Redcafe Rocket League Gold Cup | "PC & PS4 Players, Sign up now!"

Right...

I am conscious of the need to keep the ball moving. So I have decided to fold up Group E and just move onto the next round.

I did an FA Cup style draw which I meant to record but didnt, and have come up with the following groups:
IRDp1ME.png

I'll make group thread up later.

The three best group winners were the number 1 seeds
The 2 best runners up and the other group winner were the number 2 seeds.
Players from the same group shouldnt be in the same group now.

3rd placed teams from the previous round will enter if anyone drops out.

Some interesting fachts about the first four groups:

  • In 3 of the 4 groups, the player in last place going into game 3, qualified.
  • In every group, a player just needed to keep the score low in the last match to qualify, but failed.
  • In 3 of the 4 groups, one player won all three matches.
  • rcoobc was the only player to go out after winning two matches
  • Only 1 player who failed to qualify (lookingforeric), didn't go out on goal difference.
  • No matches went to extra time.

Has anyone else from another group started their matches, or has this stalled for now?

Group 2-B - Grylte fails to strike
Not 2B 4Grylte

"That bicycle own goal was spectacular" - RedMist99
It was never going to be easy for Grylte. In the first round he had helped knockout Blatzo and Eriku, scoring 4 individual goals in the process but playing on 4G internet, he would later say that perhaps he should have turned off facebook messenger. Regardless, this would be the stage were Grylte was found out.

The first match ended with Big-Red scoring 4 times to a solitary reply, giving both he and RedMist a commanding victory to take into the next round

RedMist99 & Big-Red 4-1 Grylte & DatIrishFella

uiPLosT.png

In the second match, both Grylte and DatIrishFella needed a win to boost their confidence after a heavy loss to the two seeded players.

RedMist99 came into the match as number 1 seed, and he would begin to show it here with three individual goals although his teammate DatIrishFella would outshine him slightly with 4 of his own.

This loss put Grylte on the verge of elimiation, and moved Big-Red into third place with a negative 1 goal difference. RedMist on the other hand was sitting pretty, 3 points and 6 team goals ahead of his closest rival.

This result also meant that Big-Red and RedMist couldn't both go through in the automatic places.

RedMist99 & DatIrishFella 7-3 Big-Red & Grylte

g19kFNv.png

Going into the final match, Big-Red needed to reverse the 4 goal deficit from the previous game, whilst Grylte needed to over come a 3 goal deficit, but he was alongside RedMist who had won both previous games.

Perhaps demoralised, Grylte found the going tough, as he and RedMist failed to strike up a partnership. Big-Red scored 4 goals for second time in this group, as he and DatIrishFella produced an excellent display of teamwork. It must have been a cagey affair, as a single goal either way would have been enough to swing it. In the end, Big-Red would finish second on away goals, whilst DatIrishFella, an unknown who was given a bye to the second round, finished top of the group.

For the second group in a row Big-Red would finish in second place on Team Goal Difference. RedMist99 will feel aggrieved, but with 6 points, may have done enough to go through as a best third placed player.

RedMist99 & Grylte 1-5 Big-Red & DatIrishFella

Congratulations to Big-Red and RedMist99 for qualifying for the second round.

Congratulations to DatIrishFella for qualifying as group winner!

Group 2-C - Slops Shocked but Safe
7 Goals for Razvan Not Enough

"was feeling pretty good after the first game before the crushing second" - Slops
It's hard to know what conclusions to draw from the conclusion of this group, except perhaps Slops finally met his match in EireLemon. And that Razvan was very, very unlucky.

Slops and EireLemon would go into this group as the two seeds, and they would emerge from it the victors, but this was not as simple as it appeared.

In the first match, Slops and Eirelemon would prove irresistable. 4 goals for slops and 2 for Eirelemon without reply put Razvan and Henry to the sword, and must have left both players feeling confident.

Slops & EireLemon 6-0 ThierryHenry & Razvan

Bib88sA.png

With four goals to his name, and having won 4 games in a row, Slops must have been feeling confident. What happened next will have shook him to his bones.

Both Razvan and ThierryHenry were given byes in the first round, and after losing 6-0 in the first match, they must have been feeling dejected. But full credit must go to Razvan here as he came out screaming.

Razvan would score 4 times, equalling Slops's haul in the first match, as he tried desperately to get back into the group. Only 1 goal for EireLemon however would mean Razvan remaining in second place on Team Goal Difference, and giving him an incredible task to do in the third match. Slops was hanging on to second place... just.

Slops & ThierryHenry 0-5 EireLemon & Razvan

3qnffMA.png

Going into the third match, ThierryHenry was 12 goals behind Slops, whilst Razvan was also 12 behind EireLemon. To qualify then, either player would need a 6 goal swing, as they faced each other for the second time.

A low scoring game would put Slops and EireLemon through, and so it proved as a 2-2 draw put the game into extra-time. Slops would fail to score for the second game in a row, as Razvan and EireLemon shared the goals, and Razvan would also score the injury time winner. That extra time winner might seem pointless in the context of the group, but it gives Razvan 6 points which may be enough to put him through as the one of the best third placed players, depending on other results.

