Yeah I know what you mean, I think everyone needs to see this lad as a backup...or try to remember he is replacing Martial and Weg.

He would allow United to keep the idea open of getting Kane next season as well...which is a plus.

I get why you'd be cautious about the idea of him being able to translate from one league to the other, but in general terms it isn't so unlikely for a player to do so that we couldn't hope for it.

Looking at the other goalscorers who were topping the charts for npG per 90 last season and comparing the last season in another league versus their first in the PL...

Those who stepped up immediately:

Haaland - 0.75 to 0.94
Salah - 0.55 to 0.95.
Isak - 0.17 to 0.47
Firmino - 0.22 to 0.46
Awoniyi - 0.54 to 0.64
Rodrigo - 0.19 to 0.49
Jesus - 0.48 to 0.83

Those who didn't:

Alvarez - 1.02 to 0.49
Mitrovic - 0.57 to 0.30
Nunez - 1.00 to 0.48
Gakpo - 0.56 to 0.43

And given Alvarez and Nunez were returning over a goal a game previously, you might argue some drop off was inevitable in their cases regardless of the league.

Basically the strikers who are doing well at the moment having come from a foreign league tended to have hit the ground running when they first arrived. If you think Hojlund is talented enough to be a success here generally, it doesn't seem unreasonable to hope his current rate of returns might more or less survive the transfer from another league straight away.

hmm I do find those stats interesting, it seems to be around even although the sample size is not that big and some has gone into teams with an attacking setups that really gelled well already (Gakpo, Haaland). salah, firmino are the odd ones out, as this wasnt lately.

How about Scamacca, and other strikers who joined? Mitrovic should be higher than 0.43 no? 14 goals in 23.

I think those stats don't include penalties.

Come on man no need to be obtuse you’re really gonna come here and claim Rasmus is on the same level of potential as Bellingham and Tchouameni thats just daft

I never said he was. I just find it odd that you so confidently say that when it's more difficult to make your mark as a striker than it is for a midfielder to be a "huge talent".

Either way, the jury is out for all of these players and you can't say who's going to be the most successful. It could be Højlund even if he's not the most talented in terms of footballing abilities.

Aye, there are a lot of other players like Scammacca who aren't appearing on that list specifically because they didn't transfer across well and aren't scoring goals currently. So it's not that a lot of players don't fail to translate to the PL, many players don't and for all we know Hojlund could be one.

But if a goalscorer is ultimately going to thrive in the PL, it seems quite likely that they'll hit the ground running. Which makes sense really, as so many signings who don't end up getting discarded quite quickly.

Another example from our own team is someone like Martial. Even without ultimately being a massive success in the PL, his returns in his last season at Monaco were pretty much exactly the same as those in his first season here (0.40 vs 0.38). If Martial can do it, I don't think it's unreasonable to hope a Hojlund-profile signing could too.

Is it? or are our opinions just warped from players like Haaland and Mbappe and expect 21 year olds to be that immediately? I find it hard to believe players have just forgotten how to find the back of the net or have no scope for improvement.

Some reports yesterday of Greenwood to Atalanta. Presumably on loan.

If that's the case we are clearly doing it as a sweetener to get Hojlund.

Doesn’t half make me chuckle the attitude of some people in here. Is it so bad that we’re going after a raw talent that has awesome potential and solid attributes? We get slated every season for only scouting “ready made players”. Look at the players we’ve missed out on just because they weren’t “established” or “ready made”…Caicedo being the most recent.

What happens if a team like Brighton or Villa snap up Hojlund and turn him in to a monster, we go back in for him for 100m?
The difference is Caicedo cost Brighton 4m. The point of scouting unknown gems and developing them is so you don’t have to pay mental fees.

Realistically it's not really a crazy fee if we get him for something close to our valuation. It's mental in the sense football fees are mental even for relatively unproven players, but within the footballing landscape it's fairly ordinary contextually speaking.

It's a fee that represents the fact Atalanta were the ones that unearthed him from nowhere so they're getting massively rewarded for that, but it's not exactly top flight striker money either. Such a striker would be double or triple that.

I think it's all fairly mundane on that front, plus there's a scarcity of obvious striker options which may be playing into it. If we compare to someone like Ramos then you get someone from an arguably worse league with a better record, but he's slightly older and he'd probably cost nearly double. So unless you're going out there plucking someone from S.America or a real low quality league in Europe the fee isn't that special.

Based on what?! One is a proven Premier League footballer and goalscorer who would have an instant impact.... one is a young lad who's all potential.

