Weghorst was miles better. Yes, as a goal threat he was useless, but he was actually a decent footballer in others areas, could hold the ball up, compete in the air, decent general technique, and was generally able to get involved in the game.

80% of Hojlunds games for Utd have been very similar to tonight, just anonymous.
 
It was just really sad watching him so afraid of taking shots - I think Amorim also should notice that this lad needs a break and sort of a restart, because he's playing well below his ability. Starting him is doing him more harm I think - and most importantly not helping the team
 
Sad to see his regression, right now he offers nothing. He wasn't this bad last season

This is depressingly accurate.

As you say, as crap as he was in front of goal, there were plenty of matches where I think Weghorst was somewhat of an asset. He could hold the ball up fairly well and generally knew how to be something of a nuisance for opposition defenders if not their keepers. I'd say Zirkzee is a more apt comparison to Weghorst - similarly a bit shite in front of goal but at least capable of being effective in other areas.

It's sad to say it but Hojlund is just not showing anything right now. I understand that you can't just shove Chido Obi in willy nilly as if done incorrectly it could wreck his confidence. With that said, though, right now he could come in and offer absolutely nothing and he'd still be on a par with Hojlund.
 
Yeah he doesn’t start against Fulham after that. Definitely a front three of Garnacho Bruno and Zirkzee.

I thought we had a gem, but either he’s got so used to training with our brainless defenders and keepers and thinks those performances mean something, or he’s just a bit shit.
 
Problem is when he doesn't play Amorim's formation will be blamed when the reality is we are impotent with or without him. The own goal needs to be replayed on repeat because it's the most symbolic 3 seconds of our strikers' scoring incompetence and how we have to find goals from unlikely sources
 
The opportunity he’s had to prove himself is incredible. There must be thousands of footballers more talented than him that will never sniff the Premier League yet this guy is one of the first names on the team sheet every week for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
 
He’s absolutely dreadful at the moment but I still expect him to start the next game. Just seems to do the wrong thing every time, it’s a tough job leading the line for us but he makes it even more difficult.

I don't remember Weghorst winning much in the air at all. It's a sad indictment on Hojlund that he's actually worse.
 
Really thought there was a player in there, he's crap
 
Why is he always on the ground. Even for our second goal, he was outside . Have never seen someone so big but way too weak to hold off the defenders. Still remember how he wrestled Gabriel and we were denied a PK. Where is that strength now ?

It's moments like this that our squad needed to come to his rescue, but we're always injured/loaning people out/just signing the wrong players.

We could live with a young striker coming off the bench and struggling if we had a proper replacement, but we really don't. Shocking as per.
 
He picked up O'Shea like a deck chair when he was on the ground holding his face. Funny how WWE it all looked with the wrestle comments last few months.

A quick FBREF trip shows Weghorst won 37.5% of aerials in the league for Utd. Not great but an upgrade on Hojlunds 22% this season.

23 passes attempted per 90 to Hojlunds 15
1.24 tackles per 90 to Hojlunds 0.21 and vastly out performs Hojlund in other defensive/pressing stats
1.57 shots to Hojlunds 1.13
3.03 shot creating actions to 1.63

Pitiful really.
 
Compare delap (how much did he cost?) vs hoijlund.
No comparison . Delap is strong can bring others into play and can control a ball. I’m not sure what hoijlund can do any more. Loses it every time he touches it (which isn’t that often)
Had such high hopes but it’s now getting to the point where it’s genuinely embarrassing.
When Yoro did that cryuff turn watch hoijlund’s lack of movement. That is the reason he’ll never make it. Never had the thought to make himself free. To be fair not many players do but for a no9 at United you definitely need that.
I’ll admit I was wrong about him, he’ll never be good enough. I still like the effort though!

Yeah. He's basically our only number 9 at the minute as the only other viable option has to play at number 10 because we only have 3 options to play in the 2 x 10s but one of them has to play in CM to avoid having to play someone that can't run in there. Utter mess
 
Damn he's a broken man at the moment. If we weren't so short on options I'd say he needs to be loaned out immediately to go build some confidence.

I hadn't thought about that. Our lack of depth in CM creates a big chain reaction.

I do feel like we should just trust Eriksen to play as a CM or 10 more. He still has loads of quality even if his legs aren't what they were.
 
If there was any alternatives, he'd be sitting things out for a while.

With Amads injury, Zirkzee will play in the 10. Not that I'm convinced he'd offer anymore in the 9 role than Rasmus is

Honestly, like with Zirkzee there's not much more to be said is there? Both are light-years away from what we aspire to at this club.
 
Time to con some club into thinking he’s a professional footballer worth tens of millions, any takers?
 
It's a sad affair. Has he a functioning attribute left? I had high hopes for him but he can't win a duel, a header, can't shoot, pass, run, close down......

A player that's bereft of confidence and probably knows he's out of his depth. How does a striker on a Sahara Desert of a dry spell let that ball run past him? He didn't want to shoot because he was afraid of missing. That's what happens when strikers have zero confidence.

And those stats are comparing him to Weghorst who was poor for us. Don't even want to see a comparison to a decent striker.
 
Pretty baffling how far this guy has regressed this season.

I think he needs to change style to play on defenders shoulders with runs in behind rather than his back to goal as some sort of link man. He clearly hasn't the skill or strength to hold defenders off and control a ball.

It's right up any half decent defenders alley to have him playing in this manner where they simply shepherd him back towards his own goal and apply some physicality to turn the ball over. Rinse and repeat every game.
 
His constant complaining about everything just draws attention to how awful he is.

He's not poor, he's absolutely awful and he doesn't know it.

I don't think he's better than a League 2 striker and I'm being honest, not rude. He's dreadful.
