Music RedCafe's Favourite Albums Of All Time Contest (Round 2)

One step closer, crawling, a place for my head

Yeah I like those but my favourites are Papercut and Points of Authority. In The End is obviously also a banger but overplayed. It's a really good album.

DS in this contest

This is so true

This is why I nearly decided against doing it this year.

Well you're just the host so it doesn't matter too much. Your votes count just as much as anyone else's.

Would you do a song one after? Could be difficult for people but would be interested in the results.

Nah we're going back to gaming next year but a complete different format. We don't need to see what's the favourite game as we've established that and I doubt much has changed over 4 years. You'll enjoy the new format.

1. Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
2. Reggatta de Blanc - The Police
3. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
4. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
5. Outlandos d'Armour - The Police

Had to choose between Sex Pistols and The Police for that last slot. Really, really tough decision.

Hybrid Theory is a decent album with three great tracks. But it's not close to a decade topper. The other two, well. We all have our quirks don't we.
Every song Hybrid Theory is an absolute banger and probably the best album of the 00s

I've listened to that album so many times. Oh my god. I've got core memories flooding back of me listening to that album and playing Perfect Dark on my N64. Feck.

Yes lads! Let's get it to the final!

Hybrid Theory will have to be in there for that decade, for the number of hours I must have listened to those songs. Same with the Marshall Mathers LP

This is why I always said you're my dude.

I once went to a Craig David concert with a broken leg in a cast, a fight broke out between this old man and a bunch of builders who were trying to enjoy the concert. They bumped into me and I went flying to the ground and sprained my wrist. Hardcore!
 Fecking hell. Who fights at a Craig David concert - the man is just pure vibes. (I imagine, I don't know him that much in reality).

That'll be a weak decade if Linkin Park get through.

I 100% agree with you.

I know right? Mental

Also! Is Ziggy Stardust, Rise of Ziggy Stardust etc all the same album?

There's more than 5, which should be enough to kill off the idea of it reaching the next round (over the likes of Low and Highway 61 Revisited lmao)

They are yeah. And 'spiders from mars' would also be the same album, if anyone was awkward enough to call it that.

Love The Police and nearly included one. Just feel like they did quite a few very good albums but not one mega album.

I can get what you mean, although I would personally class both as mega albums, especially Reggatta de Blanc. I'm looking at the tracklisting now and I can't help but think "that's a great tune...and that's another...and that one, too." I fecking love it. Message in a bottle as the opener is just insane. What a song. It's an album that's stood up well against the test of time, although I will concede that I think that there are others from that period which could be seen as more influential.

Always thought Zenyatta was a brilliant follow up to Regatta. One for the 80s...

I think I would go with Ghost in the Machine as my favorite Police albums, but I would agree that they're all great (except Outlandos: not a huge fan of that one), but never 'all-time-great': there's just little bits of lesser quality on all of them. I mean, again, all great - but not top 5 of the decade material for me.

It's really fun what Sting did with some lesser known Police songs on his first live album btw (Bring on the Night). Highly recommended, one of my favorite live albums.

Doing top 5s of pretty much anything you like is tough as there’ll always be ones you have to leave out.

Love RdB but might’ve gone Outlandos d'Amour as as good i.m.o. and has “So Lonely” on it. Fantastic song.

Another brilliant album. Such a good band. I love what they each bring individually and how their parts fit cohesively. Some may look at their albums and wonder if they could have got a few more out, but I often admire bands or artists who have a smaller catalogue. It's far easier for new listeners to get into the band and hear absolutely everything. It's tougher these days when you've got bands like Iron Maiden (who I also love) who have 17 albums, Black Sabbath with 19, and the likes of Prince who did 30+ and it must be harder for younger or newer listeners to know where to start. There's something quite nice about knowing that you can listen to a band and know all of their albums inside out. Every riff, every hook, every fill, the lot.

Yeah awesome band for 4 albums, but I think Synchronicity was an album too far and by all accounts the band had fallen apart by then.

I love Synchronicity!

But I do think it's good they stopped there. They had rather moved away from the original punk-ish spirit of the band and it's probably more interesting that they went off to pursue their other musical interests at that point. Sting's first solo albums are amazing.

I was even considering going Station to Station, but went with the more popular one as a sort of tactical vote. Some of these artists in the 60s and 70s have a crazy number of great albums in such a short period.

I'd be up for this, but would prefer one of the Berlin trilogy of albums. Station to Station might be a good compromise.
Bryter Layter - Nick Drake
After the Goldrush - Neil Young
The Last Waltz - The Band
Hunky Dory - David Bowie
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

Decided to go for one per artist otherwise it would have just been two Nick Drake and Three Neil Young albums.

I love Station To Station, it's the sound of cocaine-fueled madness. I will switch to StS, and present a unified front against the forces of darkness. Tactics! Mind games!

Hall of the mountain grill is ace as well as warrior on the edge of time, quark, strangeness and charm and X in search of space and Space Ritual was a superb live album. They banged some class albums out but love Doremi. The Wall and Wish you were here are brilliant but Dark side of the moon is just so complete.
Space Ritual is pretty insane for a live album. All 4 of those albums you listed are really good. They had an incredibly productive streak over a short period of time. I came to teh Hawkwind tent very, very late in the game, way after punk rock and post punk, and since I know of only one person in real life who likes them, it's been kind of a private enjoyment. Good to meet another fan!

I like Synchronicity too. I think that's the album Sting's balls finally descended and his vocal style changed for the better.

I kid, I kid! Sting is a great singer (to poop on)!
