Raphael Varane to leave United

Another one leaving on a free. Not sure how we are able to sustain this business model, the amount of players we've signed for huge money and flogged for much less or just released is absurd.

His future here was rumored to be very much linked to Ten Hag's future. I agree with that, but I imagine we'd have liked to have kept him over Maguire, Lindelof and Evans.

Not sure about that.

The talk months ago was that his contract was not being renewed. I never heard anything different. The man can't stay fit enough for the demands of the PL.

Still a great player when fit, unfortunately that's really quite rare nowadays.

Good decision by the club, frees up a huge wage, hopefully Varane finds a nice payday in the MLS or Saudi league before he retires.

I would have liked to keep Varane on a pay as you play or very reduced 12 month contract as when fit he’s our best centre back, question now is which one of Maguire or Lindelof follows him as we’ll 100% be getting a right sided centre back in as first choice and it’s been long reported two centre backs will go thus summer.

One of the few likable players in the squad and still our best center back when fit, but financially it just didn’t make sense.

Hopefully it doesn’t mean that we keep the likes of Maguire & Lindelöf and it’s just the first step of the major rebuild.

A world class player signed too late. A joy to watch at his best

Probably put in 10--12 world class performances whilst with us in 3 seasons. Terrible signing when taking everything into consideration. Clearly a top player with his trophy cabinet but we rarely ever saw his qualities, injuries or otherwise. That wage bill looks healthier now though.

He's pretty much won it all for Framce and Madrid. Wish him all the best and hope he enjoys a nice bumper retirement contract somewhere else.

Yup. I have a bad feeling that this will come back and bite us on the arse.

Rumoured? By who, pray tell?

The right decision for all involved.

Not sure where he will go next, he is older than his years football wise, so it feels he is a lot closer to retirement than most 31 year olds.

Shame it never worked out, he was very likeable and had high hopes. That introduction before the Leeds game was epic!

Hope this is the start of a mass exodus.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Dortmund. Clubs we should never look to buy from again.
Based on our track record over the last decade, we shouldn't buy players from any club ever again. Maybe with the exception of Sporting.

Great defender, we never really saw enough of him with the injuries though. Wish him well for the future.

His contract was announced as a 4-year contract by the club when he signed in 2021. Suddenly earlier this season everyone started talking about it actually being a 3+1 contract. Weird.

His departure dangerously steering the club into returning of Maguire - Lindelof combo.

Despite injuries, sad to see him go. One of the last world class in this sinking football club.

Sad in many ways to see him go. But the correct decision to let him go. Seemed like a very genuine humble guy. Good luck to him wherever he ends up next.

Thought he was the best CB in Europe for the last decade before we signed him and always wanted him at Utd from even before he joined Real. Might be the most disappointing transfer ever for me tbh.

Personally think it may have been better to keep him as cover for one more season considering we had the extension option. Yes he’s not the same player and yes he has his injury problems but he’s still been our best defender this season and played most of the games in the first half of the season. His wages are significant but I’m sure we could have afforded it for one more season. Anyway all the best Rafa, a legend of the game and a top player overall.

Quality players will take note we are not the club to come to.

I’m pretty sure Maguire will stay now after a decent season. Lindelof should be shipped off and a couple of new CBs brought in.

Shame as he's one of the few I didn't really have a problem with, but unfortunately his body is no longer holding up

Evans will likely leave as well, so the chances of letting a 3rd CB go in the same window are small in my opinion. Especially when we're likely to need so many players elsewhere. Like a whole new midfield with Amrabat's loan ending and Case/Eriksen needing urgent replacement. Or a striker, because with Martial leaving our only striker for next season is currently Hojlund.

Very much expected especially after he revealed he's been struggling with concussions. A good move for us as long as his replacement is decent

There was something that day that felt, this is possibly the wrong word and I'm going to receive nothing but criticism, small time.
I was just getting flashbacks of Shephards Newcastle. The euphoria felt abit uncomfortable. Then we witnessed that little exchange between Rio and Varane , I think Rio said something along the lines of " Just win" . Oh God ,the cringe.

SAF would've just signed him and that's that.
We had all just returned from having to watch games behind closed doors for 18 months, so I totally understand why they did it, as we were starved of anything positive for so long. And it worked to be fair. The atmosphere went up a notch before kickoff.

Yup. We’re in an endless state of rebuilding.

Varane is more importantly a solid, kind human being. Its been wonderful having him here. His introduction at Old Trafford was absolutely electric, a wonderful day.

Wishing him all the best for the future

Shame that his body can hold up much.

When will SHaw follow up, if ever?

Always wished we had signed him all those years ago from Lens. A proper world class centre back in his day.

As for us, we're back to square one again. I had assumed we bought him (and Casemiro) to plug a gap whilst we searched for a long term option. Instead we've not lifted a finger and will be needing to spend big for a top class starting centre back this summer.
