No love for Frank Underwood ?

Spacey and Wright are both exceptional in that series.

Fair point, honestly never thought of him! Which is remarkable considering I went with Kevin Spacey as John Doe (Se7en) in my list... heck of a performance in that too, considering he has roughly 15mins time in the movie yet manages to put in the best performance!

Wouldn't mind doing a poll between that and the winner of the current poll. Seems to be popular, and everyone will get involved.

Hmmm may stick a new poll in the countdown including this but it seems enough want Books or Actors/Actresses - Daft to go against the poll just cause you say so .

Could always do Top 50 Women along side the winner of the poll.

It's a bit more than 15 minutes, I'd say he's in it a good half hour but I agree with you, considering his screentime he makes an incredibly strong impression. He'll be on my lists if I manage to get to it.

To elaborate slightly

1. Don Draper

A no brainer in the end, Don is simply the most interesting character in TV or cinema for me. Embodying the American dream of the self made man (literally), we get to follow his life and eternal search for something more, without ever quite knowing what it is. Redemption? Happiness? Success? Love? Maybe all of that. As Mad Men is coming to a close, so is the story of this fascinating character that a lot of us are going to miss immensely.

2. Randy Marsh

I don't quite know what makes an average American walking down a small town street with his testicles in a wheelbarrow singing Buffalo Soldier so hilarious, but there you go.

While South Park initially focused on the stories of 4 young offensive kids, its scope later developed to secondary characters, and the most famous of those would soon become a fan favourite: Randy Marsh quite simply offers some of the shows best storylines and biggest laughs while offering a brilliant satirical take on the average American.

3. Michael Corleone

From the timid member of the Corleone family crushed by the shadow of his bigger-than-life older brother Sonny to the crushed father dying in the sun of Sicily, the character will have developed to a family man, a fratricide, a businessman, and an old man searching for redemption. Oh, and the boss of a mob family responsible of multiple killings, of course. The story of this character is nothing short of mesmerizing due to its excellent writing and brilliant interpretation by Pacino. Even the botched third installment was only worthy of interest due to the character's motivations. A movie great.

4. Tyler Durden

Hugely quotable and incredibly charming, this violent sociopath portrayed by Brad Pitt is somewhat of an icon for the generation Y. Pitt oozes charisma in bringing to life a character that doesn't even actually really exist.

5. Hannibal Lecter

Quite simply the best villain in all media, Anthony Hopkins is chilling as the highly intelligent cannibal and over 20 years later, his portrayal of Lecter still remains very frightening.

6. Fox Mulder

While the forte of X-Files was undoubtedly the strong chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson, as a character, Fox Mulder is right up there with the best. His boyish charm and easy smile bring to life an immensely likeable character who gets to grow on screen throughout the seasons. His frustration at fighting a faceless government wide conspiracy never dampens his hopes and his belief that 'we are not alone' and that he can prove it. His motivations run deeper, as we find out, and Duchovny manages to bring a lot of kindness and sweetness to the role.

7. Omar Little

'A man's gotta have a code' is probably one of the most emblematic quotes of The Wire and sums up this fantastic character full of nuances. Making this new age Robin Hood a homosexual in the thug life of Baltimore was just another stroke of genius by David Simon and added to the ambiguity of Omar Little who you often saw comitting capital crimes but couldn't help feel sympathy towards. A wonderfully written character served by a fantastic performance by Michael K Williams makes him an absolute must on any 'best character ever' list.

8. Sterling Archer

'How'd you get life insurance, Lana? Don't they know you're in the danger zone?' Misogynistic, borderline racist, ignorant, arrogant, alcoholic, somewhat autistic ('I counted the bullets. Am I the only one that does that?') and yet incredibly efficient at his job as a secret agent (well, sometimes), Archer makes it into the top 10 easily. While you could spend hours quoting his best stuff, the most memorable moments for me are when Archer comes up with some obscure reference and is offended that no one understands it.

THE OCELOT REMEMBERS ME!

9. Vito Corleone

When I started listing the characters, I'd decided that I'd try to keep it to one character per film/show. I failed, three times, and Vito Corleone was my first stumble. The character is just too good not to make it, and is probably even more interesting when compared to how his son Michael fails in his bid to protect his family. An old-school mobster, Vito deals with his affairs in a classy way and puts his family at the forefront of his preoccupations. Portrayed by Brando at the height of his powers, Vito is one of the most memorable characters in all media, very simply.

10. Ellen Ripley

Last character of the top 10 and first woman to make the list, Ellen Ripley is a strong character from the Alien saga that just won't die. And even when she does, people are going to bring her back, so it doesn't really matter. Sigourney Weaver does a great job and especially manages to bring a lot of compassion and subtleties to the character in the first installment.

