Music RedCafe's Favourite Albums Of All Time Contest (Round 2)

So yous just know all albums you like from these eras and can recall them like that? Or do you somehow get an overview of potential candidates?
I actually have a list. I once listened to every album on the list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die and gave every one a rating from 1-10.

As it turns out, I remembered I had the same list and started the same 'challenge'. Only I got to the mid 70s and stopped cause a lot of it was dross, so then I started listening randomly, but in the end it all fizzled out. Decent starting point though

I think there was even a thread on here about the challenge. I think I managed to finish the list in less than six months. It was great for me, despite the dross, because I found quite a few acts I wouldn’t have given a chance otherwise.

  1. Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express
  2. Led Zeppelin - IV
  3. The Clash - London Calling
  4. Can - Ege Bamyası
  5. Pink Floyd - The Wall

Hard to pink just one of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I could probably pick 3-4 from each group but I wanted to limit to just one from a group.

But the rules are arbitrary. Like round 1 has no albums from earlier than the 60s, will have the least engagement in terms of number of votes and smallest spread of albums.

I dunno if you need 34 albums for the final but why not just have 5 from each decade and have x number of spots for the albums who didnt finish top 5 with the highest votes, from any decade. That's the only objective way to do it.
This is a good point to be fair.

The original plan was to get to 30, which means 5 per round but felt to extend the two rounds that go beyond a decade.

What I can do is 5 per round. Or I can do 5 per round and add an additional round where 6&7 from each round compete for the final 5 spots, leading to a final of 35.

1. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
2. Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
3. The Eagles - Hotel California
4. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
5. Kiss - Alive

Rules have been updated:

- 5 albums reach the final per round.
- Resurrection Round has been added, this will have the 6th & 7th placed albums from each round compete, with the top 5 progressing to the final.
- Anymore jip from Hobbers & Alto will result in them getting banned from the contest.
- I know I can't get Craig David to the final so please help me out in the 00s round and get Hybrid Theory to the final.

1 - Another Green World (Brian Eno)
2 - Low (David Bowie)
3 - Heroes (David Bowie)
4 - Here Come the Warm Jets (Brian Eno)
5 - Rumours (Fleetwood Mac)

Pasting from previous thread.
I'm not a big fan of Eno, but recently I was reading David Byrne's book and he mentioned working with him a lot. After reading a chapter, I had a dream that I met Eno at an event and we initially got on really well, but he became increasingly annoyed and exasperated with me.

This was on account of dream-Eno having suffered from a wasting disease that meant his head was a regular size, but his body had shrunken down to 20% of its previous size, rendering the bald electronic music pioneer extremely top-heavy. And I kept accidentally over-balancing him and bashing his aging face on the floor.

At first, he was very nice about the situation in the face of my heartfelt apologies, but after the third or fourth time, he ended our conversation and went to speak to someone a bit more careful around him.

I think my top 70s albums are:

1: Big Star: Third
2: Neil Young: Tonight's the Night
3: Ramones: Leave Home
4: Velvet Underground: Loaded
5: Nick Drake: Bryter Layter

On another day, I might have said either of the other two Big Star albums, Zuma or On The Beach by Young, and Pink Moon by Nick Drake.

Honorable mentions to Stooges Raw Power, Suicide's self titled debut, New York Dolls' debut, Kraftwerk's Man Machine, MC5's Back In The USA, John Cale's Paris 1919 and Fear, Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate, The Clash's London Calling, Neu and Neu 2, and absolutely loads of other stuff people have already posted here.

@Dirty Schwein , made some adjustments. We should have 10 choices for the 70s!

@Dirty Schwein updated this list 10/31 your time.

@Dirty Schwein - changed choice 5, and re-ordered the list.

You could do but it'd be a lot less work for you if you just ranked the 6 and 7th placed each round altogether at the end by number of votes they got in their rounds. Because that is still a measure of their popularity.

Nah, a 6th place song in the 80s may have far less votes than the same from the 60s simply because there's more good albums in the 80s so the votes were spread thinner.

Also, that could lead to tactical voting.

The fairer way is to have all 6th and 7th battle it out, despite that being extra work on my end.

70s is peak prog for me, so that's my list settled:

1. Yes - Close to the Edge
2. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
3. King Crimson - Red
4. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus
5. Harmonium - Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison

Update my list, @Dirty Schwein (replaced #5).

:annoyed:
:nono:

1. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan
2. Breakfast In America - Supertramp
3. Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie Wonder
4. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
5. The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd

Happy to see Leave Home do well. I always got the impression people preferred the first and third Ramones albums over it.

1970s:
Physical Graffiti-Led Zeppelin
Exile on Main St - Rolling Stones
Machine Head-Deep Purple
Wish You Were Here- Pink Floyd
Fragile-Yes

The first is usually the one that gets the nod in best of lists as it's the more influential/groundbreaking album, but Leave Home is the better listen. Same sound, better collection of songs, better recorded.

Bryter Layter - Nick Drake
After the Goldrush - Neil Young
The Last Waltz - The Band
Hunky Dory - David Bowie
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

Decided to go for one per artist otherwise it would have just been two Nick Drake and Three Neil Young albums.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
Eagles - Hotel California
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Dire Straits - Dire Straits

Is that your favorite DS album? I quite like them, but I think I'd actually rate that album lowest (well, lowest of a string of good albums, I do like it).

The 70s list is brutal. It’s hard to pick 5 genres from that decade, let alone 5 best albums. Had to completely ignore Bowie, Eno, Springsteen, Can, Yes, Rush, The Who, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, AC DC, Thin Lizzy, Neu!, Queen, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and so many more!

1. Never Mind the Bollocks - The Sex Pistols
2. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
3. Doremi Fasol Latido - Hawkwind
4. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie
5. Parallel Lines - Blondie

Punk next to Pink Floyd - beautiful! I might have some pink in my 2000s list also.

I always thought it was funny that Lydon had an 'I hate Pink Floyd's t-shirt. Their music isn't complex and very anti-capitalist - ELP would have been a much better band to pick on!

Misfits - Walk Among Us
Beastie Boys (fecking hard) - Ill Communication
Van Halen = Jump
Face to Face - Dont Turn Away
Dr Dre - The Chronic
Another one who had really wild 70s.

There were some great punk albums late 70s the Clash first album, London calling, Inflammable material, Machine gun etiquette, but Never mind the Bollocks is different class, great songs right through, great production that stands up today. Dark side of the Moon is a masterpiece.
