Alonso/Mascherano with Gerrard behind Torres was an outstanding midfield in fairness

then rafa decided to replace Alonso with Gareth Barry lololololololololololololol phew

Thinking about it had Liverpool invested in a couple of decent wingers and a good backup striker they might have actually won the league

instead Rafa bought about 40 below average players - he didn't really believe in quality over quantity did he

Alonso-Mascherano was a pretty exceptional partnership to be fair.

Considering that season was the year of Iniesta-Busquets-Xavi, I really doubt they were close.

It was good, not the best in the world but it was up there.

That said the other teams other near the top of the PL had also very good CMs at the time. Arsenal still had Fabregas ,Chelsea had a fit Essein and a younger Lampard. We had Fletcher at the top of his game, a younger Scholes+Giggs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Sissoko wank for them?

Think he had a good debut season with them - Tiote-esque. Good defensively, disrupted play well, but was horrible going forward -then had injury problems which along with the arrival of Mascherano cost him his place in the side.

I'd also like to add to your splendid OP an honourable mention for Jordan Henderson. I think he is a more well rounded version of Momo. He doesn't quite have Momo's athleticism and his almost go-go gadget legs. What he does have over Momo is the ability to play football. As well as a terrific athelete in his own right, Henderson is also capable of passing the ball about as well as almost anybody else at the club (Sahin and Allen probably being the exceptions). He also packs some power into his shots.

Dear god....Not only do they believe that they had the best midfield in the word, aparently their is place in that best midfield for Jordan Henderson?

From the same thread:

Nice article. I still think the weak link in our midfield is lack of cover for Lucas. If he is out it means we are robbing Peter to pay Paul. As much as we need another attacker or two we definitely need a young DM. A bit like Lucas learned his role alongside Mascherano in training a young DM could come in and learn from a great player. Allen or Sahin as the middle of the 3 and Gerrard/Shelvey at the point. I always think Henderson will take Sahins role if he doesn't stay and have a year of development.

Lucas exponential improvement is continuing while he is injured. If he will be injured for another 2 years he will be as good as Maradona, Pele and co.

After I told my mate that Liverpool fans were the most self-pitying fans in the world.

Not at all. We know where we are and how we've gotten here. Poor ownership(Moores(heart was in the right place),Hicks and Gilett), poor management(Souness, Houlier(2 years aside), Hodgson, Daglish(2nd spell)). And we know what we have to do to get back to the top. At least we are proper fans though. How many United fans, follow United just because they win things ? How many United fans used to follow different clubs ? They claim to have the biggest following in the world, yet how many of those follow them for the right reason ? Chelsea and City are much the same these days. And I know there are true United fans that supported them through the dark times, or their fathers did so they followed suit or they have roots in Manchester. And I know those fans hate the glory hunters as much as the rest of us. But I'm just glad I follow a club with very few glory hunting fans(we have a few) I'd rather be a club struggling than a club with fans who follow silverware rather than the team itself.

When I pointed out that Liverpool have a large proportion of fans who started supporting them 'cause of their success in the 80's.

In the 80s....success may have inspired them to follow us but they've stuck through over 20 years without a league title, I think they've earned the right to not be called glory hunters anymore. Whereas United.... I remember seeing a kid on tv, who supported United until City beat them then he supported City, and he was even a Manc. A lad I know supported United but then jumped ship to Chelsea when Chelsea started to win titles. I know other people, grown men who supported Liverpool in the 80s and now support United. Fickle fans.

:wenger:

Suarez was castrated and branded a racist long before he was charged and banned for 8 games. So i've no sympathy for Clattenburg.

Think you mean "castigated"? I hope so, at least!

Seemed like a good moment to pose the question - was Commolli a 'plant' being paid by some other shadowy organisation to **** things up further at LFC or was he simply a smooth talking scheister who pulled the wool over the eyes of the LFC management who have admitted that 'mistakes have been made'?

In fairness most of the other posters think the OP is mad but its still funny.

I just hope we take our time re-introducing him into the team, he's had awful luck getting fit lately, and it's a pity, because he's the best midfield general in the premiership, probably top 3 in the world.

Some lad called Padre Clefs

Carroll must've been caught chain smoking, with a pint in hand, weeping for Newcastle whilst rubbing fecal matter over Rodgers' desk in order to get any lower down the pecking order than Joe Cole

They're not happy with Joe Cole.

:wenger:

silly Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime is overlooking the fact that whilst they were winning everything and we were in the middle of a 26 year title drought, we still had bigger crowds than they did. Any success will bring a club more "fans" but the core base still varies regardless. idiot. Anyone can cite true or false cases/incidents.

 their old Henderson thread and their new one is great.

Old (Just signed): CRACKING, get on lad. This guy looks like he could be a real superstar, la! Time is on his side here. YAWN

old: (At the end):.. Well pretty shit season. Kenny's been sacked. Comoli you fecking twat.. If he's here next season hopefully he can mature again.

New (start of this season): Great that hes not leaving. I wish people wouldn't get on his case. Making him 4th choice would really help him develop. Using him as a fringe player.

New (now): feck, he really is a bit shit ay..... Lets face it, he'll never really be a superstar player. Just a vital cog in our team.

omg so many wums in this thread, hes not shit guys.

The fact that OT seats thirty thousand more seems slightly relevant.

It didn't at the time. Only 'recently' has our capacity grown vastly beyond their own, mainly cause they like to fanny about an cost themselves millions on abandoned projects, it's their favourite pass time (see Andy Carrol).

It did not seat 30 odd thousand more during our 26 year title drought, did it? Old Trafford and Anfield were more or less equivalent back during then.

Since the war United have nearly always been #1 in attendances. Even in our season in Div.2 and the season before when we finished 21st in Div.1 we topped the attendance charts.

Spot on. I can remember as a kid the dippers having a higher average attendance than United once in the late eighties during Fergie's first full season and that's it from my memory. We were getting the biggest crowds long before we had the biggest stadium.
