Refs & VAR 2020/2021 Discussion

That's so the message is clear to the viewing public. Happens in cricket too. It isn't because the ref wants to be a superstar.
He needs to know when he’s being shown on the screen so that I know what message is clear?

He’s just looking at the screen. I’ll know the message when he blows his whistle and signals what’s to happen.

That Brighton disallowed goal is probably the worst referee decision all season.

Dunk - Can I take the free kick?

Ref - Yes

Brighton score, ref disallows it.

Ref - You need to wait for the whistle

Dunk - You said I could take it

Ref allows the goal and then presumably VAR intervene and disallows it again .

Not that simple - apparently dunk said 'can I take it' and the referee said yes but immediately stopped play because the wall wasn't ready, but Dunk had taken it too quickly.

Not hugely different to a penalty where there's been encroachment. Rare stuff to happen, but it would probably not be as much of a talking point if they didn't also miss two penalties etc.

I heard that the FA will not be charging Ole or Luke Shaw over the comments made after the Chelsea fiasco. The reason why was shocking. They were advised that THAT WOULDN’T WIN if they did charge them. Ergo, what Ole and Shaw said was true. It was handball and the Ref bottled it because he did want to in a controversy situation. Question, should United charge the. FA for cheating us out of two points potentiall?

It's transparency. They do it in rugby and cricket, two sports that do video refereeing well.

With these Aussie refs, it clearly isn't them being a superstar ref. Nothing about their demeanour suggests as much.

However, I can imagine Mike Dean and the like loving it.

Fair point about transparency because I know Mike dean said they only put the finger in the ear to let the crowd know what’s going on, they can hear without doing that, I just struggle to see why he needs to know when he’s on the screen or not, it’s not as if he’s doing anything interesting while on it.

City 2nd goal looks suspiciously onside..

Line got moved to make it off as decision was made. Was that shown on the UK feed?

Could the reason he didn’t give it possibly be that it might just be ”controversial “, given that United would be the beneficiaries? We know Sky etc would make a fecking meal out of it again, whilst totting up all the previous on their fecking abacus. The narrative is well and truly established since Klopp, Mou and fat Fwank have all had a go. Hardly a revelation, is it, as the ref well knows.
Nail on the head Sir. Let's not forget that for all its faults, VAR has seen United get many more justified penalty awards than they were getting before. Therefore, it has to some extent undone the ability of the on field referee to shaft us, by refusing us justified penalties, as happened before. Now of course Klopp, Mourinho and Lampard have seen their past advantage over us disappear, so they started bleating about it. The gullible English press picks up on it and the refs know to follow the line that they won't get slaughtered in the media by giving us nothing, but woe betide them if they do. Attwell was just toeing the easy route rather than reffing properly.

Fulham have just been completely done over for me. Lemina's arm is completely against his body, side on, and they get a goal disallowed for handball.

So they can disallow a goal for an accidental handball but can't award a pen for it?

Not to forget the ball was smashed into him from about a yard away, what on earth are you supposed to do with your arms anymore?

Defensive handballs and offensive handballs are indeed different. Thems the (stupid) rules.

Absolutely shocking decision or rule.

Another horrible, horrible interpretation from the “ref”.

Nah, it's a perfectly reasonable decision. The Laws of the Game are 100% clear that that goal is ruled out every single time.

The Laws are stupid, but you can't have referees deciding to only enforce the ones they agree with.

The ref didn't interpret anything, it's a straightforward call. If the ball hits his hand then the goal can't stand (hey, that rhymed).

I hate the way everyone celebrates, the manager is calling subs and setting up new tactics and then VAR pops up, A few years of this and I fully believe we’ll see less goal celebrations and the game will just die when the ball hits the net instead of come alive like we see now.

All of these strange illogical rules and the extremely fine margins are taking something away from the game for sure.

I'd personally be happy if they changed it to only overturn obvious mistakes. Don't ask me to define what 'obvious' would be. But that's what would see a return to normalcy but keep the fairness in.

You're analysing the play of the goal before celebrating to think of any reason they could rule it out. Its already dead to me.

I do that  My eyes are like super scanners all around the tv looking for a offside or something

Its like a checklist in your head.

  1. Offside ?
  2. Foul ?
  3. Handball ?
  4. Celebrate!

Stupid decision.

They need to get rid of the lines. Use a replay by all means but leave it to human interpretation.

Taking 5 minutes to decide whether an inch of someone’s shoulder is offside despite the rest of their body being easily online is ridiculous.

The game is fecked. When our ancestors found a pigs bladder and decided to kick it about for 90 minutes centuries ago, I dont think their idea for the future of the game was people who have never played the game completely ruining it from miles away on a little telly. I dont know how to fix the rules, but I know this isnt it.

Well they kicked it around for a lot longer than 90 minutes.

Imagine travelling 200 miles as a Chelsea fan.

Werner scores, doesn't even fecking celebrate

Then its ruled out for that.

People won't bother anymore.

I’d rather 4 linesmen and 5 refs on the field with whistles to what we’re seeing now

Thought it was a clear offside.

Imagine the opposite, a team playing against United and score such goal and lead 1-0 ? I'll be pissed.

The line they used showed potentially an inch of his shoulder was off.

It should never have been given as offside.

Richard keys keeps claiming its offside and too tight to rule out.
Say what you want about the rule but its there. Pundits making up rules and judging instances based on those rules is rife in football pundrity.
