Roberto Firmino

I only watched him for 3 games, but it seems like he does everything with one or two touches. Has a cannon strike too.

Strange post. If Depay and Nani can't be classified as wingers just because they occasionally cut inside, you need to revise your definition of a winger. Januzaj has hardly ever played anything other than winger for us. And how is Young a wingback all of a sudden? He's been playing left-winger his entire career, including the majority of last season. Then you have Mata, who may be a no. 10 but is playing on the wing, and Di Maria, who is as much a winger as he is a midfielder, and you have at least six players for two positions without counting Valencia, who is a natural winger.

And if we want to stretch a little bit, there is also Lingard and Wilson.

Squad's depth, Memphis... think high quality squad's depth.

He's a bit too creative to play #9 role to be honest. We'll find someone there.
confused by this are saying that Memphis is just squad depth or high quality squad depth?

This signing would be in Fellainis place. Basically a mid three of Carrick Herrera Firminio with Depay Rooney and Mata upfront.

Nah, he is more an attacker than a midfielder, if you really want to make groups, it would be front 4 with Depay, Rooney, Mata and Firmino.

Exciting signing if true. And a great price. Firmino and Memphis for around €40m is excellent business.

City have been linked too so maybe they're confusing United with City?

It seems everyone has stopped counting Di Maria as part of the team.

I think that he means that between them we will have a high quality depth.

From what I've seen he'd be a good buy if we were to play him up front, in sort of a false 9 role. That's not going to happen with Rooney here though, he doesn't seem to fit winger position that much and we're stocked at number 10 with Mata and Rooney capable of playing there and possibility of incorporating Di Maria there as well.

For £13m we should go for it mind.

So, this guy good enough to walk into the team as a nailed on starter or is he more someone who will be in and out of the team at first?

How do you work out that we have 5 wingers at the moment? We don't, we have

Nani - More of an inside forward than a 7/11
Depay - See Nani
Januzaj and Mata's are #10
Yoiung and Val are wing backs..

At most you can play Nani or Januzaj on right with Mata/ Depay on left but in reality your putting 10s on the wing

Van Gaal prefers inverted wingers and even without Nani, Valencia and Lingard we've got 5 options out wide of whom 2 you could class as 10's in Mata and Januzaj. Mata has shown to be a great option to have out wide but I expect him mostly in midfield personally, Januzaj mostly played on the wing aswell. Not sure why you class Young as wingback when he's mostly played left winger since we no longer play with wingbacks.

LW: Young, Memphis, Januzaj
RW: Di Maria, Mata, Januzaj

I do think we'll need to strenghten our attack, but on paper we've got balanced options out wide. If Firmino is 2nd choice striker who can fill in on the wings I'd be fine with that. I wouldn't want a primarily 10/winger who can do a job at striker though if that makes sense.

In four competition system he could be rotated and still get game time like a typical first team player.

I hope this is true. The last time I watched him he was playing for Brazil and I thought he looked impressive. Remembered thinking we could use someone like that. Never know how they'll adapt to the Premier League but at 18M Euros, we wouldn't be losing too much to find out imho.

Top, top player.

Can get up and down, great engine, cracking left peg, social, decent in the air, silky touch. Get him signed. Hot scarf shot. Happy days. CHAM21ONS.

Never heard of him.

Fwiw, I love this sort of signing. He's played enough that you can see he's talented but you have no idea how good he'll actually end up being. Those sort of Ronaldo/Nani/Anderson buys are the most fun, even if they don't always work out.

Looks good, remember people mentioning him a fair bit alongside dybala and lacazette for strikers they'd like to see at the club.
Not the kind of striker i expected van gaal to go for but could work out well with rooney as the 10 or vice versa.

He sounds pretty ideal to me tbh. We've got 2 good experienced strikers in RvP and Rooney and he looks more than ready to make the step up.
Give Wilson a couple of years and we could be sorted in that dept for a while (optimism is nice :))

Been saying for ages we should bring him in. He's going to be a top striker if he is given the chance to play there. Like Saha but more skillful. I'd have him alternating with Rooney between striker and AM. Dunga uses him perfectly.
Saha's hold up play was excellent. Is this guy's hold up play good given rooney's has regressed hugely?

Saha used to be very good at turning defenders, Rvp at holding it up and bringing others in. We completely lack that now if Rvp leaves.

That's why Copa America will be brilliant this year:drool: We can not only watch quality players like Messi, James, Tevez, Falcao, Aguero, Neymar, Vidal, Sanchez and our own boys (Rojo, Di Maria) but we can also check out some United targets like Otamendi and Firmino playing for two of the strongest teams on the tournament:drool:

Looks a great prospect, probably best in a false 9 or playing off the striker.
