We were short on CF even last year when Jose wanted Mandzukic. We literally had only Lukaku and if he was off form/injured you had nobody to replace him with.

Same with Ole. Even if he wanted to replace him you didn't have an option. He tried Sanchez - failed, started with Rashford or Martial but neither were too convincing either.

We were linked with Ben Yadder, again Mandzukic, even Llorente. Obviously we wanted a CF but left it too late. If you think Lukaku being sold without replacement in place was Ole plan from the off then you are delusional.
 
I'd award 2 points for sorting the defence, 2 for midfield, 2 for attack, 4 for selling deadwood.

So overall I'll give 4 points. 2 for defence (AWB and Maguire), 1 for attack (James) and 1 for seemingly getting rid of Lukaku but not Jones, Darmian or Matic.

So you don’t want to discuss Lukaku being marginalised any more? After you told me to ‘put down’ whatever I was on, and gleefully shared your stats with me, I’ve put those stats into context, and shown that he only came back into the fold properly when we lost 3 attackers in the space of, what, 2 weeks? So you agree he was marginalised now, yes?

De Gea and Pogba not leaving may be the biggest success of the transfer window.
The other big success was finally adressing an elephant in the room (CB+RB). Sadly, the other one (CM+AM) is still there and there's no time to fix it.

The fact that big names would only come to (or stay at) United for huge paychecks is a bad sign for the future. Not getting rid of the "not good enough" players, same thing.
 
5/10 only because we’ve finally got a half decent defence. Done absolutely nothing to sure up the midfield or inject an ounce of creativity though.

2 were needed for defence. RB and CB two points awarded.

2 were needed to replace Herrera and Fellaini in midfield. No points awarded.

2 were needed for attack to replace Mata and Lukaku. One point awarded for James.

4 points would have been awarded to sell Jones, Darmian, Matic and Lukaku. One point awarded.

Jones and Darmian aren't required in the squad and have already been replaced by Dalot, AWB and Maguire.

10 points would have been awarded had we signed 6 players and sold 4 players.

I dunno, that’s an enormous rotation of players. I wouldn’t be easy with that level of movement at all. How often have we seen that actually work?
 
6/10 or 8/10 - depending on how well our youngsters fare. Maguire and Wan Bissaka are major upgrades to what I consider our most desperate weak spot - and we managed to keep our two key players and also I believe our focus on fitness and professionalism will pay off. A proper midfield general and a capable goalscorer up front however would make me feel more at ease - as we're lacking proven first-team quality in those areas (that's where the youngster-variable kicks in and to be honest I believe they're up for it I've been impressed by their growth).

I would. Chelsea under Abramovich to win the league. City to win the league. 6 in and 4 out is exactly what we should have been aiming for. As it stands we now fall another year behind in the plan to get rid of shite players and bring in actual talent.

Not to mention we'll start the season with a midfield weaker than last season which was poor and without a world class number 9. Failure of epic proportions which we will all see in a matter of months.
 
6/10.

- Got our top two targets in defence, which both hugely improve the squad.
- Need a CM still.
- Need a RW still.

But the biggest problem, the defence, has seemingly been solved.

- Outgoings can be judged at the end of the window, because we have another 3 weeks to shift the deadwood.
- Getting (more or less) our money back on Lukaku, is a great deal.

Two more windows like this, and the squad will look good. I would rather be patient and get the right players in. If we can't, then I'd more happily take a chance on giving minutes to our excellent young prospects.
 
Imagine a time where wolves and Everton show more ambition than us.
 
Not as bad as last year, not good though. We've improved our defence a lot, but weakened in midfield and attack with the losses of Herrera and Lukaku. It's looking like we won't replace either. 5/10.

Zaha sold for some reason.

We've been fecking dithering ever since dithering Dave and Ed showed up. We've missed out on a shedload of rising stars when they were available and we had a free run at them.

We wait until they move to a bigger club and then pay over the odds.

