Round 8 is done! There were a total of 84 films that got votes and your top 5 were:

Blade Runner
The Matrix
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Interstellar

Blade Runner and The Matrix had the same amount of votes but Blade Runner won due to the higher Metacritic score. Also, @hellhunter good effort with the Aliens push... didn't make top 5 but placed high enough for a second chance in the resurrection round.

Onto the next round!

Each Monday, I will set up a new round for the contest.

Each round will represent a different genre of film (I have tried to include all the big genres).

The genres are below (BOLDED IS THE CURRENT ROUND FOR THIS THREAD):

Round 1 - Action & Adventure
Round 2 - War & Western
Round 3 - Fantasy & Superhero
Round 4 - Crime & Noir
Round 5 - Comedy & Romance
Round 6 - Drama
Round 7 - Horror
Round 8 - Sci-Fi
Round 9 - Thriller & Mystery
Round 10 - Animation, Musicals & Experimental
Round 11 - Resurrection (Bonus Round)
Round 12 - The Knockout Round
Round 13 - The Finals

For each round, please list your top 5 movies from the genre in list view.

Please do this by Friday 11:59pm GMT (please stick to this as last time people kept voting late and that causes me massive headaches on the weekends).

5th = 2 pts, 4th = 4 pts, 3rd = 6 pts, 2nd = 8 pts, 1st = 10 pts.

The top 5 movies from each round will go through to the knockouts.

In the event of a tie, I will refer to their Metacritic scores.

I know movie genres cross over (Alien could be horror or sci-fi) so feel free to consider that when voting but don't be an idiot and vote Alien as a comedy or musical.

If you have voted, then changed your vote, please quote your original list and then post your new list and let me know by tagging me, otherwise I may miss your vote by accident.

I will try to start each new round on the Monday after a vote round has finished.

At the opening post of each round, I will put in the results from the previous round and start the voting of the current round.

Once we have gone through the 11 rounds, there will be a randomized UCL-style knockouts round (which people asked for last time).

Then we head into the final round with 30 movies on the shortlist.

Then once that voting is done, I will post the top 30 in order from last to first and crown the overall winner.

I know this is probably not the BEST way but I doubt there is a BEST way to do this!

Remember, I have 2 kids and a full time job so there may be times where I miss deadlines or post later than anticipated. Apologies in advance.

I hope this is fun and you guys enjoy it

If a foreign film don't make it through this round then I am labelling RedCafe as racist!

1. The Silence of the Lambs
2. Oldboy (2003)
3. Nightcrawler
4. Shutter Island
5. Coherence

Not sure if Oldboy and Nightcrawler are a good fit, I think they just about count as thrillers.

1. Parasite
2. Oldboy
3. Nightcrawler
4. Mystic River
5. American Psycho

Subject to change once people post other films I forgot about.

  1. Sicario
  2. Silence of the Lambs
  3. Collateral
  4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009-original Swedish)
  5. Memento

1. Oldboy (2003)
2. The secret on their eyes (2009)
3. The Prestige
4. Memento
5. Parasite

1. No Country for Old Men
2. Silence of the Lambs
3. Parasite
4. Oldboy (2003)

Off the top of my head

Probably one of the hardest rounds for me, almost impossible to whittle down to 5

1. Seven
2. Fargo
3. Vertigo
4. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
5. Parasite

@Vidyoyo - Picnic at hanging rock, one of the most haunting films ever. Beautiful stuff. Nice choice.

1) The Lives of Others
2) Rear Window
3) Shutter Island
4) The Prestige
5) Misery

1 - Rear Window
2 - Mulholland Drive
3 - Parasite
4 - The Conversation
5 - The Vanishing

Can't believe Interstellar beat out 2001, that's a crime against Sci-Fi.

1. Seven
2. The Prestige
3. No Country For Old Men
4. Silence Of The Lambs
5. Shutter Island

Thriller and mystery? This round is tailor-made for South Korean cinema.

1. Oldboy
2. Burning
3. Parasite
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. Memories of Murder

Tough round again! Honorable mentions to The Silence of the Lambs and Misery. You could make an argument for Nightcrawler as well.

1. Se7en
2. No Country for Old Men
3. The Silence of the Lambs
4. Prisoners
5. Sicario

I thought Fight Club was going to show up in a category eventually but seemingly not....

I don't think many have seen my number 4 Forgotten. It's a Korean thriller and a really fun movie.

Another one very close to my list. Denis Villeneuve is my favourite contemporary director. Midas touch.

Same. Prisoners, Sicario, Dune, Blade Runner: 2049, Arrival. So many great films. Even Enemy, while probably a bit heavy on the symbolism for my taste, was quite a well-crafted movie.

An unfortunate case of falling in between several genres (crime, drama, thriller, perhaps even action) without matching any of them perfectly. I hadn't actually considered it for this round, but thriller is probably the best fit.

Much as I love Interstellar, seeing it beat 2001 (the GOD of sci-fi) is a tough one.

There is a very big overlap between IMDb Top 250 and the results from these threads. I've always thought that IMDb represents the film tastes of most people. It hits the sweet spot between film nerds and the people who can count the number of films they've seen on one hand.

Films by Coppola, Scorcese, Tarantino and Nolan will dominate the list. Films like Seven, Fight Club, Shawshank, Matrix and the LOTR trilogy are also sure to make it far.

Especially since it looked like Interstellar took a lot of inspiration from 2001.
I've always credited it as 2001 for this generation. I love both but 2001 is the king. What I was glued to while my mates were wrapped up watching Luke, Leia and Vader bullshit.

His visual style is literally second to none. He takes realism to new heights and is one of the very few that knows exactly how CGI should be used.

This is a fantastic list.

1. Blue Velvet
2. French Connection
3. Sorcerer
4. Three Days of the Condor
5. Silence of the Lambs

North by Northwest
Old Boy
Mulholland Drive
Burning or Parasite
Coup de Torchon or Memories of Murder

Hm: only god forgives, I saw the devil, coin locker girl, inherent vice, to live and die in la, and multiple Hitchcock and Villanueve films

LA Confidential is a good one! I personally have a soft spot for American Gigolo, mostly the style, score and of course Richard Gere.

So Christopher Nolan is going to have 2 films in the final round and there will be no films by Andrei Tarkovsky.
