Gaming Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Stadia)

I've been messing around online over the past few weeks. Such a great game to just load in and have no direction. Great for playing inbetween games with big, solo campaigns.

Nah I don’t agree with that. There’s another prequel story in there leading to the black water siege. Especially with the old Wild West when the gang was in its prime.

Bingo. Playing as Hosea or maybe even Dutch (or the brothers who died at Blackwater), with a young Arthur Morgan in tow. We have seen how the gang declined and eventually ended, now lets see how it began and when it peaked.

Just started it (for the first time). Played the entire first chapter in a sitting.

This is medicine after the torture of playing Black Flag.

The RDR2 story has nowhere to go though.

Well, I mean it's true, it doesn't from a future perspective, but since RDR2 is a prequel to RDR1 it only follows that RDR3 would be set further into the past. Here's the thing, Red Dead 1 is set in 1911 onwards. Red Dead 2 is set in 1899 onwards. Could easily make a point that we have yet to have a game set in the actual 'Wild West'.

My premise for a future game would be some kind of exploration into the early life of Dutch; perhaps deal with his formative youth on the back of losing his father during the Civil War. Have the protagonist as a sort of proto-Arthur, or even young Arthur himself, adopted by Dutch.

They could do a whole Sadie story. Or introduce a completely new character. Perhaps a Mexican one. There was a load of barren map that seemed like it was planned for something.

There’s also scope to delve in to all the good times Arthur spoke about in the past. I’d like to play those, while they were having a great time committing robberies and tha.

I have a PS5 now and installed my PS4 version of RDR2

It seems very glitched. I’m getting wanted levels for very random things. Like killing O’Driscolls in side missions I’m getting wanted for murder (like it thinks I’m killing random NPCs), I got a wanted level when I took the murdering prostitute into the sheriffs office (again as if it was an everyday NPC). I’m getting wanted for “vandalism” randomly when I’m just riding my horse around the towns, literally not breaking anything. To stress these are just examples and I’m getting wanted levels ridiculously often for tiny things, if anything at all.

Had none of these issues on the PS4 and I played it through twice. Is it a new update messing it up or because the PS5 isn’t converting it well?

Anyone else had any issues on the PS5?

Insane that Rockstar built this incredible world and it's just sat there doing nothing. I'd pay £50 for some proper DLC. Hell, why did they bother adding the RDR1 map if they're not planning on remastering the original? They've even abandoned the online game.

I really loved this game when I played it, and yet I've had no inclination or desire to replay it since then... No idea why.

Its too slow to intice many playthroughs i think personally despite being an all time great. Im out of games atm though i might do this again. Its been some years.

I re-played it a few months ago and enjoyed it more than the 1st time. Impossible if you are a completionist though without any guidance online

Finished RDR2 and now on RDR1. So it's in chronological order.

Love the game but I struggle with doing a prequal. In my mind I'm now riding with the spirit of Arthur with me. In reality he wasn't even a thought when this game was made, even though it's in the future.

When they do a 3rd, I want it to be Jack and set in the events after RDR1

You get to play as Jack in one of the DLC.

Edit:Sorry I'm mistaken it's in the epilogue which ties everything up.

I can't see a sequel for RDR1 time period. The original game takes place between 1911-14. Even that game is well and truly after the Wild West is no more. RDR2 works in 1899 because it sits on the precipice of the modern era with one foot still in a post-Wild West landscape; but the one thing we haven't gotten is an actual Red Dead game that is set in Wild West time period itself.

My personal wish is for some kind of Post-Civil War story that takes place at the end of 1864, and trails a lone character who is embittered by the fallout of the result of the war. Some kind of story where you play as a Confederate ex-soldier; angry, embittered, worn-out, trying to find himself in a re-unified nation that is modernising, urbanising, yet offering monetary advantages for outlaw behaviour.

That sounds great. Hopefully they feel they can just break away from the Arthur Morgan, John Marsden era, it's never been an issue in GTA.

Yes with completely different characters (albeit maybe with someone appearing as a minor character) I would like them to go back further to proper Wild West. Was more thinking if they keep the same story and timeline

RDR 2 has to be one of the most conflicting games for me personally. The juxtaposition of the world design, writing and characters (all elite level) against the moment to moment gameplay (early 00's standard) is so jarring for me even though the net is highly positive. I'll probably go back one more time when they release a 60fps patch in 2035.

Yeah, I think the story needs to be centered around an individual rather than a group, so that the narrative can make best use of the periods biggest and most important figures. Not being tied to a group, our protagonist can havfe a narrative that allows him/her to run into Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Walt Whitman, Frederick Douglass, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickock, Geronimo, Thomas Edison, Edgar Allen Poe, the list goes on and on. This was difficult in RDR2 in 1899, because a lot of the figures was already dead and/or not contemporarily relevant anymore. Having a game in the heart of the Wild West, at a time when the most interesting people are in their prime.........now that's a sequel.

Never played this before and bought it today on a whim. Any tips for a first time play through?

It’s still downloading 105GB so not had chance to start it at all yet

Yeah, be careful brandishing and using your weapon in a town, or even antagonizing people verbally. Things can escalate quickly, and bounties can rack up quickly.

Man, I’m so jealous.

Just enjoy it?

Well, maybe: no need to do any significant exploration outside your 'known' zone early on, you'll get everywhere eventually anyway. It's fun to do later on though, on e you're properly equipped and have a good horse and all that. There's a lot to discover and some of the views are stunning.

Annoying how they never updated it for PS5.

Want to replay it but not at 30fps

Finished downloading (finally) and now my disk won’t read  trip back to CEX tomorrow it looks like.

If you care about hunting and fishing achievements, spend some time at each new camp exploring the area.

And have the varmint rifle equipped when riding around because there’ll always be some dang little bird you haven’t capped enough of…or a big rare one.

Use the talk option as often as possible, to everyone in your camp, to outsiders, to everyone. There's thousands of lines of dialogue that you can easily never hear if you don't engage in conversation often.

You've got so many hours of joy ahead. I’ve finished it twice. One of the best games ever made

Amen. I envy @Big Andy and what awaits. I would advise avoiding spoilers, get the hell out of this and any other threads online, and just play it through with as little outside influence as possible. It's one helluva ride, and the only game of this size which I've played through four times without it ever losing a gram of bitter-sweet joy. Probably the end of that era of Rockstar gameplay, and cynics might find some criticism in that, but the sometimes clunky mechanics are made up with by the best open world ever, the definitive horse physics and a story which hits so fecking hard that it only really has The Last of Us as a contemporary, and that's an 'on rails' game in comparison.

Enjoy!

Just enjoy the open world and writing. Its gameplay is sub par but everything else is fantastic.

You get arguably the best horse in the game for free quite early on if you go back to the area you start off in. It's a bit of an annoying trek to get there but I would say it's definitely worth it.

Other than that, just enjoy it. The game was really special. Arthur Morgan is in my top 5 favorite videogame characters ever. His character arc was the best thing about the game.

Great game, but it took a few hours for it to click. I think the opening sequence in the snow gives a really bad first impression, and it’s also easy to get side tracked with side content early on that ends up not being thst satisfying (or at least this happened to me). So id recommend pushing the main quests forward for the first few hours, since they’re great fun and they open up the games locations and characters. Once you’re in the meat of the game, there’s hours of fun stuff to while away the afternoons.

Get the Turkoman horse and do all the available side quests as sometimes you get some really good items /weapons.
