Onto the next round!

Each Monday, I will set up a new round for the contest.

Each round will represent a different genre of film (I have tried to include all the big genres).

The genres are below (BOLDED IS THE CURRENT ROUND FOR THIS THREAD):

Round 1 - Action & Adventure
Round 2 - War & Western
Round 3 - Fantasy & Superhero
Round 4 - Crime & Noir
Round 5 - Comedy & Romance
Round 6 - Drama
Round 7 - Horror
Round 8 - Sci-Fi
Round 9 - Thriller & Mystery
Round 10 - Animation
Round 11 - The Knockout Round
Round 12 - The Finals

For each round, please list your top 5 movies from the genre in list view.

Please do this by Friday 11:59pm GMT (please stick to this as last time people kept voting late and that causes me massive headaches on the weekends).

5th = 2 pts, 4th = 4 pts, 3rd = 6 pts, 2nd = 8 pts, 1st = 10 pts.

The top 5 movies from each round will go through to the knockouts.

In the event of a tie, I will refer to their Metacritic scores.

I know movie genres cross over (Alien could be horror or sci-fi) so feel free to consider that when voting but don't be an idiot and vote Alien as a comedy or musical.

If you have voted, then changed your vote, please quote your original list and then post your new list and let me know by tagging me, otherwise I may miss your vote by accident.

I will try to start each new round on the Monday after a vote round has finished.

At the opening post of each round, I will put in the results from the previous round and start the voting of the current round.

Once we have gone through the 10 rounds, there will be a randomized UCL-style knockouts round (which people asked for last time).

Then we head into the final round with 25 movies on the shortlist.

Then once that voting is done, I will post the top 25 in order from last to first and crown the overall winner.

I know this is probably not the BEST way but I doubt there is a BEST way to do this!

Remember, I have 2 kids and a full time job so there may be times where I miss deadlines or post later than anticipated. Apologies in advance.

I hope this is fun and you guys enjoy it :D

No Sergio Leone in the Western category

Brazil is a great film but is it a fantasy movie?

I went back and forth over it but it's got a lot of fantasy elements - which is par for the course with Gilliam.

Thing is too, our perspective of fantasy has changed since mass adoption of CGI. You could theoretically argue few movies from before the 90s meet the threshold for what counts as a fantasy movie now, which I think is a poor way of looking at it.

I was considering Spirted Away but Brazil I'm not too sure about.

Fair enough, it's a bit of a reach but it's hard to define what Brazil is technically - dystopian for sure but that's not a category we have so fantasy seems the closest?

Agree about Spirited Away but I'll putting a few ghibli movies in the animated category so didn't want to use it twice.

1. The Seventh Seal
2. The Double Life of Veronique
3. Wings of Desire
4. Being John Malkovich
5. It's a Wonderful Life

1. Lord of the Rings (all three of them, I class as one movie)
2. Pans Labyrinth
3. Spiderman 2 (Sam Raimi 2004 - 100% perfect superhero flick)
4. A Monster Calls
5. Field of Dreams

1. Fellowship of the Ring
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Ugetsu Monogatari
4. Logan
5. Star Wars (1977)
1. The Seventh Seal
2. The Double Life of Veronique
3. Wings of Desire
4. Being John Malkovich
5. It's a Wonderful Life

I see you two also googled best fantasy movies for inspiration :D

I really wasn't sure about Veronique myself but could see it being magical realism.

Hmmm...comedy? Sc fi? Yeah it's a difficult one but so are the likes of Seventh Seal, Being John Malkovich et al. hard to define as well. Spirted Away is probably an animation before fantasy, so basically I'm confused now.

  1. LOTR Fellowship of the Ring (or all 3 of them)
  2. Pan's Labyrinth
  3. The Green Knight
  4. Thor: Ragnarick
  5. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Honorable mention to Hentai Kamen

It's extremely difficult to compare fantasy to superhero stuff, especially given how wide fantasy genre can be interpreted, I'd certainly split the two :(

3. Ugetsu Monogatari
Nice one!

2. The Empire Strikes Back
5. Star Wars (1977)
4. Star Wars: A New Hope
Probably Sci-Fi?

  1. The Princess Bride
  2. Batman Begins
  3. Superman 2
  4. LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
  5. Avengers: Infinity War

Don't put Star Wars in this category ffs.

I'll save Groundhog Day and maybe Ghostbusters for comedy shall I?

1- The Dark Knight
2- Infinity War
3- Endgame
4- Batman Returns
5- Guardians of the Galaxy
Your are clearly not reading the rules

Firstly last round you voted after the deadline and gave me a headache to re-tally.

Now you put your number 1 as a film that has already got through via a previous round! I would change that.
Struggled here massively:

1. Brazil
2. Jurassic Park
3. Gremlins
4. Star Wars: A New Hope
5. Super Mario Bros
Are you fecking kidding me?

Probably Sci-Fi?
Maybe but then Dark Knight is also Superhero I guess :)

Empire is such a good film I had to put it in somewhere

You are correct though looking again I will amend.

Yeah, Veronique is a borderline case.

I also thought about including The Tree of Life.

  1. LOTR Fellowship of the Ring (or all 3 of them)
  2. Pan's Labyrinth
  3. The Dark Knight
  4. The Green Knight
  5. Thor: Ragnarick

Probably Sci-Fi?
The Dark Knight has already made it through.

I feel I will be telling this to people all week :(

Tough one..

Infinity War
LOTR - Fellowship of the Ring
Captain America:Winter Soldier
The Mummy
Labyrinth

I always preferred Batman Begins. Think they got progressively worse, but The Dark Knight is on a pedestal more because of that Heath Ledger performance.
Yeah absolutely, no question Heath Ledger is fantastic in it, but that's pretty much the only thing standing out for me. Also preferred Batman Begins

LOTR Fellowship
Batman Begins
Spiderman 2
Spiderman into the Spider Verse
Superman

Are you fecking kidding me?

No way. Super Mario Bros is a terrible movie objectively but brilliant because it's everything that modern day superhero films aren't.

It's rough and ready, with zero polish and no cohesion. A kitsch masterpiece with an unforgettable performance by Dennis Hopper as King Koopa (back when he went by that nomenclature).

You'd never, not in a million CEO's nightmares, see a popular IP made into a movie like that these days.

  1. Ghostbusters
  2. Batman Begins
  3. Life of Pi
  4. Jurassic Park
  5. Labyrinth
One of the tougher rounds for me due to not being a huge fan of the genres. Probably reflects in my choices.
