Portuguese press was convinced it was essentially a done deal as well

The Portuguese press have been insistent we're on the verge of signing Gaitan every window for the last 6 years to be fair. The club's there love using us to drive up interest.

Anyway so Benfica used us as a bargaining chip with Bayern.
Nothing to see here sadly.

:lol::lol::lol:

Can't make this up. Definitely scouting Gaitan all this time. Too lazy to look up my own quote:wenger:

Isn't United linked to pretty much everyone all year long?

Not with similar weight to this though, look at the length of the thread. Some of the biggest transfer saga's we've had in recent years are Thiago, Vidal and this kid and look where they all ended up! Fair play to you guys though.

Bayern don't know how to prepare a bid imo.

Preparation is the key, it's more important than signing anyone honestly.

Bayern are amazing. What a well run club.

They leave United, Real and Barca in the shade . That's the kind of management I'd love here. Efficient. No dithering. It was the same with Van Gaal as their manager, they saw a problem and took a chance and acted on it.

Bizarre. Bayern paying €80m for an 18-year old in a position they don't need to upgrade?
I struggle to believe the 80m or at least the criteria for it to happening have to be totally absurd, but I'm sure we'll find out in detail soon enough.

Midfield was easily our weakest position the last 2 seasons by the way. Only Vidal played to a for us acceptable level in 2016, Thiago has been really disappointing and often benched in key games by Pep. Alonso is way past it and Martinez hasn't played in midfield in quite a while now and is difficult to judge. We definitely needed to sign a midfielder more than anything else.

We didn't need him. And from what little I saw of him, didn't look like a must have. The upgrade we need in the midfield is a creative player ala Modric/Gundogan, and a Carrick replacement. This guy is neither.

Still incredible that an 18 year old with very little football can eventually cost Bayern 80m Euros. Though, I am sure that additional 45m Euros won't be as easily achievable as they were in Martial's transfer fee.

Absolutely gutted.

Just shows what a load of rubbish the press talk. As far as we knew it was nailed on, then Bayern sign him for about quarter of the reputed fee

I guess Woodward listened to the caf after all. Hope you're all happy :(
Indeed. It doesn't prevent people from believing the stuff time and time again.

Why is everyone here assuming that we look like mugs, can someone please explain it to me?
It looks more like once again United's name have been used by a club/agent/player to force through deals.
It happens year on year, get used to it. It doesn't bother me because it's always nonsense rumors.
Don't forget how happily the media spreads this fiction.

What the hell, I thought this was a done dealio basically

Makes me wonder how wrong the media are about everything else that might be happening this summer.....
As every year, they'll be more often wrong than right.

That's the problem of signing players when the question of who will be manager is lingering

So I guess we can look forward to seeing this thread at the top of the caf after every Bayern game for the next 2+ years?

I'm not even sure why Jose has come up in discussion. I was merely speaking of the current situation and those in charge.
I didnt quote you when I was making the oriiginal point. I was talking about how everyone takes this news as a proof for something totally unrelated.

If we can happily bench Schneiderlin, I don't think we're that desperate for a tackling/box-to-box midfielder, to be honest...

So he's worth the 80m now?
If anything this shows how full of crap the media are.

People throwing their toys out of the pram we didn't sign a player most have never seen play.

Isn't that a bit of a moot point?
I get your meaning. I just feel that if they are spending that much then the player should be expected to feature heavily in the first team from the off, and yet he won't really upgrade their midfield.

I mentioned before that I could see Carlo building the team around Lewa + Müller as a real 2 forward attack and might opt for a diamond in midfield to make it happen or at least some sort of 4 man midfield. It would mean that Alaba's role at leftback would also become a lot more influential, which I'd love to see. But there are still a few missing pieces or at least questionmarks about who would play the holding and attacking midfield roles.

There's also the possibility that Sanches won't be a regular starter next season anyway, but considering how much money we're willing to pay, he really should get lots of playing time.
Yeah, and you have a lot of natural width in your team to play a diamond - Costa, Coman, Robben & Ribery (if the latter 2 ever recaptures their best form). It is going to be interesting. I wanted to ask and now you've mentioned it - it seems you're confident Lewandowski will stay? I don't know of any rumors or interest, but thought Madrid might be looking to replace Benzema this summer.

No you're right, they were talking about us having to pay £40 to £60 million for him. Yet he has gone for under £28 million. Same when we wanted Douglas they wanted us to pay £35 million but then they sold him to Schaktar for £12 million. Other teams take the piss
Yeah man, like I said, I don't have the facts but it always feels that way. Whenever we're in for a player, we seem to pay quite a bit. It could obviously all be media driven bollocks as well. Like the intial Schweinsteiger fee - didn't most outlets in the UK say we paid 12-15m GBP, and in the end a German newspaper clarified that the fee was around 6?

No he isn't my friend. Expensive, yes.
Oh I know he isn't. It was the general opinion on here that he was.
Watch this thread do a 180 and he becomes this fantastic talent that Bayern have snapped up from under our incompetent noses.

Not with similar weight to this though, look at the length of the thread. Some of the biggest transfer saga's we've had in recent years are Thiago, Vidal and this kid and look where they all ended up! Fair play to you guys though.
Yeah, that's fair enough. We like to steal your midfield targets. Though we were interested in Vidal way before you guys were and already had agreed on a contract with him back in 2011 when he moved to Juve because Leverkusen denied him the move to us. And Thiago simply couldn't resist once Pep called him, so it's probably more likely that we work more quietly behind the scenes while United's transfer dramas are more public. Which is really odd, because usually keeping things quiet isn't our strength at all, but at least in terms of transfers we managed to do that really well in recent years.

I get your meaning. I just feel that if they are spending that much then the player should be expected to feature heavily in the first team from the off, and yet he won't really upgrade their midfield.

On the contrary I think they're paying for the fact he could be a useful squad player for 6 years and then be worth double that when he's only 24 and has a decade of play left at the top.

I guess a lot of people on here are happy about this since he is such an average talent.
Lucky for us that we have the much better Ekangamene so no real loss aftet all.

I'd let you have Alonso for free, but somehow I think he won't go to United because of his Liverpool past :(

Nah he need to be totally useless and we should pay good money for him. Someone like Hargreaves or Bastian
