of the actions of some.

This, great post.

Don’t remember any companies cancelling ties with Saudi Arabia over the war in Yemen or killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

Everyone trying to earn some woke points and show off

Don't entirely agree

Complete moral bankruptcy. Most were up in arms during the Super League fiasco shouting morality but now when the gangster owner is in trouble and through extension the club, it's suddenly unfair.
Agree, the sugar daddy is gone. They will sell the club that I have no doubt Roman gets no cash until he can take it to some court? New owners won't have his cash.

The hypocrisy of the PL is astonishing. If you are going to sanction on Roman and Chelsea, you better behave the same way to the other clubs. They just let the prince of saudi arabia buy newcastle, and the saudis are bombing jemen each day, and has been said to be the most bloody war in recent times. I guess as long as its not white people the PL don´t care.

The whole episode of the toon take over now they have finally realised after 20 yrs , Chelsea had a crook as its owners , blind eyes turned, Same as the Saudis , but somehow there money is fine, how long before something is done there?

Please stop spinning it this way, it's tiresome.

Wow, the word woke made it to the football forum.

What a shite word

The PL don’t care about people who aren’t white dying, clearly. I can’t bring any other conclusion from their behaviour.

Hypocrisy is when if you can’t do everything about a situation at exactly the same time, you’re woke if you do anything at all.

Smart

They had only 1 First Division title before Roman, Aston Villa and Everton were bigger.

Multiple teams were bigger or more significant, historically.

But Chelsea were consistently a top team (generally speaking) towards the end of the Bates era. When Roman came in, they were bigger in terms of current status than either City or - most recently - Newcastle at the time of their respective takeovers.

As far as I'm aware it's not the PL that's sanctioning Chelsea and Abramovich. The league aren't hypocrites, they'll take anybody's money.
