Redcafe Top 100 Movies Discussion and Prep

I will add for war films, the longest day, Bridge over the river Kwai, All quiet on the western front, Malicks the thin red line, Tora Tora Tora, The Battle of Britain and the Battle of the bulge.

In fact there's so many old war films that could be watched. One that definetly needs to be watched is Eastwoods Letters from Iwo Jima, it's twin film flags of our fathers can be ignored.

All quiet on the western front is a masterpiece. Surprised it isn't higher on most lists, also, as far as war films go, Saving Private Ryan is another that had several really amazing moments.

Saving Private Ryan is an incredible film and would be in my top 10 war films.

You still need to delete your quotes Addz, now lets just hope that none of the panel know their history of the battle of Waterloo either.

Hehe, I was only joking :D it's less a of a spoiler than saying Napoleon surrenders at the end.

If that spoils the film it's not compiling a list of movies they need to concern themselves with, it's elementary history.

I hope the committee is unanimous in excluding anything associated with M Night Shyamalan.

The only film I can by him that I can come close to entertaining is the Sixth Sense, and that would not make my list.

I cannot fathom how he continues to receive financial backing for his pictures.

Thought the sixth sense was a very good film myself.

I'm going to watch one tonight. Any recommendations? Give me something that would almost certainly make it your lists but I might not have seen.

Because they all make a killing at the box office, so blame the public. Even the Happening, generally considered one of the worst films in the history of film ever (at least by me) was a huge financial success.

The Battle of Algiers is a good one, which remains topical in these days of uprising in Arab countries.

I guess you're right.

I've been duped into watching his films at the cinema including The Happening. It was only then I realised it was by him and knew that I'd regret losing the next few hours of my life.

The amazing thing about MNS is that he has a very powerful fan base who act as a secondary PR machine for all of his films. For The Happening they spent a considerable amount of time putting out the word that the film was actually an intelligent pastiche of B movie films! Not to invoke Godwin's Law but such blind faith is how Hitler came to power!

Are we doing this in any kind of order?...Could I just throw out La Haine, City of God & Infernal Affairs from the commercial end of the foreign market. Do I need to justify this in any way?

You dont need to justify your choices but they need to be in order in your final list. You should use this thread to pick up recommendations and watch a shed load of movie in the coming months.

Everyone should watch Metropolis, it's not really a hard watch as you'd might expect. Timeless masterpiece.

This is true, it's not a hard watch. I'd suggest watching something that contains elements of silent films in it (e.g Rashomon) before as an introduction to it, rather than jumping straight into a silent film, though. Obviously everyone on this list will have seen numerous movies of this ilk, but for people reading the thread and thinking about watching it.

Nosferatu was very good too, not in the same league as Metropolis but well worth a watch (if only for Shreck's excellent, if short, performance).

Safety Last is my recommendation for the silent film.

I prefer Unbreakable to The Sixth Sense. Neither of them come close to being masterpieces, but I like the atmosphere in Unbreakable.

I'm not in the film rating posse but Battle of Algiers is solid.

Where do you guys think Transformers 2 will rank?

Should comfortably make the top 10 based solely on Shia's career best performance. Might even crack the top 5 if you take into account its influence on future films.

Silent film: Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc

Strongly recommend Yojimbo and, Sanjuro.

If anyone can recommend any other works by Kurosawa, i'll be sure to put them on my list.

yes I can reommend some films by Kurosawa, all of them.

I've got Ikiru, Seven Samurai and Ran all lined up to watch in the next couple of days so I'd suggest you have a look at any of them. Will add Yojimbo and Sanjuro to the list then.

Obviously Rashomon's a must-watch.
