Rodri | ACL tear, out for the rest of the season? Yes

Big injury for a 28/29 year old player who is quite dynamic.

Could be curtains.
Think curtains is unlikely but doubt he's back fit and firing at the start of next season given the meniscus damage on top of the ACL. Van Dijk had the same injury at a similar age and it took him almost 2 years to get back to the same level (at what is almost certainly a less demanding position).

Though I don't wish injury on any player and I hope he fully recovers for his own sake, it's nice to finally see a spanner thrown into the works of Pep's perfect machine.

As if De Bruyne didn't have his fair share of injuries over the years and Haaland didn't miss a lengthly period last season...

Yes, but didn't they go on some absurd 76 game winning streak with Rodri in the team, and lost several of the PL games they played without him?

Probably a non-losing streak rather than a win streak.

Still, the idea that Pep's perfect machine never faced big obstacles is wrong.

This is true but the difference between their record with/without Rodri is so stark he’ll be a bigger loss than those other players.

Not to mention that I’m fairly sure De Bruyne’s most injured seasons tended to be seasons when City fell short in the league?

I thought there was some kind of deal in place between City and Madrid that they weren't allowed to take each other's players?
Nope. It's just pretty much impossible to sign players from City they don't want to sell. Infinite money doesn't just mean they don't need to sell, it also means they can make life for their stars extremely comfortable so they don't want to leave

Well, here's hoping their owners get the boot and the club is kicked out of the league. I'm sure he'd be quite happy to join you rather than play in the Conference League :)

True but to be fair City are pretty open at selling players their policy is if they want to leave they can go. Just looking at the names they’ve sold over the last 3-4 years you could argue nobody sells the quality of player that they do

They we’re open to selling Ederson this summer which was baffling for me

Old group of players they’ve got in midfield, they’re gonna feel some pain when they start rebuilding, replacing Gundogan with Gundogan not the best start

I said it last season that Mainoo could already be a starter for City if he played for them (ofc no one agreed), since he's a much better Gundogan replacement than either Kovacic or Nunes or anyone they had in their squad after he left. Now they've got him back but he turns 34 very soon. It's no surprise they wanted to pry the kid away from United several times at youth level.

Just shows how imperative he is for this city side, could be a rough season for them.

He'll be off to see one of Pep's special doctors and be back in time to see them over the line in the final few games.

They're done without him. There are very few replacements for him in the world and if they exist, they won't sign for City on a short-term basis in January. Can see City just focusing on the CL this year because they won't be winning the league.

Nope the season kdb missed most was the 98-97 season vs Liverpool. He played most games the season Liverpool beat us.

Their was a big discussion with City fans kinda like the Bruno one or haaland ones where people argued the midfield was better without him.

As for the rodri thing while he does bump us up a level the entire thing is based on a run of 3 straight defeats when he got injured last time, but we were in dire form anyway. Arsenal being one of the 3.

It was Laporte’s injury that last caused them not winning the league the last time (well, it was the most important out of the injury-related reasons).

Eh. Combination of no Fernandinho in the middle ('cause he had to cover at the back) and just bizzarro season, where their opponents could faceplant in midfield and somehow hit the ball with their dick and it would hit Fernandinho and go into the top corner

That, plus Liverpool winning their first 50 million games which kinda killed their motivation by December

As I’ve said, the most important out of the injury-related ones although there were tons of other reasons. Lack of luck (and abundance of it on Liverpool’s part) was probably more important. I’m pretty sure that they were ahead of Liverpool by expected points despite trailing more or less hopelessly s after the first few months.

Well, KDB missed months last season... They still won the league.

I'm not saying losing Rodri isn't a big blow for them. Possibly the biggest they had during Pep's tenure. Just that looking at it as if they never had major challenges due to injuries is incorrect.

They have no like for like replacement for Rodri, and his role as a monster 2 way player is harder to replace collectively since it's not just a matter of getting Bernardo Silva/Graelish/Doku more involved as playmakers

I'm not disputing that.

I was simply responding to the original claim that "it's nice to finally see a spanner thrown into the works of Pep's perfect machine", as if they never had major injuries or difficulties.

It might be the biggest one yet, but they found ways to deal with major issues before.

The only one hurting more from Rodri’s injury than Pep will be Klopp.

the one season they had an issue this major they ended trophyless

*2 actually, but we can chalk Guardiola'a first season as an adaptation period

The transformation he's had in the last couple of years is fantastic. I still remember the posts from City fans here mocking Pep for playing Gundogan and Rodri in the 2020 UCL match against Lyon.

I thought Kimmich was the best CM a couple of years back but Rodri has reached a level Kimmich hasn't yet. Definition of complete midfielder today.

Completely deserved. 1 game lost in 90 mins in over a year for club and country.

Was half expecting to see that he'd made a miraculous recovery after visiting Pep's special doctor, and that he'd be starting City's next match.