Slops & Razvan 3-0 EireLemon & ThierryHenry

Congratulations to Razvan and Slops for qualifying for the second round.

Congratulations to EireLemon for qualifying as group winner!

Hope it will be possible to watch the finals live, would be very interesting!

Maybe we could try to make tournaments like this that is played during a weekend.
A group take less than 30 minutes to complete.
Let's say we pick a friday or saturday, and we play all matches in a couple hours.
Will be easier to plan and organize, if people know which day we play before signing up.

Yeah, I think that was the mistake I made. Just letting the groups arrange it themselves.

If we had done:

Tuesday - 10:30pm UK time - Last 16
Wednesday - 10:30pm UK time - Semi Final
Thursday - 10:30pm UK time - Final

It could be over in three days. Of course that would limit the amount of caf members from the Americas that could play, which is a shame as Mazhar organised the first... But it would be over in three days rather than three weeks.

We could even alternate between early, late and super-late.

Or as you say do it in one day during a weekend. That would be really cool.

What if we do one a sunday, let's say mid-day in Europe, shouldn't that make it possible for Asian/Australian, and Americans to join in aswell?

Theoretically the weekend is obviously best as all the different time zones can play.

In practice, people tend to be busy, and people are all available at 20 different times instead of all being available at the same time...

But I'm up for it.

Group 2-A - Sham-Wow!
Super Sham-Wow!

"it was so close, even though it wasnt" - rcoobc

"oh wow im watching someone fill in a spread sheet live, what a world we live in" - Shamwow

Where to begin for this epic Group 2-A contest? The group had actually tried to play earlier in the week, but ATX had left after losing the first match against Shamwow and Mazhar by 10 goals.

With Robo drafted in as the highest third placed team in the first round, the group started again, but was nearly delayed further as Shamwow fell asleep and awoke 30 minutes after the games were due to begin. He would later blame the Mazhar fans for throwing missiles at his car.

Wedge was looking to keep things tighter than the earlier cancelled group, and all players knew they would likely have to in two matches to get through. Robo was lucky to be there at all, whilst the two seeds Mazher and Shamwow knew how strong each other were.

The first match came down to the wire.

Match 1 - Shamwow & rcoobc vs Mazher and Wedge

Robo and Shamwow started well, with some good positioning denying Mazher and Wedge any opportunity going forward. Shamwow quickly showed why he was the number 1 seed, scoring with two well taken individual goals, putting them ahead.

Mazhar and Wedge started to come back into the game. Robo was beginning to loose concentration, whilst Shamwow wasn't yet scoring freely as Mazhar and Wedge made life difficult. Two mistakes from Robo, including an awkward backflip when the ball was on the floor in front of him, gave Mazhar and Wedge an opportunity to get back into the game, which they took with both hands. The score rested at 2-2.

Shamwow responded by completing his hatrick. Robo finally woke up and helped close the final minutes out. Mazhar and Wedge would come close, but were unable to score the equalising goal.

Shamwow & rcoobc 3-2 Welsh_Wonder & Mazhar13

Match 2 - Shamwow & Wedge vs Mazher13 & rcoobc

In the second match, old teammates Mazher13 and Robo played together for the second time this tournament. Talking with each other over voice chat (discord), surely they would be able to keep it tight and get something out of the game? The answer was an emphatic no.

Wedge proved what a valuable teammate he was keeping the midfield tidy, whilst Shamwow controlled both ends of the pitch. He added four goals to the hat trick he'd scored in the first, as Mazher and Robo were handed a crushing defeat. Robo would score with a beautiful chip to bring the game back to 2-1, but Shamwow was just too strong.

Shamwow & Welsh_Wonder_11 4-1 rcoobc & Mazhar13

GXw72nq.png

Match 3 - Shamwow & Mazher13 vs Welsh_Wonder_11 & rcoobc

Mazher started the game in last place with no points. To qualify, he would need to win by at least a three goal margin, but he was now with Shamwow who had already scored 7 goals in this group. Welsh-Wonder needed to keep the margin below three goals to go through, whilst rcoobc needed a 3 goal margin to have any chance of going through as runner up, or a 2 goal margin to have any chance of going through in third.

What followed will haunt Wedge and Robo for a long time to come. Shamwow scored 6 and Mazher13 as they put Wedge and Robo to the sword. Wedge must have been having flashbacks to the 10 goal loss in the group-that-never-was. Shamwow and Mazher13 are through with ease.

Shamwow & Mazhar13 9-1 rcoobc & Welsh_Wonder

222VByZ.png

Congratulations to Mazher13 for qualifying for the second round.

Congratulations to Shamwow for qualifying as group winner!