AWB, Martial, Lindelof, De Gea types of signings should be our model. We should have lists prepared well in advance of transfer windows with the worlds best young talent aged 18-24 for every position and be ready to move whenever we need a player in a certain position. Sounds simple but I really don't know what our scouts and recruitment people are actually doing when they can't sign a single midfielder when it was surely the priority after getting a RB and CB.

Surely there's a CDM in the world that we can sign today to better us. Same with a number 10. When your scouting dept has the resources we have and your club has the finances we have there's no excuses for failure. feck Ed and feck the Glazers for how they manage the club.

Defence is ok now but there are big gaps all over the squad noticeably in midfield, RW and attack.

With Lukaku gone our net spend is relatively low again like last summer, we could be doing more.

I can’t believe we haven’t strengthened our CM and attacking positions. With Lukaku being sold, it is criminal that we are not bringing in a reinforcement. As it stands, we have Lingard/ Mason/ James/ Mata for the RW position and Mata/Lingard/ Perreira for the number 10 position (discounting Alexis because we never got the real Alexis). That is sub-standard starting attacking options for a team with Top 4 ambitions.

Diabolical. We had to invest in our midfield. That's what makes the difference in reaching top 4.

Right now Wolves have overtaken us, supposedly one of the richest clubs in the world.
And unless something happens in the next 21 hours a laughing stock. Theresa May is a better negotiator.

That's a bit detailed? :)

C if Lukaku is now going (and we have a sell on clause).

B if we get a Def mid or a RW. A if we did that and sold Darmian and Rojo.
 
Think some people expect too much at times, only thing missing is a top quality attacking midfielder, someone who can share the burden with Pogba. Shame Eriksen fell through.

Overall I’d rate this window as a 7, get someone like Fernandes and I’d give it an 8.

Wan Bissaka and Maguire and excellent buys, I’m not bothered about the transfer fees, they are both excellent defenders in positions we needed to improve. Our back 5 is up there with anyone this season I think.

Midfield needs work over the next couple of windows if we don’t bring in a late one. I think McTominay will be a big plus and I’d like to see more of Gomes I the 10 roll.

Attack, happy to sell Lukaku as he doesn’t fit the type of football Ole wants to play. We need Rashford & Martial to step up which I hope they will but willing to go with it this year to give them a proper chance. James has looked exciting in pre season as well. Will be an important squad player this year.

Biggest disappointment is not clearing out the deadwood but we can’t shift what others don’t want. We need to learn from this and make sure we don’t get into this position again.

What’s your point? We didn’t go in for him, so we didn’t get him. He went for £40m so wouldn’t have been much more for United

I can cope without investing up front but we have been screaming for creativity in central midfield for six years yet it is Spurs who already have some class that seem to be doing the business.

What we would give for Ndombele. And they want more.

This window itself, as there’s two first team additions, 5/10.

Considering we came 6th last season. This is embarrassing. We can’t compare with city and Liverpool’s lack of spending as they’re on top. We’re chasing.

The point is he wasn’t so incredible player we’ve missed out on as he was trying to make out.
 
Are you all ready for the Ole interview where he smiles and is very happy, says he got the players he wanted in key positions, that the young players will get a chance as is the Utd way and that the club tried to bring another but it wasn’t to be, no value etc etc yawn yawn

No, but he’d have been a great buy for us and we just ignored him at £40m. We’re now stuck with a very thin and lacking midfield.

I think you are moving goal posts, mate. What I said from the off is that we didn't replace Lukaku in terms of CF position. Not Lukaku as a player himself. Yes, obviously Ole doesn't fancy him and he wouldn't stay, but that also doesn't mean that we shouldn't replace him in the team as a striker.

My point was that, even though he didn't fancy him, he still used him a lot because he didn't have a replacement for that position. He doesn't have one either.

Greenwood would of course get games and minutes but we can't use him in Lukaku's place - playing 70-80% of the games as a starter.

Mata, Sanchez, etc they are not fighting for place in the same position, Alexis was tried and he didn't work. Mata is way off in terms of being used as a striker. We have Rashford, Martial, Sanchez, throw in James and Greenwood for 3 positions. Two of them haven't played at senior level. Even Messi was eased into that Barca team despite being an obvious talent. That's not enough you have to agree.