Agreed. I think Toney would be a very good signing and a good fit for us with both Rashford and Antony. If Højlund don't kick on quick, I hope we go for Toney in January or agree to sign Kane on a free.

Toney doesn't have potential to be a top 4/champion's side striker. We would just lose money on an average striker. On the other half, Hojlund has potential to be a world class striker.

It was always going to be near impossible for us to get a top class striker this window, can’t say I’ve even watched a second of this lad but we need a body up front even if it’s another stop gap. We can’t rely on Martial and Rashford up top is borderline useless most times.

The striker market is so dead.. this guy seems pretty average to me.

How so?

I don't really see many other young strikers who are better with their back to the goal. He turns well, has quick feet and good control. His shot needs a lot of work, and he's going to miss absolute sitters, but overall he has a lot of very interesting qualities that not a lot of strikers seem to have these days.

Which makes it all the more maddening that we had Haaland and Alvarez within our crosshairs in a period spanning 12 to 18 months and just spurned the opportunity to get a long term younger striker in. This reinforces the need for a full sale and the complete eviction of the Glazer type of parasite off our club's backs. Our scouts get so much grief but to think they identified Enzo, Caicedo and Alvarez but didn't get any support from the higher ups - that's a potential PL and CL winning spine right there that we could have brought in for under 40m.

Toney is 27 and scored a total of 21 non-penalty goals in the Premier League. A goal every 279 minutes. Hojlund scored one every 204 minutes in Serie A last season.

I'm not sure that Hojlund is the answer but Toney is incredibly overrated on this site and I'm honestly not sure why.

Toney is "proven" but to a relatively ordinary level, with his returns for Brentford very much inflated by penalties.

His rate of goalscoring from open play in the league this season was about double what it was in the previous season, but still less than Hojlund managed in his first season in the Serie A. Given the 7 year age gap between the two, I'd definitely prefer to opt for Hojlund's much greater upside.

Toney is excellent in general play, mind.

You need to give him credit - the guy is one of the best penalty takers in the world with almost 94% conversion and 29 penalties scored.

Bruno, for comparison purposes, has just under 91% conversion, having scored 48 penalties (i.e. Toney is better in this regard).

He is playing for Brentford though - and he's the type of player that definitely passes the eye-test when you watch him. Physical, strong, good with his back to goal, decent link-up play and he can finish.

The jump of Toney to our main striker is a lot less then someone like Hojlund... but to be fair I don't even think he would be our main striker straight away if we bought him. Would probably be Rashford with him getting bedded in slowly.

This is the kind of signing that usually ends up working well for us. But I think we still need one more. We can't count on Martial, so if we can get another it'd be great.

Well I like him. He's big, fast, can drift out left or right, drop deep, hold up play, play others in, and he has a strikers instinct for getting into the box at the perfect time. Good in the air with his head, can shoot from outside the box or score taps ins, looks hungry and is gradually getting better and better. Even in the second half of last season, he was Denmark's star player for the national team.

Ten Hag will make him better. And the service he would get from Mount, Fernandes, Erikson or Sancho would be a level above anything he has had at Atlanta. We passed up the opportunity to sign Haaland when he was breaking through, let's not miss out on this one. He is the real deal. Get him signed.

And if Kane see's out his contract at Spurs, we can get him on a free next summer and have Kane and Hojlund as options.

It's Martial as backup and Rashford as the other backup. Helps having Garnacho and Sancho to use at LW if we need Rashford top so it's not a big deal.

If true this makes Hojlund purchase much more probable

It's good news of course, but man that guy really fecked us didn't he. Him being a twat essentially forced us to spend £82mil on a lesser prospect at RW and now the 50m on what is unlikely to be as good a prospect at CF. Such a shame. But will be good to put the chapter to a close .. assuming it's more than a loan.

Straight swap would of course be an ideal solution here

Only IF Bayern decide not to sign him now

What about Adam Hlozek? Young, big, technically decent, didn’t score that many goals but seems like can develop into a Kane sort, seems to have good awareness and is able to bring other attackers into play.

It's not similar at all as they're completely different players and profiles. Making the comparison besides "both are strikers" is beyond daft. And who would you prefer that you think is "ready"?

And yes Weghorst was, even go back to the cup final when many were praying for him to come on and score. There's never been a worse footballer at the club that had more good will.
Let that be an important lesson: attitude and workrate are valued higher than talent.

Every player we sign should have those attributes, because they are essential.
