Raphael Varane to leave United

Does anyone know what the longest streak of games he had for Utd was?

I'd be amazed if he played 5 games in a row without being injured or needing to be rested to make sure he didn't get injured.

We've made a lot of obviously idiotic transfers over the years but this was mostly just unfortunate. I think he was a good choice on paper and we were just unlucky how things panned out with injuries.

Still, its for the best that he leaves. Huge wages, clearly not part of any long term plan and too injury prone to be a useful stopgap.

Another great player who we bought past their prime, we should have signed him instead of Smalling in 2010.

Please no more signings over the age of 28 unless they have a flawless fitness record.

Shame, one of the greatest defenders in the modern era but it’s the correct decision, seems to genuinely love the club and wish him all the best wherever he ends up

Comfortably our best CB in post Fergie era. Shame that we signed him when we were shit. If only we would have signed him in 2011.

It makes sense for him to leave though. We won't compete for the title in the next 2 seasons, and he is having injuries and is in a very high salary. We really need a full revamp, so ideally should only keep young players who will still be good when we (hopefully) start challenging in 2-3 seasons.

I wouldn’t compare him to Casemiro - Case was obviously past his peak, Varane was coming here in the prime age for a defender and without big injury history. It’s quite unfortunate he couldn’t stay healthy more and overall his stint here will be a bit of a disappointment, he was truly a world class player when we got him and I was proud we were able to convince him to join us. Overall he’s still the best CB we’ve had on our books in a decade or so, wishing him all the best. He should’ve came here right after Lens, such a class player

The 2021 transfer window really summed up United's and the Glazers transfer policy of big names and marketable individuals. All flash but no substance.
Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo all ,in retrospect , big name disaster signings.

Casemiro was our player of the year for 75% of last season, up until his bullshit red cards and then injury disrupted his rhythm

To be fair we tried to sign him around then didn't we? He wanted to go to Real, not much we could do about that.

Brilliant defender. Too bad he became so injury prone, and being at this club certainly didn't help that. All the best to him!

Only United could sign a 28 year old world class CB off the back of 3 largely injury free seasons at Real, and then watch him turn to mush.

A CB should be in their prime from around 27-32. He should have been our van Dijk.
Sports scientists can predict when the injuries will start to become a problem, to a tee.

Madrid were happy to let him go after 3 injury free seasons because they knew he was about to breakdown.

It's damning of uniteds medical team because they should have been able to spot it, or at least identify how many good seasons we'd get out of him. A level or two below unfortunately.

This one is a shame, I was hoping they'd work something out as its not cheap to replace him either and he's a good one for the dressing room.

He's still arguably out best defenders, 2nd best at worst. That Martinez and Varane combination is the best by far. It's hard to argue against wanting him to pay the money he's one with all of his availability issues.

I guess I will have seen 1 of his 2 goals for United live (winner at Wolves at the start of the season) so that's something.

I'd say easily our worst window in hindsight which was probably thought of as our best at the time.
Similarly the summer window that was seen as terrible, Dalot, Fred, Grant, was actually fine.

Very unfortunate. Great defender but it’s time for a rebuild and as Mr Rangnick stated. Players who are onto their second contract. Todibo, Tapsoba or Silva please.

Not yet. If Arda Guler'e career trajectory is any where close to like Odegaards where he just doesn't get game time there, I'll gladly take him at United.

Or Rodrygo if Mbappe and Endrick will take all his minutes.

Stay away from the older ones though....

Didn't played well enough this season for us.

Good decision by the club to not award him another contract knowing his issues.

Think he may sign for Paris too

That transferwindow was going to be the window we needed to make the step towards a serious title challenge.... didnt turn out the be :wenger:

1. We tried but he chose Real.
2. He had a near flawless fitness record when we bought him.

It's highly unfortunate how it worked out.

We could've had a decent season to be fair if we didn't neglect the midfield yet again in the transfer window.
We had a good defence, a impressive attack but the midfield base was clearly lacking in defensive solidarity. Fred and old man Matic was never going to be enough compliment Pogba and Bruno creative tendency's.

Yeah Zidane convinced him to join Madrid according to Fergie.

“I hurtled down on the train from Euston to Lille to sign the young French defender Raphael Varane,” Ferguson wrote in his 2015 book Leading.

“David Gill was getting into the finer points of the contract with Lens when Zinedine Zidane got wind of this and somehow scooped him up for Real Madrid from under our noses.”

Class player and class person. Inevitable really, unless he'd have agreed a much lower wage with performance related bonuses.

Lindelof and Maguire to go.

That would have been the moment to sign Casemiro or a Casemiro type player. Although that season was the season that Pogba fully broke down and turned into the injury prone mess he was until he got his drugs ban.

I don't like this news at all unless the decision is coming from Varane himself.

From club's front, this is only a good decision if we're also planning to sell Maguire & Lindelöf, don't sign Evans on another year deal etc. and completely revamp our CB positions bar Martinez otherwise we'll stay being a laughing stock with them in the squad.

You don't release your best CB who just turned 31 & actually has the quality to be world class which is a rarity in CBs these days and keep the joke/not good enough players like Maguire, Lindelöf just for the sake of rebuilding and cost cutting. We could've easily kept Varane imo.

I get that we're going to a different direction but still you need some quality & experience in your squad even if you're planning to rebuild. Both Casemiro & Varane are far from finished and would've been very useful in the right set up. He also retired from national football last year so I'd expect his injury record to get better as well.

If you need to cut the cost of the squad, then sell players who have nothing to give and have no value to us on the pitch. Knowing us, we'll regret this decision next year and miss him just like Fred.

You can't go into a gruelling campaign with one of your best centres backs missing 20 odd games. You just can't.
Financially it doesn't look great either if he's actually on the reported 300k+ a week contract.

The club is incapable of load managing a player with his injury history. Our sport science department needs culling and rebuilding as much as OT.