11. The Dude

'Yeah? Well you know, that's just like, your opinion, man.' While The Dude may not be the best character ever, it's difficult not to rank him very high up on the list of the coolest characters ever to grace the screen. Jeff Bridges does a great job in bringing to life this incredible character with some fantastic timing and brilliant one liners.

12. Stringer Bell

The real criminal mastermind in The Wire, Stringer Bell distinguished himself from his peers by wanting to elevate himself from his lowly position as a drug slinger by entering the legitimate business of real estate, to no avail. His downfall was just the more brutal but in the process we were showed a wonderfully complex character, highly intelligent and very two faced. Idris Elba was truly fantastic in the part and brought a lot of elegance to it.

13. Lucille Bluth

While many other characters of the wonderful show Arrested Development could've made it onto the list (GOB, Buster...), the matriarch of the dysfunctional family is a personal favourite of mine. With seemingly no mother instincts (her ambiguous relationship with Buster being one of the best parts of the show), a certain business acumen (well, as long as it involved embezzling funds and being overall dishonest) and some fantastic ignorance (call it borderline racism), Lucille steals the show in most of her scenes and is served well by an incredibly charismatic Jessica Walter.

14. Michael Scott

While The Office UK is my favourite between the two versions of the show, Michael is a brilliant sitcom character who manages to outweigh all his negatives, and as we see throughout the show, there are many, with a real sense of humanity and kindness. The show drastically declined after his departure and served to show how important he was in gluing together the wide cast of the office.

15. Francis Underwood

Machiavellian, Shakespearian, the literary references are there and begin to paint the portrait of a recent favourite of mine brilliantly portrayed by Kevin Spacey in the US version of House of Cards. His Southern drool serves the character's moral depravity well and is one of the many traits of this highly ambitious and coldly cruel fictional political mastermind.

16. James Bond

The name is Bond, James Bond. Probably the most famous quote in cinema history. The British spy, a womanizer capable of saving the world on a frequent basis, is truly one of the best characters in film and has survived the test of time, more recently becoming more brutal and emotional thanks to Daniel Craig's performance.

17. Rick Sanchez

Highly alcoholic and profoundly dysfunctional, Rick Sanchez after just one season of adventures in 'Rick & Morty', quickly became one of my favourite characters, not only for the quality of his portrayal in the 13 episodes to date, but also for the promise he holds in coming seasons. Arrogant, highly intelligent but somehow completely detached from humanity, Rick Sanchez is a wonderful take on the 'crazy scientist' character.

18. The Joker

While I actually believe Batman is a more interesting character, intrinsically, The Joker completely steals the show in Nolan's Dark Knight. This crazy looking psychopath is just after one goal, chaos, and pushes the hooded hero to his limits. Ledger is fantastic in one of his last performances ever, sadly, and brings a new dimension to the cartoon character that had been portrayed with brio by Nicholson two decades earlier.

19. Sherlock Holmes

BBC rarely mess up when it comes to TV and when they decided to revive the Sherlock Holmes franchise, the casting of the main protagonist was paramount. They did incredibly well to hand the keys to Cumberbatch who has since delighted audiences with his wide range and fantastic performance as the world's most famous private detective.

20. Audrey Horne

In a town full of crazy characters and weird people, Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) brings her own weirdness and ambiguous sexuality to the table and remains memorable.

21. Travis Bickle

Maybe my favourite performance by De Niro in one of Scorsese's many 70s masterpieces, Travis Bickle is a dormant sociopath waiting to emerge and clearly uneasy with the city life. Mesmerizing performance by De Niro whose class was incredible that decade with such performances (and others like in Raging Bull).

22. Indiana Jones

Not much to say really apart that Indy, in the three installments of Spielberg's archaeological adventures (there were three, you're a fool if you believe they made a fourth one), was the king of cool, the ruggish looking adventurer capable of vainquishing a nazi army, doing it in style and getting the girl with a few one-liners along the way. Oh and also, he can jump out of a plane in an inflatable boat and survive the fall.

23. Eric Cartman

Vulgar, ignorant, racist, misogynistic, antisemitic, xenophobic and borderline sociopathic, Eric Cartman is probably one of the most offensive characters on TV ever, not the least because he's actually an 8 year old kid.

24. John Doe

While a lot of the characters I've chosen in my list are ones that are developed other hours of media, John Doe (Kevin Spacey) only needs a mere 30 minutes to leave an everlasting impression on the viewer. Spacey's portrayal of the Seven Sins Murderer is memorable due to his cold and detached air rendering him extremely frightening.

25. Ron Swanson

Ron is a government employee that hates government. What he does love though is breakfast, bacon, steaks, bourbon, cigars, jazz and craftsmanship. Oh, and as his shell softens throughout the seasons of Parks & Recreation, we also realize he has his own brand of kindness and affection for friends.

