Religion, what's the point?

Shut up childen, adults are talking.

*It's actually not as amazing as you'd hope, and some of it is quite dated, but, you know, it's still better than listening to virtually anyone you'll listen to this week.

Nice, will give it a watch. Used to love Carl Sagan when I was younger, but never heard him talk, only read his books.

He's got a strange voice, but he is quality.

Started watching Cosmos recently, it's very outdated with in the graphics department (being that it was made in the 70's), but the content is very good.

Also been watching a lot of Richard Dawkins video's on YouTube.

God is screaming at the world I am coming soon, for the last 500 years? Is god a porn star or sumat?

And now the religion issue has come between the new girl and I. Apparently it means far more to her than she was letting on. However, I am very open-minded and willing to concede for my partner to be happy (except against right-wing US politics and fortunately she's on the same side as me there). We're having a long talk over dinner tonight.

Any non-believers dating a believer or vice versa? How do you co-exist?

A 'long talk' about religious beliefs/you're lack of religious beliefs, will only end in tears mate.

I don't really see how religion would come into play if you really like someone anyway. Unless she's a complete and utter nutter when it comes to religion and likes to lecture you 24/7 about it. It's irrelevant to me and I'm as non-religious as they come.

My daughter is dating an agnostic. She is ok with that..but then while she is a Christian, she is not crazy about organised religion...suppose that makes it easier. Is she a regular church goer? you could go with and read a book I suppose.

It's not so much whether you're open-minded as whether she is.

A bit like those who won't date someone of a different religion.

Possibly but it isn't out of bigotry just practically I know it would annoy me consistently which would put pressure on the relationship. And I wouldn't have kids any where near any religion.

How heavy is she into the religion? Does she pray? You can PM me. Had prior experience

I can't see religion being a bigger problem in relationships than you make it yourself. Obviously if it means that she doesn't want to have sex before marriage then that's problem for most people, but not all christians follow the 10 commandments strictly.

The only way I can see it being a problem is if she insists I attend church with her or something like that.

She seems fine so far as she's cleary into me but I told her I would attend a mass with her to see the experience, she was happy about that. I can do all that mass stuff but I'll still believe what I believe just won't bring it up much. We both dislike evangelical christianity and don't believe in revelations and stuff. She's also a huge supporter of gay rights, hates republicans, and other stuff so it seems like this shouldn't be a huge issue.

Kids and religion - cross that line if/when it comes to pass. I certainly won't have any sons serving as alter boys!

Well this bird has a healthy sexual appetite and doesn't force gospel music on me. Problems would certainly arise if the opposite comes forth. I can understand why the other poster had issues/called it off.

I was watching the sequel to the Four Horsemen last night, and as much as I agree with virtually everything they say, naturally, it's a bit of a weird, pointless, smugfest. The shit mock bookcase thing in the background doesn't help either.

It's basically like watching every coked up conversation I've ever had in a kitchen at 4 in the morning, only I can't join in or borrow a cigarette off anyone.

Still, anyway, here it is. It's badly missing Hitchens. And an actual room with an actual bookcase.

I am sick of Dawkins, Harris, Dennet and religion vs science debates in general. Esp. Harris. Can he please stop harping on about how science defines morality please? He's the Dinesh D'Souza of the science camp and I can't fecking stand Dinesh D'Souza. 42 is the answer and now lets just fecking move on because there's nothing better.

Then stop watching them. Jeez.

Wha? Harris is very soft-spoken, D'Souza gets into a shouting frenzy damn near every time. Harris is fair and balanced, D'Souza'll beat the opponent with any twig or branch he can get his hands on. I don't see how you can compare the two.

That too... He also has the most annoying voice of any professional debater/lecturer I've heard... I'm sure Pinker would be up there if he were all shouty.

Of course. This is all just on the point of voice.

I'm going to go punch a pillow for a bit now, I've thought about D'Souza for more than 30 secs today.

edit: YES! The rat-face! omgsotrue!

You Noggies and your atheism.

Dawkins is a very good read, but I prefer Sam Harris and especially Christopher Hitchens. He was always awesome!