GG everyone in Group 2-A

Will do an FA Cup style draw for the next round later :D

Group 3-A - Semi Final 1 - The Group of Death

@Shamwow (1)
@DatIrishFella (2)
@Slops (3)
@RedMist99 (4)

QKt3THD.png

Interesting Facts:
- RedMist99 and DatIrishFella played in the same group in Round 2
- Shamwow has won 6 games in a row
- Slops and RedMist99 have both won 5 matches, losing one.
- DatIrishFella got a bye in the first round
- In total, players from this group have won 18 matches
- After Round 1, the three seeds were Shamwow, Redmist99 and Slops. In Round 3, they have all be drawn in the same group! Sorry!

Note; because 3 players have to come from some groups, and there is only two groups left, it's impossible to separate them completely.

For the final, does anyone want to do something special such as:

- Group of 5 (2v3) - 10 games
- Double Round Robin - 6 games
- Single Round Robin (3 games) followed by something else

The full matches of the groups I was involved in:

Oh yeah, I'm definitely up to play that. I look forward to when it arrives.

Also, @Grylte, are you still interested in doing colour commentary for the final group stage with me? If Rob decides to hold the final stage on Friday/the weekend, then we are set. We will just need to set a few things up to make sure that we can get our commentary included into the stream/video recording.

Also, @rcoobc, can you provide me your data sheets after the tournament? I'm thinking of setting up an Rocket League ladder ranking for seeding purposes and to see who's the best of the best on here. I'm still trying to think of a good way to represent the rankings fairly, but it should not be too hard.

Out of interest @mazhar13 , when you play your matches against European opponents, which server do you use?

When we played our first games, @fanutd was based in Cali and the rest were in UK & Ireland. I chose the European servers but fanutd's ping was appalling.

Would US East Coast have been fairer or would it not make much difference?

Definitely, US East would have been much better for fanutd than Europe. Western NA players have a tough time playing in servers outside of NA.

Whenever I play Caf Europeans, I have played either in Europe or US East. Both were fine for me.

I'll post them here as there shoudn't be too many people looking for PSN names to hack on page 3 of a Rocket League tournament... I hope!

So this is the full spreadsheet, with basically all the information:
[Removed]
It has the following tabs:
AkO6fV2.png

The Groups 1-A to 2-C (I haven't done them for the Semi Finals yet) use this command to link to other spreadsheets that anyone can edit (with the link)

udEqhYo.png

That importrange command just brings in the data from the other spreadsheets I've made.

My Google Drive Folder looks like this:

oZsAiX5.png

I make one Spreadsheet for each group (duplicating an old one) and then import the range of that spreadsheet into the master spreadsheet as above.

The LiveScores just does it the opposite way round.

So I guess you just want the match results, which can be found in the first link above... but if anyone wants to make a similar speadsheet, you need to know the following functions:

In order:
  • rank() - An obvious one, but you need it. This will decide who is winning when the matches have been added up.
  • match() - This is the link between a static table and a dynamic table. You use it to say "Where is the team ranked top in the table?" and it will say "Number 13"
  • index() - (Also Vlookup or Hlookup) - These take the match number, and use it to display the correct data. So you tell it "Show me the 13th team in the alphabetical table" and it will say "Why thats Manchester United!"
  • importrange() - This brings information from one spreadsheet to another. I only use this on empty spreadsheets.
I know most of that isn't what you wanted.. but just in case anyone else wanted to look at it in future.

And yeah, I wanted to do a ladder thing too... I was looking at ELO ranking systems, but decided they were above my paygrade

@mazhar13 still? :o
Can't remember saying that... Anyway, I'd be fantastic at it!
I can't do it unfortunately, since i live in the bushes and use 4G, would steal too much of my monthly data ;)

Well, if anyone wants to join me in being the co-commentator for the final, then the position is open. Else, I wouldn't mind doing it by myself.

The commentary and live stream of the final is still tentative. It all depends on the schedule and whether I can meet up with the finalists.

When will the final group be played? I want to know so that I can schedule in a live stream of the final group.

I totally put my name down for this early on :(

Yeah - add me into the group convo so I know when it gets organised for or mention me in a comment when you know and I should be able to do it.

Need to promote it around the forum a little - see if we can get a decent following. Are you gonna host it on twitch?

Yeah, I'll definitely be hosting the final if our times can be compatible. I was also hoping for @Damien to make a forum announcement to get people to watch it. It'll be great, especially if we develop a following here.

Do you mean the notices thing used for stuff like new podcasts? Niall really isn't a fan of the notice feature being used unless it concerns stuff like site errors or the podcasts.

Would be cool if stuff like this did develop a following though. I like what robocop did with it, even though my time in it was short and crap.

Oh, I didn't know he was against its use for other purposes. Fair enough, I guess.

I'm just wondering if there really is a way for us to get this going, maybe even finally get the RedCafe Twitch channel going for stuff like this if it becomes more regular. However, if we can't really make an announcement for this sort of stuff, then that's fine, I guess. We'll just have to rely on the thread title to get people into the stream for the final group. It should be really fun watching the games live and seeing who wins. Plus, it probably won't take up too much of anyone's time.

Best way is to probably try garnering support for a games subforum where newbies can also post: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/games-sub-forum.416967/ (see last few posts or so)
