Rest In Peace, Denis Law

Devastating news.

He was a fascinating player, it was truly an eye-opening experience watching his games retrospectively as you'd assume that he was a goal-hungry fox in the box but he was such a complete player — it's not surprising as, as he'd said himself, he based a lot of his game on Di Stéfano.

And an exemplary human being by all accounts, I don't think I've ever seen anyone talking negatively about him. Such a great story-teller as well. Rest in peace, King.

Well, woke up to this news earlier this morning and absolutely devastated. Needless to say, have had something in my eye nearly all day. As the username implies, my all-time favourite player.
Denis single handedly brought the club out of the post-Munich trauma (and helped us escape relegation) Bobby Charlton was clearly badly affected by it and his game suffered. Denis’ vitality, humour, determination, feistiness and genius helped the club and Bobby out of his deep hole, along with Paddy Crerand (his mate) and we became Cup Winners when it was very much a valued trophy. Then along came young George and we were transformed and a thrilling side to watch. For me, this was the real foundation of our support. You’ve probably all seen that photo of him with his shirt nearly torn from his neck vs dirty Leeds, as he was standing up to Jack Charlton, towering over him. He was fast, but really, he was quick. The very definition. So much so, that he had dozens of goals chalked off for offside because he was far too quick for the lino. He would admonish them with a disapproving finger wag and a grin, and the refs all took it in good humour, followed by a ripple of laughter through the crowd. You young us will correctly treasure Eric’s time with us for his leadership and character but Denis was on another level. Remember the season he won the European footballer of the year, he seemed to score a hat trick every week.

Moriarty: that Forest goal is a treasured memory of mine. Neck and neck for the title with them and time running out. Me and my mate left the Stretford End and ran around to the United Road cantilever stand to take advantage of early leavers and jumped into their seats. No sooner had we sat down and along came the third consecutive corner. Like lightning, Denis just threw himself skyward, somersaulted in mid air and it was game over. Never seen a player with reflexes like the King and the Stretford End adored him.

Denis, Denis… I’d walk a million miles for one of your goal

What a player… what a man

Childhood memories never fade

I am old enough and fortunate enough to have seen the great Denis Law playing for Manchester United. He was easily the most clever and skillful forward I have had the pleasure in witnessing.

Apart from his fantastic goal scoring, he was a very good passer of the ball and hardly ever gave the ball away.

Quite slight in build but surprisingly strong.
And his acceleration was extremely rapid.

Just a great player.

RIP King
No black banner at the top of the page anymore, we not doing that on Redcafe anymore?

Alex Stepney (goalkeeper and former team-mate):

"So sad to hear that Denis has passed away. Nothing less than a giant of the game and I'm proud to have been his team-mate and friend. God bless Den, rest in peace."

Paddy Crerand (midfielder and former team-mate):

"Denis was a great friend, and one of the best players they ever had at Old Trafford. What a player he was. He was very intelligent on the pitch; quick as lightning. What a great lad he was off the pitch. There were no airs and graces to Denis, he was just an ordinary lad like everybody else. There are quite a few players today that are special players, but Denis was a special, special player."

Eric Cantona (another legendary Reds goalscorer):

"Rest in peace Denis. You were one of those who helped me feel at home in Manchester United. Thank you my friend!"

Wayne Rooney (another legendary United goalscorer):

"Legend. Thoughts with all Denis’ family and friends."

Gary Neville (former Reds captain):

"Rest in peace, Denis. A great footballer and a great man. It's a privilege and an honour to have spent time in your company. The King of the Stretford End."

David Beckham (former United midfielder):

"Tonight we lost a true gentleman of the game. Our heart goes out to Denis's family. "Our hearts are heavy tonight. A legend on the field but the perfect gentleman off."

Lee Sharpe (ex-United winger):

"Sad to hear about the passing of Denis Law, a true icon and an irreplaceable part of Manchester United's history. I was lucky enough to share a few beers with him and his family in Portugal years ago. He was so charismatic yet so humble with a great sense of humour. They don’t make them like that anymore. My thoughts are with his wife Diane and all his family."

Paul McGuinness (former FA Youth Cup-winning coach and son of ex-manager Wilf):

"Denis was so charismatic but humble at the same time - full of mischief in a quiet but supremely confident way. All the real greats I’ve met just have that aura. He takes his place in the pantheon of greats. Sympathies to the Law family from all the McGuinness family."

Mickey Thomas (ex-United winger):

"One of the greats of world football - the King Denis Law RIP."

John Shiels MBE (Manchester United Foundation Chief Executive):

"For someone who many regarded as the King, he was one of the most humble people I knew. So grounded, really lovely company, but great - in every sense of the word. Rest in peace, Denis."

Clive Tyldesley (commentator):

"You only really have one boyhood hero. RIP Denis. Thank you for being so special."

David De Gea and Andy Cole were among the first to post their love for the Scotsman on social media.

Denis's other former clubs - Huddersfield Town, Torino and Manchester City, also shared their thoughts on their ex-striker.

Huddersfield Town: "All at Huddersfield Town are profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Denis Law. A legend of not only our great lub, but an immortal of the sport as a whole, he will be deeply missed and his memory cherished by us all. Our collective thoughts are with Denis’ family and loved ones at this time. Once a Terrier, always a Terrier."

Torino: President Urbano Cairo and the entire Torino Football Club remember with emotion and affection, Denis Law. Former Granata player in the 1961/62 season, an absolute champion."

Manchester City: "The whole of Manchester, including everyone at City, is mourning with you. Rest in peace, Denis. Our thoughts are with Denis’ family and friends at this difficult time."

Denis' career was well before my time but I do remember when I was a kid, probably about 11 or 12, and I was on a train in my United shirt. An old bloke came over and told me I looked like a young Denis Law. I knew a little about him from reading books on the history of the club but he then spent a couple of minutes talking about how great he was.

RIP

Shed a few tears this morning listening to older reds talking about him.

One thing that struck me is how strong he must have been mentally in his early seasons. This was a United still grieving from Munich. To be able to thrive in that environment would have taken incredible strength.

The football club would never have become what it is now without him, Best and Charlton.

This post has a great video which gives an idea as to the player he was (great work in that thread @Joga Bonito ).

A lot more talented and a lot more all round player than maybe thought. Really quick feet, brave as anything, good passing, ran for ever, an amazing header of the ball and could score every type of goal there was … a bit of Ruud, a bit of Rooney, a bit of Eric but a lot of Denis.

Again, rightly deserves equal footing with the other two members of the Holy Trinity.

Playing Style

Many seem to have this warped conception that Law was a speedy and pure goalscorer in the mould of a Greaves or a Romario, who primarily operated on the shoulder of the last man and solely focused on putting the ball into the net. No. Law had much much more in his locker. Whilst Law was a goal-scoring supremo, do not make the mistake of underestimating his all-round game. As a player, Law had everything - flair, bravery, the ruthlessness streak, technique and the magical ability to keep fans right on the edge of their seats.

As Law himself said

A perfect compilation which illustrates the multi-faceted game-play of the cultured, jet-heeled Scot. I advise anyone and everyone to watch it.

So So very true, not only his ability to score goals but his heading ability, his ability to read a game and his passing ability long or short was outstanding and I think many forget his that his tackling skills were also outstanding. Thank you Denis for the memories, RIP.
