Rio Olympics 2016

A guy I know is competing today in the Men's K1 Kayak Slalom if anybody wants to watch somebody "local" at the Olympics.

Johny Akinyemi is a Warrington athlete representing Nigeria and races at (approximately) 5:22pm today, with his second run at roughly 7:22pm. Johny didn't have much luck in the run up to Rio and almost didn't make it due to his custom built kayak being damaged in transit followed by a problem with his intended flight to the games. A social media campaign was able to raise awareness of his unfortunate circumstances and get him there for the opening ceremony, where he proudly walked out with the rest of team Nigeria.

the BBC article is here:

He's one of the nicest blokes you could ever hope to meet and 100s of friends and family will be proudly watching him compete later today.

Good Luck #Kayakinyemi

He did quite well in the first 2/3 of the track, then the problems and penalties came. Good luck to him in second round.

My friends sister who I also use to swim with around 10 years ago finished 3rd overall in the 100m backstroke earlier and in the semi's. Get in

Awful crash by the leader in the Women's race. I hope she's ok. :(

Incredible final again but I'm sure everyone had that crash in their minds. I hope she's okay. Gold medal is secondary for now.

:(

Just watched it again and that is sickening.

It's a bit grim that the race goes on and people are gripped by the drama of the finish when in the back of everyone's mind they've just saw someone suffer a potentially life-threatening injury, and they've saw it up close and personal too.

Dutch coach just confirmed she is in an ambulance and is back to consciousness.
Thank feck for that if true, was dreading the worst with the way she landed and didn't move in the time it took for the next rider to pass.

How horrifying must this be for her family? Imagine watching a loved one suffer a potentially deadly crash on live television with no idea if she's ok and no way to find out. Feck me. :(

Unfortunately couldn't put together a good round and his Olympics is over. Similar story to London - think he'll be disappointed with himself but everybody is proud of the work he's put in to get there and we know he gave his all.

Nice to see the Brit qualify in second place after an incredible second run

Lots of conflicting reports about Van Vleuten. First was reported as her being fine, now seems to be intensive care with serve concussion and 3 fractures in her spine.

Remember when Schumacher was taken to hospital, it was first just reported as a precautionary visit..

Are cycling crashes like that relatively common on the tougher tracks or should there be some concerns raised about the suitability of the track? The commentators mentioned treacherous a lot more often than I'd have expected them to.

watching beach volleyball

Germany vs Egypt
How they can play dressed like that :wenger:

The descent on those corners of the track down that hill looked very dangerous, as were proved yesterday in the mens race where two of the leaders crashed around the same spot.

Apparently she has 3 fractured vertebrae and a severe concussion as you said. Dutch newspaper indicated she would remain in intensive care for at least another 24 hours but that she has full functionality of her body. Seems to lean toward her being in good shape comparatively to what was initially feared.

Anybody watching the women's double tennis? USA v Czech.

The Czechs are absolutely handing it to the Williams sisters, especially the taller girl with the headband on!. She's having the game of her life surely.

Those blind corners and the dangerous concrete border, I'd say they were looking for trouble. It was within the final 20km so riders were always going to take huge risks that close to an olympic medal.

You'd think they'd be more in the know than anyone else, but conflicts with other reports. Hard to see how spinal fractures wouldn't be considered serious.

The Czechs win in 2 straight sets, very impressive.

Gold and Silver for Britain!

Adam Peaty is a beast, breaking his own world record in the breaststroke. Jazz Carlin (Manchester United fan) did well, although Ledecky destroyed everyone.

I hate the dressage

Silly sport and my tv station cut away from judo for this crap
I don't know how that fraud of an activity be called a sport and be at Olympics. Might as well introduce Cricket in T20 format then. West Indies will split into 4-5 countries(GB will consolidate 3 though), we have around 16 who play World cup in shorter format and some more who play for qualifying. Then Chinese and US will start playing any sport if Olympics medal a possibility.
