Daryll Cullinan

Surprised he was still left personally.

This is probably irrational but i'm worried about being left with a really shit keeper. Also, with the quality of batsman now available, I don't think i'm losing out by taking this supreme athlete with an average of 32, especially with McGrath bowling for the nicks. Anyway, everything else aside, I idolised him.

(you can't see him but that's Jeff Dujon. Fun fact about him - he's NEVER participated in a losing series. I'm hoping that's an omen)

Dujon is a pretty good pick. Decent average and great athleticism. The only issue with him is that he spent his entire career a mile behind the stumps. Bit unproven right up at the stumps particularly when Kumble and Clarke will both have a few overs between them.

I thought about that but there's no reason to believe he wouldn't be good at it especially with his reflexes and athleticism...its not like he had much chance to prove himself in THAT West Indies team. He'll keep great to McGrath, Streak and McMillan plus Kumble's not a traditional spinner anyway. I think he'll do fine.

I'm pretty okay with how my team's shaping up

1. Graeme Smith
2. XX
3. XX
4. Aravinda de Silva
5. Michael Clarke
6. XX
7. Brian McMillan
8. Jeff Dujon
9. Heath Streak
10. Anil Kumble
11. Glenn McGrath

The batting is deep (Streak at 9 could give it a healthy clout with an average of 22, Kumble's a decent night watchman) and has stroke players.
Bowling is fine - McGrath, Kumble and Streak are all used to being strike and stock bowlers...none of the wimpish 'bowl me in short bursts or I get tired' for them. McMillan at 33 is a perfectly fine fourth bowler. Clarke and Aravinda will chip in.
Dujon's not going to let too many drop.
Now i'll have to take my chances on filling in those XX's. There's a fair few 35ish average batsmen left. I suppose i'll get somebody or the other.

My XI so far

1. Kirsten
2. XX
3. Dravid
4. M. Crowe
5. Cullinan
6. XX
7/8. xxx
7/8. Chris Cairns
9. Macgill
10. Walsh
11. Alderman

I am loving that middle order. Having cairns gives me good flexibility but with 3 bowlers who are bad with batting, and a possible weak batting WK pick, I will have to pick an extra batsmen. Regarding bowling, it is mainly going to hinge on Alderman. His figures are good, let's see if people put any trust on them.

My pick is Hashan Tillakaratne

Not bad...you and Aldo Raine have the best middle orders - all proper test players. You're right about the bowling depending on Alderman not being seen as a weak link though. I certainly haven't seen him play and I must be one of the older participants.

Edit: Looking at his figures - he had a very brief career didn't he? Shoulder issue (tackling a pitch invader!) and rebel tour I see. Idiot.

2 Stewart
3 Lara
4
5 Dean Jones
6 Lakshman
7 Broad
8
9 Reifel (Decent batter - 26 average!!)
10 Mushtaq Ahmed
11 Ntini

Coming together. Still worried about my bowling but my middle order is a best - plus both Broad and Rifle can bat. My spin options are dismal though.

Did anybody do any detailed strategies with spreadsheets and stuff? I just picked every time my turn came up - next time i need to strategize more

Didn't consider your middle order when replying to Crappy. Yes thats lovely...even better than Crappy's I think because they score the runs quicker. Shouldn't be giving you advice since you'll pick before me but think you might want to push Jones and Laxman up the order and bring in someone who can bat a bit and turn their arm over at 6...with that bowling attack and the class batting that you have.

That was my idea exactly. Let's see what I can do. Broad and Reifel can both bat too. It is all about taking wickets now for me!

Since everyone's taking their cocks out...I pretty much decided to make it a Donaldo's Favourite XI midway through the game.

Saeed Anwar
Michael Atherton
Kumar Sangakkara
Mark Waugh
Kevin Pietersen
Carl Hooper

Allan Donald
Craig McDermott

There is a reasoning behind the choices which I suppose should be explained whenever the voting happens.

Wasting time on a Monday morning but class opening partnership obviously. Nobody compares. Don't rate Malinga and Sammy as test bowlers though so depending on Srinath and Morrison for your wickets is a little meh. You'll have options though since you seem to be planning on bringing in another bowler and Sehwag's useful with the ball.

I did a bit of that as well - Kumble, McMillan, Dujon and Aravinda I went with the heart. McGrath, Smith and Clarke with the head.

I loved watching Waugh and Hooper as well. Really had to resist picking Hooper when I was picking Streak. Good as he was, his figures don't prove it.

Cricket is stat lover's paradise though. In a way football can never be.

Sure you can call it a team game all you want but at any given moment, its one man against another and that can be measured very well in stats.