I went back and edited my list Duffy, just so you know.

Croquet Monster summed up Draper, Archer, Lucille Bluth, Omar Little, Swanson, Audrey and The Dude so perfectly that I won't bother with them.

Homer Simpson

"Just squeeze your rage into a bitter little ball and release it at an approprate time. Like that day I hit the referee with a whiskey bottle. Remember that, when daddy hit the referee?"

Simpsons, you diabolical...There's just so much to his character, from total ignorance to a suprising knowledge of the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of America. He's become a bit of a jerk in the later seasons but he'll live forever as the lovable buffoon in the early seasons.

Roger Sterling

"She died the way she lived: surrounded by the people she answered phones for."

An absolute quip machine. A hero in many ways, in war and in life, pretty much...Watch out for his memoirs, "Sterling's Gold", hitting the stores next year.

Krusty the Clown

"What has Fatty Arbuckle done that I haven't done?"

Everyone loves a miserable, selfish, addiction riddled clown. He was used a lot by the writers in the early seasons to write jokes about the industry, not used much these days I think.

Monty Burns

"Gentlemen! It is imperative that we crush the rebels before the start of the rainy season! And a shiny new donkey for whoever brings me the head of Colonel Montoya...*Smithers has a word*...Oh! And by that I mean it's time to choose the employee of the month...

He's just the perfect comedic villain.

Ricky

"One man's garbage is another man person's good ungarbage"

He just wants to grow some weed, earn some cash, get drunk, smoke some hash, eat some pepperoni, hang out with his daughter and then bang Lucy. It's no big deal.

Rust Cohle

"I think human consciousness, is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware, nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself, we are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self; an accretion of sensory, experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody is nobody. Maybe the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight - brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal."

A broken, intelligent, obsessive, philosophical, self destructive true detective. It's a role of a life time and McConaughey was up to the task.

Rick Blaine

"We'll always have Rooney in Paris"

Humphrey Bogart's greatest performance as Humphrey Bogart. The word iconic was, like, most likely invented to describe this character.

Don Lope de Aguirre

"If we turn back now others will come, and they will succeed...and we'll remain a failure. Even if this land only consists of trees and water, we will conquer it! "

Klaus Kinski, being a full-blown madman himself was the perfect fit to play a conquistador descending into madness in the search of El Dorado. I could watch him stare at things with those piercing blue eyes all day long.

Johnny (Naked)

"All right, I'm not saying that life will end or the world will end, or the universe will cease to exist. But man will cease to exist! Just like the dinosaurs passed into extinction, the same thing will happen to us! We're not feckin' important! We're just a crap idea!"

A whirlwind of chaos and destruction that leaves everyone he meets in ruins. Cynical, intellectual, unpleasant. "Alfie in the grips of Thatcherite depression".

Robert Dupea

I don't know if you'd be particularly interested in hearing anything about me. My life, I mean...Most of it doesn't add up to much that I could relate as a way of life that you'd approve of...I'd like to be able to tell you why, but I don't really...I mean, I move around a lot, not because I'm looking for anything really, but because I'm getting away from things that get bad if I stay...And I'm looking..for auspicious beginnings, I guess...I'm trying to, you know, imagine your half of this conversation...My feeling is, that if you could talk, we probably wouldn't be talking.

Jack Nicholson's finest hour, before he started being typecast and completely descended into overacting. A former piano prodigy who abandoned his upper class background to drift across America, picking up small time jobs along the way, he's dissaffected and angry, with no particular aim.

Poppy (Happy-Go-Lucky)

The polar opposite to David Thewlis' character in Naked with endless cheerful optimism. It makes other people happy too but can also get misinterpreted and get on peoples nerves.

Sanjuro

"I'm not dying yet. I have to kill quite a few men first."

Toshiro Mifune's samurai is Japan's version of Clint Eastwood and James Bond. The man without a name was even based on him. Crafty, manly and a badass.

Bridget Gregory

"I am a total fecking bitch."

Linda Fiorentino is the sexiest and most evil Femme Fatale ever put on screen,

Mike Waters

"This road will never end. It probably goes all around the world."

Never have you wanted to hug a character through the screen as much as this one. A narcoleptic gay street hustler in search of his mother, love and "home". River Phoenix's outstanding and natural performance makes it one of the most likeable characters ever.

Royal Tenenbaum

"He did. There was a price on my head, and he was a hired assassin. Stuck me right in the gut with a shiv..."

Wes Anderson is yet to eclipse this film and eccentric father figure. Gene Hackman was just terrific in the role.

He Zhiwu, escaped prisoner #223

I can't be arsed to type any more.

Last call people. I'm at a gig tonight so I won't be here to hold your hand until the deadline comes.

Get them in by midnight!
