Film Ridley Scott is making Gladiator 2

Storyline looks more like a remake than a sequel, but I love the original and it was a must on the big screen at the time so looking forward to it nonetheless.

Nothing less than 100 piece orchestra for trailer music, that's the Gladiator fandom's demand.

Just noticed that the dopey kid from season one of White Lotus (the one that was sent to sleep on the beach) is apparently one of the villains in Gladiator 2.

Much better trailer than the first, but it basically looks like a remake rather than a sequel.

I’m usually a big fan of Mescal but his delivery seems a bit off. Will be interesting to see if he can actually pull off a big blockbuster role.

I love how all of Rome's buildings, pillars, obelisks and arches are pale white and colourless as though they're ancient.

Is it so hard to get a decent historian in to put some colour on the monuments? Amateur hour.

I suppose they're going with what people think it looked like compared to what it actually looked like.

Was the same with the first and considering all the other inaccuracies in there then it's fair enough.

His accent is weird. I wonder what he’s going for?

Also. Those CGI apes look terrible.

It looks a bit like he regrets not having gone ham enough on the Colosseum battles and wanted more animals and ships and stuff so did it again but bigger and sillier? And yes the zombie ape things are an error.

Also, I know it's dumb but given they normally put on English accents to show they're olde timee, Denzel stands out as being very American. I think he might end up being a poor casting choice.

Been reading some very very positive early reviews for the movie on Twitter and people saying it could win Denzel an Oscar?! A bit surprising to me because the trailer looked meh/okay.

I was surprised at that too. I expected Denzel to be good because he always is, but I’m surprised the film is apparently good too.

There's always positive early reviews on social media regarding films with known ip's.

This place has to be the most miserable place on earth I swear! Looks great to me, I fancy watching it in IMAX.

True Detective Night Country had great early reviews too. The game is rigged.

The trailers have some very good looking stuff in there but it feels like we are given the same film again except with rhinos and ships this time.

Also a black guy high in hierarchy chilling with the whiteys in ancient Rome? In the words of Clay Davis: shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
I hope there's some reasonable context and they just didn't shoehorn in Denzel just because.

The romans didn’t care much about skin color, as far as I know. They were discriminatory in other ways.

Also, Denzel is not that dark, so can easily play a north african, which were plenty in the empire.

aye. a fair few emperors were of arab descent. we’re talking about fairly civilised people, not modern day america.

Hannibal is the HBO show which is crying out to be made. 20 years of racking up wins against the Roman Republic in spectacular ancient battles. Basically and 2200 year old (ish) pirate. They should make that show and plot every battle and intrigue surrounding Hannnibal methodically.

They absolutely did care, the North African emperors were white.

I'm not overly bothered by it, artistic license and all, but if you go down the rabbit hole then there are plenty of stuffs to pull apart.

Yes, they cared a great deal. The difference was this: you could be non-white or non-Romanic and be in charge of substantial colonial outposts much as we (the west) or others back warlords which are non-western today with the agreement that we make them rich and they give us all their natural resources at extremely low prices (if they refuse this down the line, we then point the finger at them and say, but look how rich and corrupt they are: the exact compact we offered them).

They did all speak English in Rome, though, right? Irish people were Gladiators, right? They fought against Chilean's in the arena. Then of course the Spanish all spoke with Australian accents. Obviously, there's some reasonable context, and they just didn't shoehorn in pasty white and South American actors without so much as a raised eyebrow.

Can you back this up with some source? They cared about ancestry, culture and social status a lot but I don’t think skin color was a big factor. At least I’ve never come across that.

Mary Beard is a good source for this.

Race is a social construct. The Roman world had a different conception of race to the modern world, whose ideas of race were created via African slavery.

The North African emperors probably would not be seen as having white European or Black African ethnicity.

The Romans were deeply racist, but in a very different sense to how we understand it today. So were the Greeks with barbarians as well.
