Surprised this was only on one person's top spot. I always thought The Godfather 2 was considered the best one in the series...

Just loved the atmosphere, acting, cast, music and story. The revenge and ruthlessness arcs are something else.

Could rewatch this regularly. I think it is probably my first memory of a sequel that also goes back in time I watched this and the original at a pretty young age.

Parasite, Akira, Rocky, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men didn't make the finals.

Goodfellas, Matrix, Terminator 2 didn't make top 4.

This did... You fecking nerds

This encompasses all you need in a film imo. When you come up with a story your first thought is usually a grand adventure, a big task needs to be done, great characters meeting, bonding, betraying, etc...

It's a simple enough story told in a wonderful way.

And the ending is obvious from the moment they set off on said journey... It's a shambles Geoff!

I saw it the other day and it still holds up, unlike most of the other fantasy and scifi films I saw in my teens. The score, the cast, the action scenes, the beautiful shots... Perfection! I get that it's a simple story and that the villains aren't very nuanced, but sometimes it works and LOTR is the perfect example of this. I also love how dense the universe of Tolkien is, while still sticking to a soft magic system. That is a big part of the charm.

Just worked out the 3 that are to come. Don't know the order but all 3 are class.

But so why didn't it work for you? I'm not trying to criticize, obviously not everyone is going to share my preferences; I'm just curious what put you off.

I get bored with it I guess somewhere in the middle third. I'm not a huge fan of movies set in conflict generally (there are some exceptions - obvious stuff like SPR, 1917, Lone Survivor I liked, but others like Hurt Locker, this, not so much) so it's off on the wrong foot for me immediately - but I do like the opening scenes and much of the tone-setting in the first act. Just finishing Arrival, again, and then I'll go and try and watch AN again on projector (to see if that helps any)

Of the three, Fellowship is the easiest rewatch for me and so I'd always rank it highest, with a toss up between the other two depending on day of question. As an aside, it pisses me off that the extended versions are split over two discs in 4K though, so I don't watch those versions too often which is a shame.

Yeah, I can see this. As a kind of road (well, river), it also has a bit of a 'one damn thing after another' element to it. So if the setting doesn't grab you, I guess it becomes long rather quickly.

This, along with one of the top 2 movies, was on the most amount of lists overall.

I love this film. Don't really have a bad word to say about it.

Loved the structure not being chronological.

Alien was actually in the lead for the first half of the week when we were voting but Godfather smashed it towards the end, ending up on the most lists as well as the most number 1 picks.

Both great films and deserving top 2 although my preference is Alien because I'm a horror geek.

That's a very good top 5, well done folks.

That's it for the film edition of this.

I know the list isn't to everyone's taste but that's the price of democracy

Thank you to all that voted, this wouldn't work without you lot. Hope everyone at least had a bit of fun and maybe even got a few recommendations (like I did in the horror round)... That's what this is all about at the end of the day.

I'll be back next year with the TV Shows edition of this.

Thank you all!

Thanks @Dirty Schwein for the immense effort. It’s made me buy a few movies I’d never have considered as well, and a couple from this top 30 on top to fill out gaps in my collection. The final 5 were pretty much predictable though I am surprised (a little bit) by Pulp Fiction. Still good fun though each week.

Great work, @Dirty Schwein !

I'm delighted about RedCafe's love for Alien. Great film.

When I saw the comparatively small love for Shawshank and LOTR I knew that The Godfather was going to crush it. I have to give the film a rewatch because I don't remember anything bar a few famous lines.

Alien one place too low, but still pretty happy with the result.

My history with Alien goes way back to when I was a six year old boy. It was actually Aliens my dad watched with me at the time, without my mom knowing of course. The movie left me so terrified that I only slept with lights on for about half a year afterwards. Nevertheless, my love for the Alien movies was born. Needless to say, my mom was absolutely livid.

What a masterpiece the Alien is. The dense atmosphere and sense of threat and menace it creates without showing much of the creature is unparalleled in my opinion (Jaws does this very well, too. But everyone knows what a fecking shark looks like). Don't think any movie before Alien managed to bring a SciFi creature into the mainstream mindset like this. When Alien released, Darth Vader was still a dude in a suit without much backstory. Such an iconic and incredibly well done design.

Aliens is a goat movie as well, the third one is decent and the fourth one terrible. Prometheus and Covenant are alright but feel somewhat disconnected from the older ones.

Thanks for all the time and effort you’ve put in. Was the first thread I looked for each Monday morning. Look forward to the next.

Thanks for all the effort @Dirty Schwein

Looking forward to spending months on categories, arguing and then ultimately picking between The Wire and The Sopranos in the TV one.

I think the Godfather is a solid number one. Wouldn’t be my choice, but can’t argue with it. Definitely one of the few 10/10 films out there.

Now that we’re done, I’d like to thank @Dirty Schwein for his effort with all this. It was a lot of fun and brought on some great discussions. Great work. Personally my caf Highlight for the year.

I'm sure my esteemed movie critic @Bilbo will agree that few scenes in cinematic history can rival the following:

Butch fetches watch, shoots Vincent, drives over Marsellus, meets the Gimp, and escapes!

This movie is such a tease.

Not too bad, the ones I've not seen and will make an effort to are only

9. Apocalypse Now

18. 12 Angry Men

23. Old Boy
