Rashford | Villa | Loan with option to buy

He hasn't been striking the ball or playing like he did today for us for at least 18 months!

I honestly do not care how good he does at Villa, he could become prime Ronaldo, but his head went with us and it's time to move him on.
It's less than twelve months since he scored screamers vs City and Wolves in the PL or scored the equaliser vs Liverpool in the FA Cup which helped us win the thing.

He was below expectations in performances and effort since start of 23/24 (or even longer), nothing to argue with that. But when it comes to Rashford rational discussions were not possible for years within our fanbase and I'm sure it played a part "his head went with us" as you are saying.

Very bright performance again today. Absolut stunner of a freekick for the Watkins rebound.

Meanwhile we have Amad injured now and will be short of options.
Too bad he didn't have many bright performances in a united shirt since he got his big contract

Yes surely but I'm not sure we will find someone with that ability to strike a football as he did today soon.

I know I'm in the minority and will be ridiculed for saying so. But the decision to freeze him out and loan him (after an upturn of form at the beginning of Amorims Tenure notabene) is starting to look more what it is: idiotic.
He froze himself out, thats the whole point we are here

He wanted to leave. That’s really all we need to know

Even if he ballon d'or at villa, it was the right decision to let him go.

We destroyed him by giving him too much too soon,he began to behave as if he was bigger than the club

Funny watching him today. He was chasing things like a terrier and flying into tackles and beating defenders! Good performance. Hopefully he keeps it up and we can sell him.

He's just trying to make an impression. If he gets a goal or two in the next few games he'll be flying for a while. If he doesn't it'll probably fizzle out into the same empty performances he's been putting in for United.

Worth the gamble on Villa's part really.

I watched the game
One or two pieces of magic but he lost the ball a bit too it reminded me of many of his performances for Utd these last couple of years
I miss the days when magic was Best or Maradonna types doing actual magic, not some random generic footballer doing the basic nothing.

Go glad the Rashford magic is elsewhere

Or never wanted the responsibility of being a striker. Easier to play wide without the expectation yet still ignore striker waiting in the box but shoot yourself. Ultimately, proved to have the same shithouse character as Sancho. If I have any sympathy for these lads, it’s the constant online scrutiny they cop. Answer: stay the feck off it. Takes some discipline but you’re paid mighty well to be disciplined. Or go incognito.

I would go further to say he never truly embraced being the main man for utd, despite the getting the biggest paycheck. Was it Steve Maclaren who said Rashford reacted quite emotionally and agitated when Steve was trying to encourage him and said he will score the goals?

Didn’t he also turn down the opportunity to be captain under Ole?

Either way, I still blame the club for not recognising his struggles with pressure and rewarding him with the biggest contract in the squad.

Stop blaming the club. At some point he's an adult and should at least take more responsibility

We've all worked for a living since 18s or early twenties, at that age you should have know what is professionalism and what's dedication to your career and livelihood.

Let alone footballer, a short career where top athlete trains everyday just for a good 15 years career hopefully.

It's not too much to ask that you work diligently for a well paid job in your dream occupation

He didn't want to play for us anymore, so what can you do. Once again, think it was a very modern day Rashford performance, but its all getting viewed under some weirdly different microscope as it isn't for us.

Great post.

The club deserves blame, as do the players. Time and time again though we've seen players struggle to perform when in toxic atmospheres. It's not just a Man United thing, it's an all football thing. Loads of footballers just can't get going if they aren't happy. Whether it's down to personal work ethic, laziness, a mental thing and crumbling under pressure and expectations... There's loads of reasons and Rashford isn't a unique situation. He has needed a fresh start elsewhere for ages. If this fresh start gets him performing well, good for him. United need players who can handle the pressure here, but we are also not currently an environment where players can do well anyway so I find it hard to shit on players too much for not being able to do their best and struggling. Hell even some like Di Maria on one hand gets a lot of hate from United fans, but I see it like he just did a smart thing for himself and his life to jump ship as quickly as he could once he saw the disaster 1st hand. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to this when they can be appreciated more elsewhere, in a more organized and stable club, at a better footballing team, and with less pressure?

We all work, yes. But the quality of your work is not the same if you are happy with what you are doing and if you hate your life at work. It's not the same under a shit manager and a great manager who you get along with, and that's obviously going to be even more obvious in sport where you need a TON of personal motivation and confidence to go out and perform. It's not a case of just show up and play at your best because you are lucky to be a footballer.

He's just been replaced on 65 mins. Didn't take him long before its looking iffy. His backtracking is just non existent and when he does try and get back he's going through the motions. Tbh he looks like he can't be arsed.

Whether it’s him not being arsed or lazy, either way the root cause looks to me that he thinks he’s better than he is. We are well shot of him or any other player with that mentality.

Also, if he was united through and through you would think he would try harder to derail Liverpool’s title chances

I think him not rushing back was instructions as obviously Salah stays around the halfway line ready for counters rather than constantly tracking back to help out Robertson so risk and reward.

He's been alright so far but it's obvious this is just a convenient loan to get him properly in the shop window so not going to get too attached to him unless he wins us the FA Cup which would be historic.

That break in the first half for the disallowed goal when he broke quickly, played a lovely one-two and then hit in good cross was him at his best so want to see more of that in the coming weeks.

They’re just typical Rashford performances? There’s a tad more running and effort from him I think, but beyond that it’s what he basically did in our shirt for the last year or so. Nothing particularly revolutionary. It’s about what I expected, there was obviously going to be a bit of an improvement.

Villa fans seem happy tbf. "Breath of fresh air" according to one. Goes to show how widely perspectives can differ based on the same source material! Fair play, they seem broadly happy with his contribution so far

It’s always like this with new signings. Even here they’re viewed through with honeymoon phase spectacles. Obviously you could argue that some United fans see him with an opposite bias.

If he had ran back instead of jogged he could have definitely challenged that tying goal.

Manchester United fans not rating a player's performance whilst sitting in 15th place in Late February, whilst said player's performance lauded by fans of own team whilst still in the Champions League.

Edit: Whilst also having several attacking players better than ours in Morgan Rogers, Marco Asensio, Jacob Ramsay, and Ollie Watkins.

And your point is?

Yes like Zirkzee, and Anthony, and Sancho....

Presumably that we are letting our hatred / jealousy of Rash cloud our judgement of his performances.

Just interpreting his message - I didn't even watch the game.
Yeah, probably, and I really dont see the point. Should we get back Rashford or something.

The amount of bitterness in this thread is sad. Rashford is playing as well for Villa as I expected him to, providing them with an attacking threat, giving opposition defenders something to worry about out - although his end product is still below where it should be (it was just his first start though, against the best team in the country).

But it’s not just Rashford - a lot of our ex-players/loanees are currently performing better at their new clubs. That’s what can happen when you slot a decent player into a team which is already functioning well - they can add something new and make you even better. When you add a new player to a team that isn’t functioning well (ie us) it can have the opposite effect, merely compounding the chaos, even if they are a good player. This isn’t rocket science.

I don't think he was particularly amazing but he was motivated and working harder than he did for United. Was probably 7/10 overall.
