Rasmus Højlund | Manchester United Player | Shirt Nr 11

Been pictured more in the past 2 days than last 2 years… give him a break ffs
I was gonna say, must be horrible for the lad and I hope the club are giving him support with regards to this. Can’t be nice having not even kicked a ball for us yet and he’s seeing fake media reports coming out saying he’s a crock and a waste of money etc. Then media briefs coming out saying it’s a small issue etc. leave the kid alone, absolute vultures

We've massively overpaid for an unproven teenager with a potentially dodgy back, brilliant.

Makes you wonder whose cock is bigger

Anyone that’s saying they’re not worried is lying to themselves.

Back injuries are absolutely horrendous, and to already have an issue at the age of 20 with your back is seriously worrying.

If he scores in line with his expected goals, and his expected goals never increase, then he'll spend his career returning at around the rate CFs like Mitrovic, Jesus, Isak, Nunez, etc. did last season. Which for the price we paid for him and the development he should have ahead of him, would be a big disappointment. We're looking for him to become an elite CF.

Which means he either has to become a ludicrously brilliant finisher who consistently overperforms his xG to an implausible degree, or his xG needs to increase from where it currently is. And the only two ways his xG can increase is with more shots or better shots. Given he's already 95th percentile for the quality of his shots, he's unlikely to see much if any growth there.

Thus, an increase in shot volume is the only plausible way his xG can go from it's okay levels now (0.47 per 90) to anywhere near the levels players like Kane (0.66), Osimhen (0.66), Salah (0.70) or Haaland (0.76) have hit at their best.

This is a simple question of how his numbers can translate to goals. Unless the volume of his shots increases to drive his xG up towards elite levels, or unless he becomes literally the best finisher of his generation, he won't be able to become that level a goalscorer. The maths just doesn't work.
Sorry mate, but you are lost in a sea of stats and need to find a way out.

Nunez cost more than Hojlund, Jesus and Isak near enough the same.

Sometimes a striker doesn't have to shoot every time to be a brilliant player, just being involved in the build up and taking defenders away from the ball is enough to make a good player.
Yet another reason why stats without context mean absolute nothing.

I would quite happily have Hojlund score ten goals this season if it meant the likes of Mount, Bruno and Rashford chip in 15/20 each because of the space Hojlund has created.

So no, for Hojlund to become an elite striker he doesn't have to increase his shot ratio, just become an elite player.

He works hard, has good pressing stats, is good in the air, can score with either foot, can score with his head, is good on the ball, is strong, can hold the ball up well and make good decisions. I'd say he's got all the attributes to become an elite striker, his shot ratio is near enough irrelevant to the equation.

It's infuriating, we badly needed a striker more than any other top club in Europe and this is what our clown show recruitment team comes up with. We should have just waited until Jan and signed Toney. Hell I would have taken Mitrovic.

More people should be angry, enough with the forced positivity about this joke signing.

I'm hoping these are sarcastic because my opinion on this forum having some of the most braindead posters of any forum i've ever visited on my history of time on internet is only being solidified more each day

This is the place with doctors, surgeons and medical super experts. Who needs our official medic dept/unit, right?

Clearly you are not a Matchday Thread regular.... these guys are almost Einsteins in comparison.

Nothing against you, but your English teacher needs to be fired. Find a new one, please.

If you're totally wrong and Hojlund becomes an excellent player for us, will you stop broadcasting your panic attacks here or just continue having meltdowns about every transfer anyways?

Poor mans Haaland.

Most strikers are to be fair.

So true.

The issue I have with Hojlund is that he is being hyped up so much and he has achieved very little. The price tag also does not help.
In years gone by, a striker with his pedigree would be loaned out to a lower division club and only after a year or two and if he does well would he even get a chance to sit on the bench and attempt to break into the team.
Just like Pelestri and Dialo, Hojlund is added to the list of prospects. And the odds of a prospect coming good are ridiculously small.

I'm still annoyed i remember how to spell Mkhitaryan

I remember him.
He arrived with much fan fair and it turned out that like every Dortmund player we have bought before/since, he was useless.
He now plays for Inter and his stats are terrible:

I mean, there was absolutely nothing wrong with what I said or how I said it. Maybe it wasn't the Queens English.

You're confused. Hojlund got 15 goals for club and country in 2023. He would in no age ever be loaned out to a smaller division. His smaller divisions was before he moved to Atalanta.

This is no different to many highly rated young player deals at that age. We believe he has massive potential, but is young still. Just like we thought when we spent 30m on Rooney 19 years ago.

Sorry, I had a splitting headache at the time and "on my history of time on internet" only amplified the pain.

I'd say its somewhere between the two of you. Not sure anyone in their right mind thinks he has Rooney-like potential. By 20 Rooney was already one of the best strikers in the world.

He has potential. Not enough to justify the fee we paid. The fee also takes into account what an excellent stylistic fit he is for our needs, the high price we were always going to be charged for a position we were so obviously desperate to fill, and the scarcity of really suitable options available.

What's most positive is that he's a square peg for a square hole, at a time when all the other pieces of our attack are in place and bedded in. If you say we paid £64m for Rasmus Hojlund, I'd call that an overspend. If you tell me we paid £64m to fit the crucial piece into an attack which may now fully unleash the potential of Rashford, Fernandes, Antony/Sancho and Mount (along with Garnacho, Amad, Pellistri), then maybe that's money well spent.

More a mistake in typing on my part than an error in how I normally say/speak/write English

Oh I agree. 30m 20 years ago is worth far more than what we paid for hojlund when you look at the inflation. I'm saying Hojlund has shown a high level in a big league and has progressed very quickly, so it's nonsense to claim he would be loaned out in lower times, let alone to a lower division. He's more akin to Lewandowski going to Dortmund, City grabbing Dzeko (though Dzeko had the elite year at Wolfsburg), Ibra going to Juve, etc.

It's an overspend sure, but like you say, it's to get the perfect type of player with huge potential who can be an actual elite striker. That's very rare. And that being rare makes the price jump. Atalanta paid 20m a year ago. Napoli paid Rennes 70m for Osimhen when he hadn't done much yet, at an older age than Hojlund now. Unless you are getting a punt on a south american, that's just how it goes buying a CF who has shown elite potential in a big league. Realistically this will be an adaptation year, but I don't think he'll need much more than that before he transitions into a key player.v

Massive gamble. Back injuries are always tricky. We should have asked for a reduced fee.
