Rio Olympics 2016

Do any of you people know how much training and physical effort goes into Dressage for both rider and horse?
A vast majority of horses are not "forced" to do it, they are asked to and they want to do it obviously. You can't force an animal much bigger and stronger than yourself to do stuff with so much elegance and passion. It just doesn't work.

Then gymnastics should be banned, too, because most of the elite athletes competing in those sports are trained at a very young age and they suffer lots of injuries from it...
or even marathon, Kalenjin kids from Kenya get told to train for it at a minor age, which is not healthy at all.
Most sports have bad sides, i honestly don't see why Dressage should not be considered a sport as it obviously is one due to the physical and mental (concentration is a major part of it, just like in shooting, golf or other sports) training that is necessary to compete on the biggest stage.

A horse, is not a club, gun, vault....not everyone one is on a level playing field. An athletle might have better engineered shoes, or bikes, but having the best horse is a complete disadvantage to everyone else, they are doing 95% of the work.

I dont really care about if it being a sport or not, but i dont think it should be in the Olympics, however.

That is abit true. I'm also not sure if this sport belongs in the Olympics because a horse is not a tool like a bike or a bow. I was only going against the "Dressage isn't a sport, just dancing" stuff.

Have you ever sat on a horse? Then you would know that Horse riding, Dressage, Jumping or whatever only works when horse and rider work together. If you hurt or force a horse, it will buck and you will fall down. That is why i'm very much against "sports" like Rodeo or Bullfighting because that is where you hurt an animal to make it angry and that is disgusting.

I don't really have any opinion on it, I just found the idea of asking the horse and it wanting to do it funny.

Cowboys would very much disagree with your description of rodeo, by the way.

I know, that cowboys would probably disagree with my opinion, but the flank strap surely does hurt.

You could make that argument for anything. The distinction between sport/not sport is arbitrary; an art competition used to be part of the olympic's and I don't see people clamouring to have that re-included - despite the fact you can make exactly the same arguments for it as you can for dressage.

My only real problem with dressage is that its a bit shit. Obviously thats subjective, but I'm not sure it has the widespread appeal outside of rich toffs prancing around with their horses to justify its presence at the games. There's other sports that better encapsulate the modern world and would be more deserving of public funding than it.

Thanks for calling me a rich toff . But of course i get your point and that's fine, then we have to agree to disagree.

Somebody lobby for introducing Cricket at Olympics ffs...At least India will be very likely to get a medal in one sport. I can't be sure though :nervous:

Wow, loved the men's K1 1000 final. Excellent race, gotta love when the outsider surprises everyone.

Thats mostly the ECB/ICC's fault though. The IOC seems relatively open to the concept - besides in England its a bit rich for someone to criticise one sport for being elitist and then champion the cause of cricket, even though that stereotype doesn't seem to exist elsewhere - and it could happen if cricket so desired.

I tend to get the impression it was introduced so aristocrats can win Olympic medals.

I think MMA should be an Olympic sport.

Nicola Adams fighting now.

A bye through to the quarter final is a pretty sweet deal. One win and you get a medal.

Conlan robbed in the boxing. Definite cheating going on.

Conlon gets completely robbed, what a bloody joke. When did they decide to score for the guys who'd look more at home brawling outside a pub than in a ring. The Russian guy was clearly beaten in the last round and again today but gets decisions in both. Conlon clearly won the 1st and beat the piss out of him in the second. The last round was close to be fair but no way he lost that fight. Obviously someone told the judges to score mostly for agression, which is bullshit. Floyd would've lost half his fights if it were scored mostly for that FFS.

I don't know a huge amount about boxing, but i thought Conlon won that very clearly in all three rounds.

What the absolute feck was that? Absolutely robbed. Poor lad. Olympic boxing is a total shambles.

Fair play to him for speaking his mind. Gave the judges the middle finger at the end too.

Gold for the 10K open water and both the female handbal and volleybal teams to the semi's. Good afternoon.
Who's the favourite for tonight's hockey game? I must admit I don't follow hockey at all outside of the Olympics but our team has been performing very well this time. The Netherlands are a hockey nation though so I reckon you're still the better team? I hope it's going to be an exciting game.

I posted a Guardian article earlier in the thread written before the Olympics started that claimed the judging in the boxing would be corrupted.

Weird that a 400m specialist is also this good on the 200m. I would've thought it's a whole other discipline - you can sprint at 100% for 200m but as soon as it's 400m you have to plan your race better and divide your power throughout. Merritt has the fastest time this year as well if I'm not mistaken or definitely close to it.

Just saw the Conlon fight. Won the first round, comfortably won the second, close third. Ridiculous decision.

Haven't the foggiest mate, I don't watch Hockey at all. It's big here, so I suspect they are pretty much the favorites.

Another gold for NL, in saling.
