Redcafe Top 100 Movies Discussion and Prep

Why haven't Datura, Duffer, Mexos, UberScholes and Mockney got back to us?

And has anyone been missed out? If you feel you've been overlooked post a RC Top 100 watched list.

I don't think i'd really be much use for this sort of thing. I remember the last top 100 on here and i'd only seen about half if memory serves.

I thought you were a film buffer, Mr Duffer? How many of the top ten have you seen? Post a watched list. Do it. Do it.

Do it.

I think the Emerald Forest may make my list, towards the bottom, but nontheless and a fantastic film.

I guess i've seen more than I thought (those in bold I have NOT seen).

A lot of the foreign language films have passed me by, not because I don't enjoy them but I guess because they have not been on telly.

I'd consider myself a film fan, rather than a fully blown "buff". I really enjoy watching films of all genres but don't really get much of a kick out of dissecting why they are enjoyable.

Well, you're on the committee. Mehro, can you added Duffer's name to the list?

Ta.

So do I have to make a list or something?

Edit: severe lack of some great british films in that list as well.

A film barely mentioned last time and that didn't make the final list. The first film I will be championing is:

King Kong (1933) - One of the finest adventures and a truly groundbreaking film. The mix of rear and miniature projection techniques they developed, laid a blueprint for every large scale monster film that came between Kong and CGI. Even today with computer generated beasties I don't think anything comes close to the physical awe and scale of some of the scenes. The first shot of the Stegosaurus charging the audience holds up against anything a computer can produce. The creature effects that combine large set animatronics, with small set stop-motion provide a raw physical beauty to the film that you just don't see anymore. Shorn of all sentimentality - only splashed on in later film outings - Kong is a brute, with his primal instincts and lustful mannerisms but his exploitation and eventual death is no less tragic. The final scenes atop the Empire State speak for themselves. Truly The Eighth Wonder of the World.

See, this is were I get confused by the criteria we're marking these films on. Are we doing it from cultural influence or weter they ar ejust plain good films? I would take many of Harryhausens films over the old kongster.

In my opinion all Ray Harryhausen's films are noticeable firstly for their masterful puppetry and effects. Very few have masterful plotting, character development or direction. Beast from 20 000 fathoms would probably be my personal favourite but the special effects aside, it's monster schlock. If we want 100 greatest film scenes then Ray's Skeletons and his Medusa would make my list but top films? not for me.

As for criteria, I'm still unsure of the exact balance people are after. Which is partly why I mentioned King Kong first. On every level, from influence and spectacle, to plain fun and enjoyment I believe it to be a masterpiece.

smh including Mockney only means Transformers 2 is now likely to get a vote.

You should consider everything.

so I just have to list films and argue for them, sounds easy enough, the only Nolan film that should have a shout in is the Prestige. Well as long as a Matter of life or death, 12 angry men, Kikujiro, Princess Mononoke, Salo, City of god and Raiders of the lost ark are included I'm game.

yet it was badly acted and the dialogue was a bit... well crap.

Just wondering, how many females are in on this.

exactly. The only film thats gven me that reaction.

I'm suprised you managed to sit through it.

Kikujiro is a neat film. I think I'll have at least one Kitano film on my list. I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time a couple of months ago, and it's a decent film but not really top 100 material imo. I even liked the one where Sean Connery plays his dad more.

I wonder wether kids films will make it in. Raiders is top 100 material.

Can I still have a shot at this? I intimated my desire to take part in the other thread. I INTIMATED!

*flashbacks of not being picked during lunchtime football in school*

Post your RC Top 100 watched list, De Selby.

And Mehrogay, can you add Datura to the list?

Very overrated.

Great performance, but it was still boring. Tom Hardy gave just as good a performance in Bronson and the film wasn't as dull, but you'd never find that in a top 10 anywhere.

Right I want some suggestions, I've seen every film in that list on the on the other thread and theres a few that won't be going into my list. So please people give me something to blow me away. I also want various genres, including horror, childrens and romance.

Over hyped i find, raging bull is also dull.

Raging Bull I agree drags a bit. I'm not a huge fan of Scorsese actually. I find a lot of his films are overrated. Still mostly great films, but overrated. He hasn't made a "great" film since Goodfellas either IMO.

Godfather II is a masterpiece, but it's overrated in the sense that a lot of people seem to place it above the original which is far superior. In the first Al changes dramatically and Marlon gets to act strong, intimidating, angry, weak, emotional, dead, etc, whereas in II both Al & Bobby spend the whole time being broodingly tough. John Cazale is the real stand out in that one.

I also find Serpico overrated. Or at the very least dated. But speaking of films with Al & Cazale, Dog Day will definitely get in my 100. Al's best work IMO.
