I like all the characters and the goofy humor a lot and would love the show a lot more if it got rid of reductionism.
The show's pretty much about reductionism.
The human family reacts like normal family and the character development is fine. It's the 'oh if you start humanity we'll purge again' status quo bullshit that's bit bland.

Yeah, it felt a bit odd for a show this nihilistic to then try and tug on the heartstrings in its season finale.
It was depressing though. Felt like a proper end to a series rather then a season finale.

Last season's finish was far better and one of my favourite episodes - having the houseparty to showcase the weirdest and funniest stuff they possibly could plays to the show's strengths. I don't really watch Rick and Morty for its plot.
I don't find the episodes sad. Especially the one where Rick tried to kill himself in the Unity episode. I was actually laughing at that and thought it was a piss take...
19 more episodes have been ordered for season 3. Unfortunately, reports say we'll have to wait until March 2017. 
The only reason I had any knowledge of this show is because of this thread, I can't wait until 2017!

A friend of mine turned me on to this show a couple of weeks ago. I only have season 2 finale left.
