Raphael Varane to leave United

You can't go into a gruelling campaign with one of your best centres backs missing 20 odd games. You just can't.
Financially it doesn't look great either if he's actually on the reported 300k+ a week contract.

£300K per week off the books to sign a younger CB. It’s a win for the club even though I’m sad it didn’t work out for Varane.

I don't like this news at all unless the decision is coming from Varane himself.

From club's front, this is only a good decision if we're also planning to sell Maguire & Lindelöf, don't sign Evans on another year deal etc. and completely revamp our CB positions bar Martinez otherwise we'll stay being a laughing stock with them in the squad.

You don't release your best CB who just turned 31 & actually has the quality to be world class which is a rarity in CBs these days and keep the joke/not good enough players like Maguire, Lindelöf just for the sake of rebuilding and cost cutting. We could've easily kept Varane imo.

I get that we're going to a different direction but still you need some quality & experience in your squad even if you're planning to rebuild. Both Casemiro & Varane are far from finished and would've been very useful in the right set up. He also retired from national football last year so I'd expect his injury record to get better as well.

If you need to cut the cost of the squad, then sell players who have nothing to give and have no value to us on the pitch. Knowing us, we'll regret this decision next year and miss him just like Fred.

The drama.

Great player on his day, but this is a sensible decision by the club.

We need to focus on younger signings who have a higher chance of being more robust (and then do a RM and bin them off to some other schmuck if we get a whiff of injuries creeping in).

I remember after we had just announced his signing a few minutes before the Leeds game, he was brought out of the tunnel in his suit, holding a United shirt. We were all absolutely buzzing. Shame he didn't live up to expectations. Last season's partnership with Martinez was the only highlight in an injury ravaged 3 years.

Still our best defender when fit, sadly that's not often enough. Would be nice to see him return to Lens for a couple of years rather than head to Saudi Arabia.

Great player when fit, but you can't have your first choice centre back only being fit for half a season.

I like him but he's getting old and has hardly been a bastion of good health during his tenure. A departure to a lesser league is best for Raph, and also the club who will hopefully invest in a new CB. Arabia beckons.

Hardly, he's 31.

In a day and age when players like Ramos, Pepe and Silva are showing how despite being much, much older, they can still hang with the young ones, I think this is a bad move.

Varane is the best cb at the club no question.

You cant miss someone who is hardly playing. When we concede next season you could miss Varane but if Varane was still under contract, there would have been a big chance he wouldnt have been playing because of fitness issues.

I think it is the right decision. If he was willing to stay on much reduced wages then i would keep him but that isnt a realistic situation.

It doesn't matter how good he is when he misses half the season every season.

He's averaged 20 starts in the PL in his 3 years here. That's nowhere near good enough, especially when he's on monster wages.

Used to amuse me (in a bad way) how someone would say "Varane starting" and you could reliably quip, "I wonder who will come on for him at half time?" and be correct 90% of the time

His time here was vastly overrated and he had many poor performances that went ignored. Always injured and hardly ever available. Wish him the best in his career, but it's been a total waste of time.

There was something that day that felt, this is possibly the wrong word and I'm going to receive nothing but criticism, small time.
I was just getting flashbacks of Shephards Newcastle. The euphoria felt abit uncomfortable. Then we witnessed that little exchange between Rio and Varane , I think Rio said something along the lines of " Just win" . Oh God ,the cringe.

SAF would've just signed him and that's that.

One of my all time favorite defenders. Such a shame he was injured most of the time at united. Right move from all invloved but still a bit sad. He was a monster of a defender.

It's a shame how it ended. On paper he should've been our best CB of the past 10-12 years, but in the grand scheme of things with injuries, silverware etc. I think he ends up on a similar level as Smalling and Blind peaked here.

He only turned 31 a few weeks ago. That surprised me.

Where's he gonna end up? Far too young for the Saudi retirement league, right?
He has been vocal multiple times over the last season or so about fixture congestion, and also recently mentioned about how all the rattling his brain has felt from heading the ball his career.

Retirement league is almost certainly where he'll go now.

I think people might be overeating Madrid's genius

Maybe I'm wrong and Pérez and his cronies all did an evil laugh in their Dr evil style "lair" when the deal was concluded

Unsurprising that it's happening but weird timing of the announcement. I guess maybe his next move is getting announced soon and we wanted to do our announcement first?

Also retired from international duty.

I agree, I think he'll go to some retirement league.

Like Cavani a class player but didn't seem that interested in playing for us.

Would have rather kept as an experienced option but hard to justify his wages when he's barely ever available. He's played barely more than Jonny Evans in the PL this season.

It will not be a great loss because of his injury-proneness and his advancing age. He was a great player, but his best days were with Madrid.

Probably our best CB, but this was expected.

In theory. In practice always injured and a ticking time bomb when fit. Real Madrid have pulled our pants down now for Di Maria, Casemiro and Varane. We essentially paid for their upgrades at every turn - they signed Bale and Rodriguez the two transfer windows around us getting Di Maria, they signed Camavinga, Thcoumeni and Bellingham over the last few as we gave them about 100 million for Varane and Casemiro.

They dont even need the Saudi league for their net spend they just use us.

In a team who dominantes possession he could probably still do a good job; bit at current Uniteds chaotic style it's physically to demanding. He did show some passion coming over to fans at the end of some games which was nice to see.

Quite gutted by this news. Was a fantasy signing for me for many years, so I still now get a little excited when I see his name on the team sheet. A Rolls Royce of a player

Just didn't have the fitness, which is a shame as at least he was (is still) quality when healthy and had a great attitude.

A shame, as he is a Man Utd type player.

Out of nowhere ? It has been speculated for months that he might leave on a free.

Real Madrid getting 100m for him and Casemiro is wonderful business for them. One of them turned out to be a crock and the other is finished after just 1 season. Here we are after just couple of seasons looking for their replacements. Such terrible business by us.

At least we seem to be on the right track by letting him go instead of extending his contract to "protect" value. One down, few more to go. Martial and Eriksen should be next on those that needs to leave on a free.

Madrid adapted to the climate, Utd didn't. Hopefully that changes.

Class act but injured too much, we need a top class ~23 year old that is never really injured.

City got Gvardiol and we have Evans its telling. Time to get players who aren't on the injury table half the season, and having to chop and change a line up.

Great CB when fit, but he simply hasn't been and as one of our top earners it'd be financially idiotic to keep him on.

The ghost, the wraith, the phantom. Really liked him as player and he seemed a good person. That being said, I agree, he had to go.
Every 250k a week player on our books, should be blue chip players. Constant, high level performer with good character and excellent durability. He's just not that.
