Ralf Rangnick's consultancy role has been scrapped

Well be prepared for him to walk in the near future then.
I don't think Ten Hag is a man to walk, but I fear that the feckign Glazers would still underinvest, sack him, get the new shiny manager and repeat this fiasco once again. Ten Hag needs to be backed and given enough time.

He was saying the players were not good enough way before he "failed". And btw, he was asking for transfers in January but didn't get any. I wouldn't blame him so much for failing. You give this dross to Pep Guardiola and I'd doubt he'd do all that better. Maybe get us a top 4, but that's about it.

He was saying the players were not good enough as soon as points started dropping. It doesn’t take a genius to shift the blame away from yourself.

Shifting the blame or not, was he wrong?

Impressive ability to argue with the plain obvious.

He failed as manager and said we needed a new team. That was some sharp intellect right there.

Yes, he did. His biggest failures were trusting players who did not perform even if he could only replace them with youth or dross, and he failed in acquiring coaches who were up to scratch. But his assessment of the club and the team in particular was spot on. And we see that still.

Took RR 3 matches to see through these losers. Let see if ETH can match that.

He does. My opinion on Ten Hag is I don't know how we've even landed him in the first place. He's too good for us with the Glazers. I just can't see him accepting our circus for very long.

I don't expect him to be backed, we're currently having 8m bids rejected for Arnautovic who's not going to fix anything, we can forget about players like Sesko. So he won't be able to play his way, he'll be reduced to playing counters here, and I don't expect someone like him would put up with that.

Some of you really need to move on. It was Ten Hag who didn't want anything to do with him, and made no effort to actually meet him in person.

It never would have worked if he stayed, as ETH is his own man. So pick one, Ralf or ETH.

Did he really trust threm? As far as I remember, he wanted a new midfield in January. One of the RB players in particular I remember being talked about. Club didn't want to back him because he was short term. I guess he could have just said "feck it, I'll just play the kids", but would the Glazers even allow him to do that? I don't know. This club is fecked. We seriously need new owners. Like immediately. I don't care if they are from Tajikistan or something, anything but the Glazers.
We need players yes, it doesn’t make him any more insightful though.
Made him insightful enough, considering many people here said that the players were fine and he was exaggerating, that he was not good enough, etc.

No it didn’t.

Many people said he was a poor manager who shouldn’t be publicly criticising the players at every opportunity. Both of which were true.

He was 100% right. The club needed to move on half the squad and start again. It should not take 5 years to get a squad assembled. So many players in the squad are on their 4/5th chance already.

Rashford has lost it. Shaw has been poor for over 12 months. De Gea can’t play out from the back. McFred cannot do anything positive in midfield.

We aren’t rock bottom yet. Such a shame we end up getting a world class manager but he hasn’t been given the money to create his squad.

RR was a poor coach for us because he didn’t have the energy for day-to-day hands-on coaching. But he knew early on that there were not enough good players. His mistake was stating in public that players were shit then persisting with them. I say his mistake but I always suspected there was interference from above.

He didn’t seem to care we were losing so why not drop most of these guys and get the kids in? I think it was commercial pressure from above.

This. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again - he was a bang-average/sub-par manager but he was given an impossible task. This squad is dross and it’s going to take Erik a few months to try and change it into a consistent-winning team.

Erik shouldn’t have started McFred. I was hoping he would play Eriksen in the deeper role next to one of them. Can’t believe the last 3 managers haven’t identified they are a core problem for us.

I think we are. We're slowly going backwards and backwards and I can't see a way out of this malaise. ETH will be sacked in 2 years and the cycle will continue.

He might be poor short term manager, but he is dead right when he said we need a complete overhaul.

Maybe club still keeps RR's list of potential signings...Somewhere in the trash bin.
It must be useful now.

So following your logic, is ETH going to tell Bryan Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson to stay out of things?

Be interesting to see if he does…

What's the point in bumping this every game?

We know he had a point that many of the players aren't good enough. What exactly is the genius in that? Every armchair critic has the insight to see that we have 3-4 (efficient) transfers windows worth of work to do to get this squad looking like a top football team worthy of the shirt. That's about 10 transfers anyway!

Rangnicks strength was always a desk job and we sacked him when he moved to a desk job from the dugout.

Isn't it so typical of this club to feck everything? I mean RR is known to build clubs and get the right people to coach and the right players. We get him as a coach and then we needed his expertise we sack him and put someone who has no experience in that position which we need him most. Mind boggling.

Rangnick wasn’t the man as a coach, but he was right on what broader strategy was needed. Murtough obviously felt threatened by it so he got rid. An obvious sign of someone out of his depth. I remember reading one of Whitwell’s puff pieces on Murtough and the person most bigging him up as top class was Chris Coleman.

Laimer, Kamara, Neves, Ruiz all getable players, I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them were in Rangnicks plans. He talked about our need to control games in midfield, he would have addressed it.

anyone of this would be better than McFred.

Someone elsewhere suggested that Ralf's ability to scout players was negated by ETH wanting a different profile to what Ralf looks for. I suspect that's a bit silly considering the quality of players that Ralf has brought through, that I expect could play possession style better than our crop.

I guess we'll never know, but he did a better job building up Red Bull than anyone has done for United yet since SAF.

He saw the problems, openly stated how many players are needed and got binned. After that we proceeded to get three players, one of them for free, in positions not needed. Well done.

This is the problem, and it is understandable that Murtough would want him gone. He is a way much better DOF than Murtough. It is typical of this club. Gave Ole a permanent contract when he should not have been given one and then appoint a DFO who has never been in that position. What a shambles.

Yes. Murtough, used to working in the background at the FA, Everton, Coventry and Fulham at a slow tempo and with very little achievement, would have shat himself at the thought of trading 5-6 players out and at least that in. He is in his 50’s and hasn’t actually got any significant experience in recruitment. His CV is very mediocre indeed. A very similar appointment to OGS.

We're still early on, but I do think we should have kept him on as DoF.

This bloke could see the mess we were in and wasn't afraid to speak up about it. Shame he was ignored and kicked out the club. But not at all surprising.

The fact the squad he inherited played so badly under him should have no bearing on his opinions of what was needed to improve that squad. Which was one of the main reasons he was hired, surely?! We’ve no idea how good he is at squad building because he wasn’t fecking allowed to sign anyone, or even get the ball rolling on signing players for his successor.

The whole thing was an utter fiasco. Torpedoed our top four chances and stalled the rebuild by 6 months.

End it would be at odds with the type of players ETH wants so what would be the point?

Devils advocate: How do we know it'd be at odds?

Rangnick may not be a brilliant coach but I reckon he understands Erik Ten Hag's tactics and approach. I doubt he'd have advocated signing anyone who doesn't fit that Ajax style and philosophy.

It's pretty much irrelevant now. He was kicked out of the club. Plus, the briefing since has been clear nobody at United is shedding tears about it.

I just feel it was a missed opportunity. Whether you think Rangnick is a crap coach or not, he's a great Director of Football. Why not tap into that if you can? Is it worse to be chasing Julian Alvarez than Marko Arnautovic?

He also had a plan to get rid of Ronaldo as early as January which would have avoided the whole fiasco of the summer and wanted 2 new attackers to fit a modern style but was vetoed by the board.
The visionary we needed but didn't deserve?

One of the best football brains in the game and we treated him like shit. This club deserves everything it gets. He would have been the revolutionary we needed to weed out the dead wood.
